I even got my 1Ghz eMac (ATI 9200) to run Aperture once…adjustments were quite slow but still useable for browsing/cataloguing.

Great machine and very capable. I agree most computers these days are overkill for most people's needs.

I put a Superdrive in it yesterday.

EDIT: My 1Ghz model USB 2.0 btw

Man, that's a sweet 1st Mac. I started with a 400mHz G3! My only suggestion would be to bump up the RAM as much as you can, or like me, you will soon be replacing your machine. :p

Can you use normal laptop PC133 SDRAM because I upgraded my laptop with it, but now my laptop broke so I have some extra ram. I think I saw somewhere that the first eMacs took PC133 RAM. Don't know for sure though...

I started in 2006 with a 33 MHz 86030 in a PB 165. It felt faster than my 2.8 GHz Dell.

I'm tempted to purchase an eMac fairly soon, I've always loved the look of them.

Help!

I bought an emac for peanuts at a garage sale, and all I can say is.. STAY AWAY FROM THEM! it's been nothing but frustration.

The original idea was to buy that machine for my sister so she can check her mail and stop asking me to let her use one of my pcs. It came with Safari 1.03 (85.98.1) and Internet explorer mac 5.2 Neither of wich load hotmail correctly wich was the whole point of this machine!!!

Once Hotmail loads, In safari the text is garbled up, letters on top of each other on the hotmail interface, even with max resolution and text to the minimal size things are on top of each other and the navigation buttons on the page don't work, I can't go to my "sent" folder for example.

I tried using Iexplorer. it doesn't even get that far, it stays stuck at a screen telling me I can use my windows live ID for my xbox, hotmail, etc..

I tried clearing cache and cookies, entering from msn instead of hotmail.. same results.

I have looked for updates on the software, The operating system itself is MacOSX 10.2.8 There are no new downloadable updates available for it or its browsers anymore. A friend came by with his copy of Leopard to see if it could be installed. It gave us some error, I can't remember what it was exactly but it wasn't very specific, more like "instalation error, aborting"

So I ran out of ideas and came here to vent some frustration.

I like the look of the machine, I hate the mouse (wth? only one button?) but I feel the whole platform has been abandoned and getting software for it is very frustrating given the fact that this OS is really incompatible with any software that comes out now.

Sorry if this has been solved elsewhere and I didn't find the post. please redirect me to it.

^^ Download firefox 2. It will work fine http://download.oldapps.com/Firefox/Apple/Firefox 2.0.0.20.dmg

It is nothing to do with the computer. it is just old software and/maybe not enough RAM (might be why leopard would not work)

Safari 1 and IExploder 5? Nobody should be using that today. Just get firefox 2. (I know it is an old version but it is the newest that will work on 10.2)

If you can get 10.4 tiger on there it will run the newest web browsers available.

I got my eMac and all works great! I am just downloading some updates right now. Its about to be OS X 10.4.11. :D
I'll take a picture and show you as soon as I find the camera. I cant find it.
Also, does anyone know how to install Leopard onto an eMac that has a CD Drive?

Firewire DVD burner or put another mac with a DVD drive in target disk mode (t on startup) with a FW cable running between the two. It will work like a normal firewire DVD drive.

What about a USB DVD Drive? Because I have no other Mac, and I dont have a Firewire Drive. Does Apple not have a CD or Online version?

no, and no.

PPC must use firewire to boot, and 10.4 was the last version with a cd alternative.

friend with another dvd equipped mac and a firewire cable would be the cheapest, older firewire enclosure from a garage sale/ebay would be next best.

best of luck.

Thanx dmmcintyre3 I'll give it a shot, I'm gonna try to find Tiger for it and some ram.

I could use my grandpas Mac. And his Firewire cable. :D
But I dont want to have to bring this gigantic eMac over there! hmmm...

I got a Spare 700 Mhz eMac from my school for free. It has a dimming CRT. But I fixed that by taking it apart and removing the Video cable and putting it back in. Beautiful Machine, it was the model with the Combo drive. I stuck a DVD-RW Drive, (I'll probably remove that when I get my iMac G4) and it is running Tiger and OS 9. It rocks. I also put an airport card in it.

Wow, I might get one after I get my 3GS and external HD. Or, depending on the size of the HD in the eMac, I might just use it, along with my 3 PCs, as a external HD!

Though, I have 6 computers ATM, three right behind me, one with two HDs, so I wonder if I actually need a external HD...

Might be a good solution to get the eMac actually since I'm having no luck with OSx86 on any of my machines.

I think the eMac was a really good idea. It was because of the eMac that several school districts around Central Texas didn't switch to PCs (not sure if they are still running Macs though). I recall setting up over 100 of these machines in Summer of 2003 for several different school districts when I was interning at an education co-op.

I got an eMac in Jan 09

I got mum one. My brothers insisted I get her a PC until I told them I wouldnt be Tech support, that they would.
So I got her the eMac. She's happy, it works fine, Im happy no real need for tech support. Only calls I ever get are how does she do something new.

Complaining about the one button mouse? What are you, new here? ;)

Seems like the whole issue is that you are trying to use a really outdated operating system. Upgrade to 10.3 and your experience will be markedly better. 10.4 will be even better, and you'll get compatibility with almost all modern software.

Yes, I'm new here =P

So I finnaly got OSX 10.4 disc, but It wouldn't install.. so after checking how much ram I had it was 124mb ha!!

So I spent hard earned cash into a 512 memory module.

10.4 loaded up, and after a few hours of patching and getting things up to date, the OS is running fine, and so is the latest version of Safari. Hotmail works fine. I installed openoffice (aqua) so my sister can open the junk files she gets in power point and word and all that crap. :D

Power point presentations work, but very very slowly the cheesy wipe effects seem to really bog the machine down for some reason.

Also youtube videos load, and sound fine.. but the video freezes. Thinking I might need a newer driver for the video card went hunting for one.. but without any luck (gforce2 mx)

Maybe this particular processor is just too slow to play youtube videos. Can anybody confirm?

I'm pretty sure you never need video driver's for a Mac. Since there are so few video cards that work on them, they're included in the OS X install disk by default.

Maybe. I have the top of the line 1.42 GHz eMac with the stock 512 MB of RAM, and it plays YouTube fairly well (A little video skipping once in a while, but nothing serious.) But unless you have that model, I couldn't say anything else.

My first Mac was the late 2003 model eMac. I got it in 2004, and I used it for video editing. It always ran Final Cut Studio (except for Motion) flawlessly. It was always a faithful friend and a great backup computer when my MacBook needed to get fixed. I used it a bit this summer. It was a little slower than I remember, but it still ran multiple applications and didn't have any problems. That's more than I can say about any other computer I've ever owned. A kid that I know needs a computer, and I am going to try to give the eMac to him. I'll miss it, even though at this point in time the render times on HD video are awful.

A little update.
I have the slowest one at 700mhz but I did manage to get around 5fps with youtube after I installed the latest flash pluggin from the adobe site and opening youtube with firefox.

I'm really liking the comunity here, really helpful. sorry about hijacking this thread.

Don't hold any high expectation for Flash on older Macs. It's just horrible, even on faster G4's. I usually completely disable it on my G4's, and I don't even have it installed on my iMac G3.
