Nobody said people are not professionals or are not doing their work properly because they cannot use pro equipment.

I think the main thing is that you just may not understand Apple. While I'm not trying to make excuses for them, they obviously figured out the logistics to make it work to be one of the most valuable companies in the world.

So, basically the laptop is for all the professionals out there who are doing a number of things.

For instance, Apple touts that they created about 500,000 jobs by opening the App store and allowing programmers to develop for them. Apple knows these people love Macs, and their lives depend on them. Not only that, the time they spend on their Macs helps Apple make even more money... so they build a laptop that would work with professionals similar to that crowd.

Apple has never claimed to make laptop for 3D/CAD professionals. The market is simply too small. Yes, if better parts exist inside, I'm sure many of us would jump on it. However, the programming type above also care a lot about battery life and heat while they're sitting in coffee shops; so it comes back to building a laptop that works for the traveling crowd. If you need more computing power and a large screen, they have other products that fit those jobs.

So in the end, you can try to work with what you got, or figure out how to get what you need for your work. Apple won't change their ways if this is working fine for them; and right now it seems to be working very well for them.

To small? what? Please.

The problem is Apple cant run 3d/cad programs native

So all these companies like Dell, Lenovo, HP,Boxx etc that DO in fact have mobile workstation offerings are delusional and appealing to a delusional demographic....
Not necessarily. Every company does not cater to every demographic. Right or wrong that's how it is. Use the the companies that provide the solutions that you need.

"Professional" users are generally too busy doing their jobs to have time to write long nonsensical rants about things on the internet.

Isn't a "Workstation" GPU just a normal-a$$ GPU with a different bios and a Sh-tload of video RAM?

different driver and ECC GDDR which sorta makes this whole debate kinda funny..

Apple could spend $5 on the ECC stuff and and pull the relevant driver from nVidia/ATI and charge $500 for effort

tl;dr- Why would apple implement something that would increase cost and reduce production efficiency, only to cater to a niche market?

Hey!
I love rants okay, to read them and to rant along. I make time to express all sides of myself it is part of communication, sometimes its vomit other times it has gold nuggets !

What is this about niche market, do you even know what that means? Market place is there for EVERYONE to make the best out of and get the most out there to all the consumers. It is all valid market as long as you produce a good or service that people consider having in their lives. Niche is still a valid and successful market. Just because it does not have a popular top 40's following doesn't make it somehow less. Huge companies are always looking to meet the needs of niche producers because there are golden ideas and potentials there that need to be harnessed period!

Not to mention, depending on what industry you target, niche is more likely to allow you to get away with charging a higher premium than not.

You make a very, very valid point sir, because in fact people are much MORE willing to pay a higher premium for something that speaks to them and only they can have. So yes, people still very much want personalized and custom products / services catered to their very unique needs / standards and even status... Tis an art, tis an art. It is not high demand because those who are WILLING to pay very high premiums keep the "niche" market viable and sustainable. It will never die.

I don't think you know what niche market means.

Did someone assert that no goods should be produced for niche markets? You just cant reach economies of scale catering to niche markets. Niche market products have an inverted slope in comparison to functional products.

Apple is one of those companies that does not really segregate their market. Their products can be used by 3 year olds all the way up to 90 year olds, in whatever field.

The only exception may be the Mac Pro- Something that Steve Jobs really wanted to discontinue since he wasn't too enthusiastic about catering to the 'advanced' market.

For laptops, the market segmentation is just being implemented. Apple did a great job of finally getting their entry Macbook Air to 1000bucks. The entry 13" Pro should be 1500bucks, and 15" Pro 2000bucks. Retina of course, cMBP should be phased out once Apple overcomes their Retina display production bottleneck.
Point is, they finally reached a good differentiation point, compared to the prior 13" VS 15" screen difference(+ graphics card) in White Macbook VS Al. Macbook Pro.

tl;dr Apple No niche market. Apple everyday goods. pew pew.

Believe me, I don't get it either.

But it still would be nice if apple had a low end section (like the airs and maybe a 15" air like machine) for normal people (web browsing, word docs, the occasional photo edit), and then a larger section of higher powered machines. Not specialized to gaming, cad or whatever, just significantly higher specced than the cheaper ones. Apple is not going to cater to one specific market, but I think it would be viable to provide a workstation spec computer

If you need to work on large projects efficiently, a workstation GPU makes a lot of difference. Of course not 2 vs 25fps like erigas here is trying to tell us, more likely 20-30% difference (although it might be lot higher if you have very complex scenes lots of wireframe rendering).
That entirely depends on the software you use and the workload but it is indeed more in the range of max 20-30% performance. Not something I'd call "like night and day" either.

AFAIK, its not true anymore. Workstation cards are just as capable for gaming now.
And vice versa. The difference was there 5 to 10 years ago maybe but nowadays these cards don't differ that much. In quite a lot of cases users don't even notice the difference (like with my users).

I really wish you were right friend! I posted some benchmarks on the previous page between a mobile Geforce and the respective Quadro. It is unfortunately night and day in the pro applications side of things:(!!

Here's to hoping that the iris Pro 5200 will indeed be a a beefed up version just for Apple!! Its Solidworks benchmark is already better than the GT650 by 50% I think!!

The more I read about the m3800, the more I'm inclined to wait for it.

Here's some info on it: http://vimeo.com/71128540

And here's some info on the video card: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-K1100M.98901.0.html

I wish we had this package on OSX though...!

Ordinarily, people in your line of work have a powerful desktop setup at work, and at home.

You're going to need multiple screens that are twice as big as Apple's 15" screen.

So even if you had a macbook superPro which say hypothetically is $3500... you're going to end up at some at some stationary point connected to a power outlet AND multiple monitor(s).

It really sounds like you're complaining for the sake of complaining. Apple has a device called 'mac pro' which caters to extreme power users. Their mobile devices are not meant for such strenuous tasks, and this is not going to change.

If anything, even the Mac Pro is becoming less 'pro' and more every-user friendly with this year's update.

Not really complaining bro, just hoping for Apple to do what others who cater to our growing field do....give us a workstation OPTION for us who need mobility...(and love OSX). By the way the workstation card is more powerful for all gpu intensive applications other than 3d work; video, photoshop, etc.. (except for games)!

Like I stated earlier, I have a mobile 3d scanner which I haul everywhere....Most of the times I have to do the post processing at the job site ,so while being plugged in all the time is absolutely feasible, carrying a desktop computer with me at all times is out of the question!!

P.S. I do have a MacPro and a BOXX workstation at home for the times when I dont work on site..

No, you could just use this "super mac" and wouldn't have to buy two machines. You could have dock with keyboard and mouse and "multiple" screens at work and home. + have a mobile solution

Make your work purchase the machine and that's it.

I agree with you guys. Apple should have powerful laptops. That way i can shelf my ethos. But it's not going to happen.

It doesn't matter what we say guys. Apple's aim is apparently to be as 'average' as possible. by average, I mean as user friendly as possible.

By user friendly, I mean even 5 year olds can use an Air the way I do. There's not option to customize my haswell Air... Apple knows exactly what they are doing.

They're simply trying to put a mac in every house hold.

For me it cost $1500 for an i5/8gb ram/256 PCIe SSD 2013 macbook air with 12 hours.
That's a steam imo. Apple is making their products as affordable as ever.

If they cater to specialized fields, it can't happen.

5 Years ago, I contemplated buying a cMBP for 2000bucks. I didnt... but notice how their products get cheaper yearly.

Razor/blade strategy for sure.

Yea that's what I'm hoping for from this update just for the simple reason that I don't want to have to manage two OS's and not have my environment set up exactly how I want it when I go out on the field.

When I'm at home I am at my workstation with my big monitors. But there is nothing I hate more than going out on the field with a laptop that has just been sitting there for a while. It feels like a rented machine rather than my machine. Know what I mean?
