As the title says, I do like iOS 7 and the subtle transparency effects. The implementation of this in the video app however is SO ridiculous it is beyond words. I will let the images do the talking.

Here I am watching a video..

Image

Now, I tap the screen to see the time or how long is left of the film..

Image

I mean, how can anyone consider that good design?! SO much of the video is obstructed by these new effects, at least a third of the video is distorted and unwatchable. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Moving on, here I am watching some more of my video and film..

Image

Now, I wish to increase or lower the volume, which is something pretty darn common. It's mere common sense to assume that people do this action quite a lot when viewing a film or TV show.

Image

... and I am greeted with this. Again, the stupid thing distorts SO much of the video. A large chunk of the video is unwatchable for several seconds, and if you do this a lot, it adds up to a lot of time! It is SO darn annoying.

Meanwhile, here is how Google decide to implement showing the user the remaining time or other status during a video.

Image

See the difference? You can actually SEE the video! My goodness I am literally stunned at how stupid Apple designers are at times, I'd love to meet the guy responsible for this and throw something at him. I have tried to ignore this for several weeks since the OS launched but I cannot bear it any longer.

I watch a lot of movies and shows on my phone and it really is SO frustrating.

A man after my own heart.

This is the sole feature/change of iOS 7 that I despise most.

This is a great post. It is well organized to show the problem. I completely agree with you.

With the exception of the volume indicator, I prefer the new controls. They are clear. If you want to see the amount of time remaining in a movie or the name of what you're viewing, you don't want that compromised by trying to blend in with the background. Something that could easily happen with the wrong choice of movie. The google example that is shown, for example, is quite poor at displaying the important information on the screen.

I completely agree. It looks amazing (but it is very obtrusive), except for the volume which I've always felt looked awful and is and has been extremely obtrusive, and the little white rectangles indicating the level of volume have always looked retarded and don't match a sleek cool futuristic design AT ALL and that goes for all iOS versions since it's been kept the same. Sorry but if Apple can't make something better looking than little white rectangles there is a problem.

I'm quite amazed that this hasn't been addressed in the 7.1 betas to be honest! The volume indicator is still opaque and still hangs around too long.

I've been playing Super Hexagon recently and two things have really bothered me. Obviously these issues can be considered more generally.

First, of course, the volume indicator. At the start of a session I might quickly adjust the volume whilst I have time, before it gets too intense, but the opaque volume indicator stays so long I can't see what I'm doing!

Second is the notification banners which are larger in iOS 7 by about 50%! This makes them more obtrusive and distracting. In landscape orientation they're even more noticeable due to the already tight vertical space available.

It's not always just a case of me flicking on DND either as I normally have DND set up to operate only when the phone's locked. Most of the time I want it like that (so I don't miss notifications if I'm using my phone during the scheduled DND period), so it's annoying to have to change that setting the rest of the time so use an app without being disturbed. If the banners were smaller it wouldn't be as much of an issue. The whole point of banners should be that they're not too disturbing.

It's a shame that banners were introduced in iOS 5 to get around the obtrusive alerts, but that this seems to have been forgotten when they made the banners 50% larger...

I posted this on a different thread; it's what I'd prefer:

Some video playing apps have started including this as an option ... so when you alter volume while video is playing ... it alters the app's volume button and the in built blob doesnt show up at all ... (Example - AV Player)

Op whilst I agree with you and I was with a lot of others during the beta stage when apple changed it I was gutted but....

Apple changed it because the number of complaints over ui elements not being visible when certain backgrounds etc where selected, hence it was highlighted as a bug and the adjustment made.

So it looks like in iOS 7.1 this doesn't happen anymore. When you press the volume buttons while watching a video, the translucent bars appear instead of the big volume icon. Try it out.

Watching videos, playing games on a PHONE <

Why have a smartphone then if all you do is use it as a phone? People can get used to smaller screens. I use my iPhone for browsing and films so much at work that I use it as my main device even at home, where I have access to a MacBook.

ummm not for me. i still have the big volume icon.

Doesn't the video app player have the big, square volume and the normal media player have the 'transparent' letterbox?

This has NOT been fixed with iOS 7.1
I still get these huge intrusive button, for instance when I want to turn up the ringer volume I get this huge gray ringer volume icon that takes up so much space, this is really not needed. Also watching videos is the same as what the original poster shows on page 1.

This tells me we still have interns at the helm making simple decisions that are not being executed towards the customer, the interface needs to be overhauled. I find it mind boggling that we the testers have to bring such simple design cues to the table, apples table...they should be bringing design, form and function so that it enhances the user experience. I can't stand watching a video, taping the screen and half of the screen is blocked, that is just not good design elements. How can they not see this?

I was talking about videos specifically. If you watch a video in Safari for example, there is no way to make the picture with the speaker appear.

Which app are you using? If an app uses it's own custom player (for example YouTube and Netflix) instead of Apple's default player then it will need to be modified.

i was using youtube, i will try it just watching a movie though, thanks!

Better question:

Why are you changing the volume levels so often that it's eating away at a significant portion of what you are watching?

I'm always using the scrubbing button whilst watching porn, flippin' frustrating it is too :)
Not very accurate either. Poorly implemented controls, both physically and visually.

That's the YouTube player only. Have you seen the Android video player by default? It has no transparency and takes up a lot of space. As does volume controls. I'll take screenshots on my Nexus 4 and show you what I mean.

----------

If Google can do it way better in iOS it's shameful that Apple can't (or is unwilling). Scrificing usability for some sort of distorted sense of "coolness"/"aesthetics" is a rather horrible way to approach UX, especially on a smaller mobile device that is essentially part of daily life for those who own one.Bingo.

Google makes the player fine in the YouTube app but tr watching a video in Chrome on an Android device. It's even MORE annoying.

I agree with the issue of the Volume pop up but not with the UI controls. They're fine and elegant, and on mine (iPhone 5 & iPad mini Retina), they aren't nearly that blurred, but actually transparent enough I can see what's going on behind it.
