I haven't noticed a drain really with Air Video, but then again I have not tried to run two video streams to two devices at the same time like that. Air Video is a really good app if all you need to do is watch video. The quality is good. It's easy to use.

There's a free version to try, so why don't you try it out and give it a shot. See how it works with your boxee setup. And then let us all know! :)

In the process of moving, but i'll give it a shot this weekend. Worse comes to worse, I will try moving to Plex from Boxee ... but I reallllly would rather not.

It depends on what is being transcoded. 480P material, not much. 720P and especially 1080P stuff, yes, there is going to be some high CPU drain as it transcodes that. Best to run on a dedicated machine if you are going to be using it very often, or a VERY powerful machine with many cores otherwise.

Is real time transcribed flash video possible???

I am waiting for a way to watch real time flash video via AppleTV2. Does anyone know if Air Video or StreamToMe or Plex or anything else out there can be tweaked or has plan to do so in the future?

I actually use both (AirVideo and StreamToMe). AirVideo mainly because I can queue up files to be transcoded ahead of time, as the machine I'm serving off is pretty weak (single core AMD). Also, STM does audio, as some one pointed out. Nice for when Home Sharing just doesn't work or I'm on the road. I like the STM server (AirVideo requires Java and the server seems bloated).

I've also found AirVideo handles some files STM does not at times. Strange, but I've had it happen. They're both cheap (around $3) so I figured I'll just use both.

Maybe I'm the idiot, but I must be the very last to air play and video playing.

Based on things I'm hearing in this thread, I d/l'd video play lite. I don't get it. What server PIN or addy is it asking me for?

Air Video Won't work over 3g

I can't seem to get the Air Video Server to work on my Macbook Pro so I can stream to my iPhone on 3g. I get this error:

Connection Test Failed

Your Air Video Server instance is NOT accessible from internet.

I've confirgured the port manually and I contacted support and they don't know why it's not working at the moment.

If it did I would so buy this app if the 3g worked!

For those of you who wants to use AirVideo over 3G or from another Wifi network,

Go to AirVideo Server's preferences, go to the Remote tab and select "Enable Access from Internet". It will display the server pin as well as a port number. You then need to Forward this port number to your computer.

Click on "Test Connection" to test if your port has been forwarded properly.

I finally got air video to work for me over 3G. Reset my router and now it works.

So if I have my iPad on a wifi network thats not on the same network as my Mac then I can still connect and stream video?

Plex

Let me add my vote for Plex. I started using Boxee on my computer to manage and watch my media, then used Zumocast because it could be streamed to my iPod (and my wife's iPad, which we didn't have, yet). I found it created a few problems and then found Plex and immediately became a convert. It not only manages it, it downloads information for each television episode, so you know exactly which one is which. And it all streams nicely to the iPad.

I have both a zumocast and plex server on my mac for my ipad and iphone.

For extra security instead of port forwarding through my router i use a vpn, zumocast is there incase the vpn's not available, or i want to stream my stuff through someones browser on their computer.

If you have a bunch of avi's or mkv's then use mkvtools rather than handbrake.

You need to have the Air Video Server running on your Mac. You add the folders you want to share containing your videos in the Server. When thats up and running the Air Video app on your IOS device will detect the Server and you can then connect to it.

I have a question :)

Perhaps you guys can help me out with a current concern of mine:

Say with one of these apps, I leave my MBP on at home while I'm out and about throughout my day 30-40 miles away. I'm sitting in a Starbucks wanting to view a movie from my iTunes on my Mac...

Will these apps still work if my MBP requires a password, though i'm still logged in?

Specifically, my MBP is set up to begin the screensaver after 15 minutes of inactivity, with a password required to get out of the screensaver (security concerns)...My MBP is NOT set up to log out after so many minutes of inactivity, so my guess is that my MBP doesn't necessarily log me out, which makes me wonder if these apps would work, under these conditions.

Am I making sense? :) Cause I'm getting confused.

As long as your Mac is not asleep it will stream. The screen can be locked. I use an app called Caffiene from the Mac app store when I don't want my Mac to sleep. I enable Caffiene and lock my screen if I'm leaving the house. You don't need Caffiene but it's nice to toggle of and on instead of going to power settings. At least for me.

So does it stop your Mac from sleeping while it's playing something? Seems unlikely...

Or you could use an app like Sleepover. I use this to wake my Mini up when I'm out and about and want access to it. Saves having to leave it running.

I Love Air Video, I use it all the time with my NAS, I stream straight from the NAS drive, no Mac required! This is specially good as my NAS also has a built in Bittorrent client, so I can download a video file and then watch it on my iPad. No computer required.

This is also good for the AVPlayerHD app as that now has a built in FTP client so I can ftp over to my NAS and copy the files onto my iPad.

I'm finding I use my actual Mac (1st Gen Macbook) less and less as I find alternative ways to do things using my iPad.

+1 for Plex also.

Love the fact that if you're halfway through watching a movie on the mac, you can resume from where you left off on your phone/pad.

Also makes a nifty remote control.

I'm very intrigued by your post. Specifically, How did you get AV on your NAS. I'm trying to figure out a way to stream media with my computer off. Please share how one loads an app like that on an NAS. Thx a bunch.
