Will arrive on the 19th

Here's the relevent sentence from the confirmation email from AT&T

"Pre-orders for iPhone 3G S will be shipped with overnight priority and will be processed to arrive as early as June 19, 2009, if submitted by 12 p.m. noon C.T., June 17, 2009"

I ordered mine as soon as possible via the AT&T site. My expectation was that it would most likely arrive on the 19th. If it doesn't and I could have picked one up at the store the same day (as I did when the 3G launched) I am going to be really pissed. I am stuck using a crappy old Razr while I wait and have to leave on a trip on Sunday. This is going to be one more reason to drop AT&T. It's bad enough I have been paying for the iPhone 3G plan for a year in a area that doesn't have 3G! They promised it would be in by the end of 2008 and it's still not up and running yet. AT&T lies a lot.

And if you believe other info out there that the 16GB Black 3GS's are backordered, then it could be even worse.

I am going to look at the glass half full and believe that my phone will be here on the 19th :)

I actually just got off the phone with AT&T myself and the representative stated a few things I thought might be valuable to this discussion:

(1) The "status" of your phone on the order page (ordered / backordered) does not mean anything. She said technically, all phones are on backorder since it's a preorder; however, there has been a glitch with the system in regards to how they were showing on the order status page.

(2) AT&T gets their shipment from Apple on the 17th, she recommended calling back in the evening on the 17th or the 18th to verify shipment date as she said reps will have more information - like whether the item is being packed for shipment, etc.

(3) From what she was told this afternoon, AT&T is close to it's expected shipment level which means those ordering from this point on most likely WON'T get them on the 19th.

Hope this helps! ;)

Excellent write-up. Thanks! Sounds like this rep sounded kinda knowledgeable.

My question for me personally is that I ordered the phone yesterday, but it didn't show up on the AT&T order status page until an hour ago or so. I hope I fall into those that will get the phone on the 19th ;)

Personally, I ordered my about 7:45 AM EST on June 9th - which was my birthday by the way, what an awesome present :D. Mine originally said backordered but yesterday I noticed it had slipped into the other column. So I'm hoping, as everyone is, that AT&T is able to deliver.

On a side note, I've never had a bad experience with AT&T, the reps have always seemed to be friendly although at times I've questioned their product knowledge but I've done that at the Apple Store to. I know the rep I talked to today said they were on reduced lunches and mandatory overtime for some of the call centers so I always try to be nice and that may be why I tend to get good information when I call, ha! ;)

interesting write up. I supposed this is what the CSR told me when I was about to place my order on the 9th. Basically saying that if I act now or by the end of that day, I'm guaranteed to have the phone on the 19th. The backorder status, I feel, was a given seeing that they can't process it as "shipped" until they have the units and they are actually shipped. :)

In mentioning the 17th as the day AT&T receives the phones from Apple, I asked the rep when they would be shipped out. She said they will begin shipping orders on the 17th; however, she thinks they will ship 2-day as opposed to overnight to help offset costs. Maybe some of will get lucky and we will live close to a distribution center and get it on the 18th!

I think that the reason why AT&T is saying "arrive as early as June 19, 2009" is so that in the case of something going wrong, people can't say that it was guaranteed delivery on the 19th.

Yeah, the only way they can guarantee it by the 19th is if Apple provides them enough inventory on time to ship overnight, and FedEx doesn't drop the ball. If all goes according to plan, you'll get it as early as June 19.

jrotunda85, that's really good to know. I feel good knowing that I pre ordered on the 9th. If I see that my iPhone has shipped on the 17th or 18th, I'll be taking the 19th off of work so I can be there to sign for it.

I'm expecting them to be in stores by end of day the 18th. Otherwise they wouldn't be telling people to line up at 7 AM on the 19th. I'm sure some people will be getting their phones Thursday night with some sweet talking.

That's my plan too! Luckily I have a friend who works for the logistics firm for AT&T so I am trying to get some details for all of us.:D

the magical day here for us either should be the 17th or 18th, hopefully not the 19th, when we should receive detailed emails regarding what's going on with our orders!

You know, you can just leave a note on the door so they leave it on your porch, or else you can arrange with FedEx to pick it up at the distribution center.

Personally, I already paid $200 for the phone.. no way I'm going to sacrifice a day's pay on top of that. I'll be just as happy to receive mine after work...maybe moreso. Besides, the last time I took off of work to receive a package, it arrived just before 7PM. I didn't leave the house because I didn't want to miss the truck, so it was a whole day wasted AND a vacation day lost. **** that.

I ordered on the 10th, around 2pm, from the AT&T premier store.

Here's the only email I've received (doesn't even mention the 19th!)

Dear xxxx,

Thank you for your purchase on the AT&T Premier Online Store. We're pleased with your choice of AT&T as your wireless service provider.

We estimate your order will be shipped within 2 - 5 business days pending approval if applicable. We will notify you by email when it is approved and shipped.

Your order may be subject to AT&T eligibility and credit requirements. If we have any questions about your eligibility or your order, we will contact you via email.

If you bought backordered items, we'll ship in-stock merchandise first and then complete your order with a separate shipment. Multiple backordered items will ship when all items are in stock.

:(

My e-mail says it will be shipped overnight and arrive "as soon as" June 19. Hell, I'm just glad I'm getting one and don't have to battle the nerd herd in a line. It'll come when it comes. I've got my worthless, piece of junk first-gen iPhone that has gotten me through since April 2008.

On another note, you guys should check your 3G coverage areas. I thought I was moving to a place outside all hope of 3G, but it's blanketed dark blue on AT&T's map. I guess being a foot from a state highway has it's perks.

So you guys are talking about ordering them from AT&T?

I talked to an awesome Apple Customer Service Rep and she told me that my order was set to arrive June 19th.

Also, this may have nothing to do with this but doesn't Apple use FedEx? Well, the other day I noticed an unusually high number of FedEx trucks on the highway. I joked with my dad that I could probably get my iPhone that day instead of having to wait if the FedEx truck somehow "broke down." :p

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Apple uses Fedex and AT&T use UPS.

Not that it matters because I'm starting to gently tell myself I will be lucky to get my iphone shipped from att by the 26th...

That's a good idea, actually. If you're conservative with your estimations, you'll be pleasantly surprised a lot.

That's the only email I received as well -- except another that said I needed to call customer service to give them some more info about the number I am going to transfer.
