I just dropped my Macbook Air M1...

If it does not help then why is the forum littered with threads of people asking for help when they have dropped their Apple device (iphone, ipad, macbook) wanting the cosmetic damged to get fixed and the number one reply from experienced Apple owners is 'Go get Apple care'. Are they all wrong then and MR mod's should be removing such posts due to members giving missinformation?
In those cases, yes. AppleCare is for non-cosmetic damage (i.e. things that affect the usability of the device). For example, if I scratched the hell out of my watch and go to an Apple Store to get it replaced, I'm out of luck, but if I walk outside and smash the screen on the nearest hard object I can find then I can go back and get a new one.

Get a Sharpie marker and shadow in the dents & scratches to make them stand out more.

Get a ball ping hammer and put a careful dent into the case, so it looks like you smashed it into someone’s nose.

Folks will believe you’ve been fighting ninjas.

The MBA makes an awesome weapon.

Bring it to Apple and see what they say. I dropped my M1 BMP on concrete floor too and it was dented and scratched. I kept on using it for a couple of months until my screen showed some sign of damages, brought it in for AppleCare+ and they replaced the screen plus a new chassis for the $299 price. It felt so nice when I got it back and to be rid of the dents and scratches.

when did you purchase it? many credit cards offer insurance in the first 90 days of purchasing a product.
In December 2020, so no luck with this option. But thanks for the advice, I didn't know that.

This thread should be a warning to all potential mac buyers and should serve as a warning to all because these type of threads are becoming very common 'I damaged my macbook and don't have Apple care, what do i do'.

GET APPLE CARE!!!!
No. Apple Care won't cover optical damage as others pointed out. This myth comes from some very nice Apple employees giving people a new device in the good old days, but they got more strict about this stuff in recent years.

Or just get careful.
Yea, if you've read my OP, I am very careful with my stuff, I'm somewhat overprotective. But sleep deprivation because the job is somehow stressful right now with lots of people being in quarantine and all... demanded its toll I guess. It was one moment of not paying attention...

Exactly that. Google it.

Can you post a pic of the damage?

Pics or didnt happen

?

Pics, Pics, Pics, Pics.....
You asked for it... Don't blame me for your sleepless nights...

It doesn't look too bad and the hinges don't look damaged. Pretty commonly seen on student used MacBooks. For a low-cost computer like MBA, I wouldn't bother getting any repairs done.

It's honestly not that bad.

Just like with your new car, the first scratch is always the most painful.

That's nothing. Just use the device. In a few years, you'll probably have another device to replace it anyway.

Yeah AppleCare wouldn't cover that. We would've told you no, since it's cosmetic, but that we're happy to replace those parts on your dime. You need a bottom case, clamshell, and top case. Easily over $800 or so. I'd just live with it.

Here's some actual tech gore for your viewing pleasure:

I recognize that ESD mat… ;)

In the past, as many have said, you’d have to physically damage the device enough to warrant service under that fee. In a way, it was Apple trying to keep you from spending money they deemed “unnecessary” and not needed for the actual function of the device to continue.

AppleCare+ recently changed it‘s allowances on cosmetic damage. If the customer wishes to pay ($299 damage fee) for it, they can get their device fixed even for slight cosmetic damage. It’s similar to how you can always pay to replace a battery on an apple device, but you won’t get it covered for free until it’s failing in diagnostics. I would say OP’s computer qualifies for this.

Of course, that will never be a 100% covered scenario. Some damage, such as single hairline cracks, are covered. But the slightest point of impact there, AND BOOM! You’re out of luck.

Anyways, sounds like OP is going to get a case and live with it. Good option for now!

Reminds me of how when I got my current car and was doing some work at a friends shop, I backed my then 2-weeks old to me cosmetically perfect vehicle into a blind corner. Still have the small dent there, it’s a $700 fix, and I’ll get to it eventually. But for now, it’s a functioning car. Why not use and enjoy it and freak out later on it :).

While that would piss me off to no end, I think it could have been worse from a drop.
And if it’s any consolation, I can honestly say that I’ve seen worse offered on eBay for only a little less than retail price.

Wasn’t aiming that at you! Accidents happen. Was just saying AppleCare isn’t the solution to all problems.

Yeah too bad, condolences for your loss - worst case scenario if it really bothers you, sell it for a few hundred less to someone who doesn’t mind, and buy a replacement (spending the difference to repair by replacement)

Those be battle scars. Your laptop has been initiated into the world now. It has a story. It has personality.

If none of the bits are going to cut your fingers up, carry on. Business as usual.

Why do you say it was an accident?. The OP admitted that the macbook was not secured properly in his backpack, the result being it fell out of the backpack, that's not accidental, that's carelessness. People have a very bad habit of passing things off as being an 'accident' when in fact it is not. This was totatly avoidable.

You’re not wrong but we tend to forgive people for their carelessness if there are no major consequences for anyone.

We shouldn't be behaving like that because it allows people to become complacent in their daily lives when their careless behaviour is persistantly passed of as being an 'accident'.

The OP knew hs error, admitted his error and now has to move on. The question is will he learn from this error or do exactly the same thing again a few months from now or even a year from now.
