Why have a smartphone then if all you do is use it as a phone? People can get used to smaller screens. I use my iPhone for browsing and films so much at work that I use it as my main device even at home, where I have access to a MacBook.

You know there's things you can do aside from calling people if you aren't playing games or watching video, right?

I get frustrated watching a YouTube video on my phone, I don't know how people can be content watching a movie or playing a game where their fingers take up half the screen.

I get a bit frustrated by this too.

There are times i need to adjust the volume...either video is suddenly too loud or my background is too loud and I need the volume turned up. When i do this the audio block stays up too long, so I forget and tap the screen but that just brings up more transparencies to cover the video.

I tested an S4 a few months back and whatever app i ended up using had a neat feature...touch the screen in a side-to-side motion and it scrubbed forward or aft. touch the screen up and down and the volume adjusted (I think that was the left side, the right side of the screen adjusted the brightness).

either way, if they wanted a Bull Horn make it all on one line and volume blocks to the right of that. BUT I think this "fits" that silly rounded square thing they have going on like with the folders always being a rounded square blob.

What is somewhat funny is the iTunes Festival app showed a different looking Video Player UI. I feel the volume could be on the bottom of the blocks that show up, not a centered one...IF you even need the volume UI to show up...if I hit the buttons and the sound gets louder or quieter, I know it and adjust.

As the title says, I do like iOS 7 and the subtle transparency effects. The implementation of this in the video app however is SO ridiculous it is beyond words. I will let the images do the talking.

Here I am watching a video..

Image

Now, I tap the screen to see the time or how long is left of the film..

Image

I mean, how can anyone consider that good design?! SO much of the video is obstructed by these new effects, at least a third of the video is distorted and unwatchable. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Moving on, here I am watching some more of my video and film..

Image

Now, I wish to increase or lower the volume, which is something pretty darn common. It's mere common sense to assume that people do this action quite a lot when viewing a film or TV show.

Image

... and I am greeted with this. Again, the stupid thing distorts SO much of the video. A large chunk of the video is unwatchable for several seconds, and if you do this a lot, it adds up to a lot of time! It is SO darn annoying.

Meanwhile, here is how Google decide to implement showing the user the remaining time or other status during a video.

Image

See the difference? You can actually SEE the video! My goodness I am literally stunned at how stupid Apple designers are at times, I'd love to meet the guy responsible for this and throw something at him. I have tried to ignore this for several weeks since the OS launched but I cannot bear it any longer.

I watch a lot of movies and shows on my phone and it really is SO frustrating.

I wouldn't praise Google too much - they totally ballsed up their YouTube app on iOS.

Now, with some of the recent updates to YouTube, when you are watching a video and you want to post up a comment, as soon as you hit the 'Comment' field underneath the video, it throws up a comment box (for you to type in) RIGHT OVER THE TOP OF THE VIDEO SO YOU CANNOT EVEN SEE IT PLAYING?!?!?!?!?!:confused::confused::mad: Before - you could comment right underneath the video whilst it was playing..... Who's ever idea was to change this SHOULD BE SHOT....!!!

Oh look, YouTube just "updated" their interface, lol.

I agree that they need to reduce the opacity in general, and maybe the size of the volume control.

On the other hand, I prefer the new larger controls in the screen when watching something, because they are easier to use. The slider handle should be even bigger, at least its tappable region should be.

I don't see the point in complaining about the size of something that won't be there unless you want it to be. As other people mentioned, do what you need to do and then tap again to hide them. That's all.

Yes but excusing it is silly. It should be smaller and also more transparent. Some of us do a lot of scrubbing and these controls are way too intrusive.

tap screen > pause > adjust volume / look at video duration / etc. > play

OP, i understand your viewpoint. i just disagree. with a small amount of real estate to work with (i.e., a 4" (or smaller) screen on an iphone) and the necessity of functional controls, i think that the proportions--which is what i think your post is really about--are acceptable.

re: android, the last 4" screen device running android that i used was manuf. around late-2010. generally, android devs have more real estate to work with.

Even with the small real estate, they could have moved the line with Done and scrub bar at the bottom. Just above the play button bar. This at least allows you to see most of the upper screen when those bars are up. Much better than seeing midsections, and noses. lol I'd rather see someone's chin, or legs cut off, than seeing bellies and noses.

I completely and totally agree with the op. it is extremely frustrating. it is yet another major backwards step that Apple took in ios 7. their design ethic has dropped to Microsoft levels. I still like Mac OS X, but I don't be buying another apple gadget.

Just a question to all the complainer here : did you sent a feedback to Apple on the issue ?

feedback to Apple re ios? that would take a major article to cover all the ui blunders they've made. dozens of them. do you think they care? any usability testing would have exposed them at the alpha ios 7 stages.
