Sorry to bump this thread...

But all these apps mentioned, is there a range (distance) that they will
only work in?

In other words, can I stream from my home computer to my iPad
on vacation? On a flight?

Once you set it up and use their remote feature anywhere you have an internet connection you can stream using this app.

My iPad is wifi only so i am dependent on finding a wifi hot spot, so that is a limitation for me. If i was going on a long road trip or a plane ride i would still want a few videos on my Ipad it's self.

As far as you want it too as long as you have either a wi-fi or 3G connection at the other end. I have streamed stuff from my home Mac to my iPad while 60 miles away in a car traveling down a highway. NICE!

I asked this in other thread a while back but now I can't find that thread.

I was on a flight home and a passenger in front of me was watching some movies on his iPad. What I'm not sure is if the movies were on his actual iPad or if was some how streaming from his home PC.

So if I understand your post correctly, on my iPad 3G, I should be able to stream from my iMac to Ipad regardless of where I am?
Is that correct or did I not understand you?

Thanks

This question is a little off topic but still related to Air Video...

What router are you guys using to stream from your mac to your iPad?

I'm thinking of getting the Apple Airport Extreme but I really just need one that allows me to connect more than one device at a time. My current Belkin one is so old it only allows one connection at a time
I needed to replace my crappy free Sky router. Thought about the Airport Extreme but ended up spending a little more and got the same router I have at work because I was so impressed with it (Draytek Vigor 2820Vn). My favourite feature is VPN which allows you to connect securely to your network over the internet as if you were actually on the LAN.

You're kidding right? You stream over a wi-fi network. How far does your wi-fi stream?

Some of the video/audio streaming apps can stream outside of your local WiFi network. For instance, part of Air Video's main app description says that you'll be able to access your files anywhere you have an Internet connection - including streaming your videos over 3G - if you have a a router that can handle it and the patience/expertise needed to get it working via the router.

But plenty of stuff can of course interfere with performance - your router and Internet speeds at home, the speed/power of your computer and the video-conversion/server software, the strength of the Internet connection you're using externally, etc. Hypothetically you could play files from your home computer onto your iPhone or iPad while you're on the other side of the world, although the farther you go the farther the data has to travel so it'd naturally drag more than if you were nearby.

Regardless, with software-based solutions like this you just can't expect to stream externally as fast and reliably as using a local network or an expensive high-end NAS media server.

There are some other threads here that discuss troubleshooting the use of the Air Video app and software to deliver video over 3G: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/937696/

I think they call it ZumoDrive now. I think it's like Dropbox where you have a link on you home machine and the web. You get 2GB free but can buy more and you will need more if you use it for video.

Try StreamToMe as well. I've used both. I prefer StreamToMe but AirVideo is very good as well. They cost the same (around $3-$4) so you really can't go wrong.

Great suggestions, I do have a related question to streaming. Even though I have the wake for network activity box checked on power settings on my iMac, it never wakes up to stream. From my limited searches on the topic, it seems a "special" packet is required to wake it up. Any suggestions on this?

AirVideo is the best $3 I've ever spent, bar none. Easy to set up and use. Couldn't ask for more for its functionality.

Using AirVideo, I stream videos and podcasts from my Mac to my iPhone over 3G all the time while I walk the dog :) And I stream videos to my iPad the same way anywhere as long as there's Wifi. Provided you leave your computer on.

I love Air Video. I have the conversion set to replicate the source resolution, and the quality slider set to 80%.
I convert all of my videos that aren't DVD rips(I use Handbrake for that task).
It streams video flawlessly, where when trying to stream the very same files, via iTunes Home Sharing, stream quality is inconsistent.

Edit: Typical. I updated my iPad just shortly after postimg this, and whaddya know? Home Sharing now works a treat!

Decided to give Zumo a whirl but didn't care for it.
Not that it was bad, but more that you only get 1gb free and if you need more, there is a monthly fee.

Is Air Video the same way?
Is there a monthly fee for the GB you need or is there unlimited amount?

Thanks

Airvideo has no limit. Why don't you try the lite version?

No. Zumodrive is a separate product that existed even before Zumocast was pulled. They are not the same. Hopefully Zumocast comes back someday as it's a great app. Glad I got it before it was pulled.

Air video offline conversion...

The cool thing is after you have your video directory on air video you can do offline conversion then next time you hookup to iTunes, drop them onto your iPad.

Wouldn't one of the "remote desktop" apps, like Logmein or Splashtop do the same with no limitations to what you have access to?

I use splash top right now and watch hulu nicely, hardly any lag and that's not even a local media file.

Wouldn't the speed of streaming almost be the same as using something like air video?

Just asking, I have no clue

I use Air Video for movies and Audiogalaxy for music. I gave up on Zumocast last year when comparing...seem to remember the quality not being as good for movies, and audio gave me trouble somehow.

How much of a drain on system resources does air video use on a pc/mac? I have a mac mini in my home theater, it runs Boxee for the front end, and runs a file/torrent server on the back end.

I'm just curious, because i don't want streaming a video to my iPad to make video choppy when watching in boxee on the tv if both were being done @ the same time
