I used to lean towards Apple being too restrictive and not liking it, even though I love all if their products. I just finished two books on the fruit company, in the middle of a third, and realized why they do what they do.
-seamless Integration between all of their products
-building a premium product
-a perfect user experience

I am more than okay with the way they do things now and appreciate the products even more.

Saying you love Apple but wish they'd give us more freedom completely misses the point; it's like saying that you love Ferraris but don't like the noise or the poor fuel economy. Apple's closed systems and tight hardware-software integration are what defines them as much as is their stylish hardware and usability. The limits Apple places on their systems are not incidental, they are essential; without those limits, they would not be Apple and their products would not be Apple products.

Bravo. You've got it.

This is why Android exists. For people who don't want what Apple offers.

The O.P. wants something more like Android. So why not just buy that? Why try to make Apple be like Android? What would be the point of making everything the same? Let Apple products be Apple products and let Android phones be Android phones.

Making everything so similar is counterproductive if "choice" is what one really wants. You need to have options to have choice. Obliterating the uniqueness of the options kind of messes all that up.

but their itunes music format = bleh. i like my open sourced mp3s thank you very much. dont get me wrong, the format itself is actually quite good, compression to sound quality wise, but the fact that it won't easily play on other devices (DRM reasons, and whatnots) kinda ruins it for me, so i never buy through itunes (instead, i do beatport, trackitdown, etc...)

1) MP3 is not "open sourced." It is very bit as controlled as the AAC format is.

2) iTunes music doesn't contain restrictive DRM.

3) You can play iTunes music on Microsoft's Zune, for goodness sake.

In short...I'm pretty sure that absolutely everything you wrote here is incorrect.

The only thing I don't like is their app approval process. Why police the content the way they do? I can understand not allowing apps that mess with the OS in certain areas....ok...But rejecting apps because of political cartoons or insert some other stupid reason. I don't understand their reasoning there. If someone doesn't like said content, they won't get it.

It all boils down to Getting what you pay for. Obviously if you buy a product from Apple you should research it. There you will find what you should expect to be able to do and not to do, if you have a problem with that then you have to live with it, Sorry

I like apple products a lot but sometimes I feel restricted. For example I think we should decide if we could use a video camera on our 2MP 3G iPhones. We should be able to turn on/off flash as needed. We should decide whether or not we want grooveshark mobile. We should decide if we want to downgrade firmware 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 & not let apple stop us. We should decide if backgrounder is necessary or not for our 3G's & 3GS's. We the customer, the people who are paying money for the product should decide what's best for us.

Customers don't know what's best for them. Period.

You make a product. Limit it. Make what it is supposed to do, do very well, even in a limited way. Tell your customers this is how you use it. And move on.

You are simply not the target customer of the iPhone. The majority of customers don't like to "decide" nor do they like "options". It is hard to believe I know, but it is true.

If customers designed products, the iPhone would be 1/2 meter thick with a 4 gegaherz quadcore CPU that you can grill chicken on. Just go and read some of the comments on engadget articles and you will get an idea what I am talking about.

This is the best post in this forum for a long time. It all boils down to personal preference. I love Macs but can't stand iPhone's restrictiveness (it's still an excellent device nonetheless).

Why? I'll buy apple if I want to. I don't have to buy android just because you think I should.

If you think android is better then you can. I don't.

I disagree IMO apple products are premium and pretty darn cool. The question is why restrict the customer - the people keeping them in business?

Well ya in China they have communism so people there have to let the government think for them and make decisions - perfect for apple when it comes to app approval, no video camera then ivideocamera, etc.

Here in America we have a democracy. Just google it too long to explain.

i think the OP just wants what a lot of us secretly want from our OS. a perfect blend of Iphone OS and Android. Primarily iPhone OS, but with some of the key features that Android does so well, like the notification system, sleek looking homepages (i'm hoping iphone v4 will look better with its higher resolution - hopefully leading to smaller icons. they currently look too big and dumb) with much easier access to key info thanks to widgets (i know, a lot of them are junk and gimmicky, but some of them are really useful), and a little more customization. custom message and email tones would be a nice start. as well as a notification LED.

unfortunately tech/gadget junkies on forums are in the minority and our needs are not what apple are interested in, so we either deal with it and accept the shortfalls, jailbreak for fewer shortfalls, or go with android and accept its shortfalls. it depends entirely on what you want out of your phone.

Wow a lot of you got sucked into this one!! Troll on troller!! Of course this topic has been beat around ever sense version one day one.

This person joined a bit under 2 weeks ago and brought us such troll filled gems as :
"How much do you like your iPad?" Which was locked after 11 posts.
"Anyone else find backgrounder relatively useless on iPhone 3G?"
And let's not leave out this wicked awesome topic.

You see people the troll, much like wildlife in nation parks here in the US, relies on stupid people who think it's cute to run up and feed the animals. They sit back and lap it up while person after person "feeds" them....... Don't be that guy folks, don't be that guy.

I'm feeling restricted and wanting to have more flexibility.

That's why android is such a draw/temptation for me. I'm not sure if I'll dump my iPhone but depending what apple does in June and the the upgrade cost will dictate whether I stay with the iPhone or get a droid incredible.

Exactly. I couldn't have said it better. I love my iPhone dearly. My iPad makes my life so much more comfortable. I love watching the game while browsing the web on it.

But I don't think anyone would mind if apple gave us more freedom & more choices. For example, and there are many, not releasing a video camera on the iPhone 2G & 3G. If they thought a 2MP is not going to capture good video then why didn't they put a 3MP camera in the first place?

And if they truly felt a 2MP camera didn't meet apples video camera standards then why did they approve ivideocamera?

It's things like this that can really make a lot of people mad. To make it more annoying, ivideocamera was ready before the 3GS was released but it wasn't approved until after so everyone who bought the 3GS for the videocamera couldve gotten one on their 3G (assuming they didn't mind the lower quality camera).

So yes apple is awesome. Their products are fun and really super nice and a joy to use.

But if they gave us more choices and freedom no one would mind. Take grooveshark. Why wasn't that app approved? Sure if you don't use it you don't care but no one would mind if it was one of the 120,000 apps available because some people do find it a useful app.

Etc etc.

I like homosexuals -- they're really cool and they dress nice -- I just wish they'd stop having gay sex. I don't see why they have to; after all, heterosexuals get along fine without having gay sex. Why can't they just have straight sex like the heterosexuals?

As long as I can jailbreak, apple has resolved a lot of my complaints. I'm now down to led notification light and larger screen. :D

If apple somehow restricts or makes jailbreaking a pain to do, than I will gladly switch to Android.

Don't they do that every time they update the OS, i.e., make it harder and harder.
