They are still fantastic machines. Built like a tank, solid as a rock

as far as i know, these machines could never stand up to a school. heck not that many macs could. there is a little iMac g3 (the green sage models) unplugged in the back corner of our mac lab that i always sit by that is cracked so badly that the machine could crack in half if you grabbed it by the handle. I always hum the song "it's not easy being green" when I see it.

The eMacs took that kind of use very well. I used to do a lot of video work for the youth clubs around here, with kids with all kinds of behaviour issues. Their eMacs worked great for many years. In fact I think they still use some of them.

eMacs are build to withstand bad treatment over years in schools
and they do it without complaining ,
you have to love them for their durability they seem to be indestructible
G4/G5 iMacs would be long gone with this school treatment ,
but not so the eMac
they are just getting the odd scratch or he may lose a speaker grill ,
but does that stop them from working ...no :)
some may mention the fan noise , but its very effective when it comes to cooling
mine is running 24/7 and it still maintains the same temperature every day

i ment that at my old school, the USB ports were breaking (the white tab inside the actual port would break off.) making the emac only have 1 USB port.

I am buying another eMac tomorrow! It has Leopard installed and is 1Ghz. This all awesome compared to my previous broken one. And its only $80!!
It also has Office 2008 installed.

Hey I was looking at your siggy and your eMac would run Leopard very well, and your iBook would run Tiger really good too.Just a little tip, both are better than my machines look at my siggy.I have no issues either.

i heard that before the
leopard would run on the eMac , but so far i did not come across a cheap deal to get leopard

as for the iMac g3 , when i bought it it came with tiger , but i tried out all systems on it from 9.2.2 (still on a seperate petition for the od game :D) over 10.0 to 10.4 and find it runs best with 10.3.9 ,
on the iMac i would not change it , it works perfect ,but with tiger on it i always had flash player (like youtube) stutter and lagging problems , but they are gone under panther , youtube runs perfectly fine now with panther installed :)

Really? I gotta get a copy of panther now. Ive never seen my imac run youtube properly.

i cant give a warranty that it works with yours too , mine is running panther 10.3.9 as you can see in the signature , and i am using camino browser which has been optimised for G3 processors which might help too
btw i also dont use the newest flash player i use flash player 9 , as with flash player 10 i alwys had problems too even to watch anything flash related
i also dont use the latest vlc player for similar reasons , since using version 0.8.6i watching avi files is a pleasure

I installed Panther on my G3 and I am typing this on it right now.:D

Youtube doesnt work with safari, it just crashes the application when loading the page. Il be sure to give Camino a shot and downgrade flash player. (UPDATE: Tried Camino, and it worked, but very choppy. This will still be helpful incase i ever need to use my iMac g3 as a secondary computer again =] )

also for some reason the keyboard that came with it isnt working properly on panther, all special charecters are messed up, for example, right bracket is ç and left is ^. The quotation marks are È.

Anyone know the answer to this, it worked fine in tiger and on my Mac Mini.

seems like your language /keyboard settings are wrong for what reason i dont realy know , or maybe its the keyboard , i asume its not a apple keyboard

ok never heard of keyboard problems , then most peope use the original keyboards on them , but i have heard about problems with people using a non apple mouse ,

do it like i did keep the iMac as they are so cute ,upgrade the ram and get a eMac and upgrade at least to 1gb
then you have the best of both worlds :)

It's the original keyboard and mouse (Apple Pro)

That is very unusual , please check all language settings and keyboard layouts

if they match ,with the layout of the keyboard

first go System Preferences>International>Input Menu.

Then select your keyboard layout. that might solve your problem

I just got my hands on a late 2005 1.42 Ghz , 1GB ram , 160Gb hard Drive for 90 euro. It also has USB 2 plus the graphics does core image. I think it was steal for that price. The funny thing was, the online advert was a week old and people were trying to haggle the guy with crazy offers of 40 to 50 euro. I stepped in and said I'll take it thanks. It's for my wife's sister who will only be using it for basic stuff. The eMac will be perfect for that kinda of use and more for many years to come.

Watch out, the 1.42ghz emacs had been known to have their Capacitors blow, if the machine starts acting weirdly, if you hear a hissing smell, or if is smells. Then turn it off immediately and try to replace the caps.

just to make it clear its the 1ghz last models with usb 2.0 , 1.25 ghz models and early imac g5`s who had the bad capacitor problem
Thousands of eMacs & iMacs manufactured during 2004 had the bad Nichicon Capacitors. Apple has issued a repair Extension warranty back in i think 2006/2007 , some owners took that offer and got the logic boards replaced without fuss
the 1.42 models are manufactured 2005 and are fine

my bad, i must've been thinking of the PowerBook G4 1.67Ghz models since those i remember had screen issues.

the eMacs (around 2002 ) suffered also from a screen problem ,
called the "raster shift" problem causes the bottom third or half of the screen to go black, with the rest of image shifting upward and out of the top boundary of the display. Serious static also accompanies the problem, rendering the viewable part of the screen virtually useless, but not alleMacs of that time had been effected , it was caused by the PAV board
which apple offered to replace , but again it was down to the customer to get the emac into a apple repair centre

I believe that was due to wires in the CRT melting and touching eachother shifting the screen, though this is rare to me, ive never seen this happen in real life. only on youtube.

I want to get a 1.42ghz eMac sometime to replace my recently-sold 1ghz model :D It was a really great machine, but the USB 2.0 on the 1.42ghz and the better graphics card would make it a really good secondary computer. They are a bit loud, though.

I just stumbled upon this thread, I never realized how much love there is out there for the old eMac! :) I've got a 1.25 ghz model with 512 mb of ram, running Panther still and had just about given up on it, as I'm having trouble in a lot of areas (can't download the newest versions of iTunes, Firefox or Flash, because of Panther) but I'm now about to switch from Panther to Leopard so that should get rid of the compatibility issues I'm having. I bought my eMac in early 2005 and it's been a very reliable machine for me. I'll never get rid of it, my plan is to buy a Mac mini in the next year or two, but I'll still keep the eMac hooked up in another room just because I couldn't bear to part with this trustworthy member of my family :apple:
