Do you have a credit card on file with Apple?

I order from them, but I don't save my CC info. Specifically as I purchase apps and such through iTunes and I prefer to use a giftcard. In general the less places I keep my cards on file the better though.

If you don't have your CC information on file and/or you removed it from their billing system. I don't see how they can charge you at this point.

Authorizations last 72 hours as said. After that they'd need to rerun your card. To rerun your card it would need to be on file.

I don't have any advise, curious how it will turn out at this point though..

The card is linked to the invoice. It doesn't need to be on file.

The better scenario is if the customer accidentally sent Apple twice the payment (cause the turn around would be that the customer made the mistake that was in Apple's best interest. Like this time Apple made the mistake that was in the customer's best interest).

Would you expect Apple to refund that money? Or would you think that it was the customer's mistake so Apple got to keep it? I mean several people here are saying it was Apple's mistake so the customer should be able to take advantage of that...

I am betting you Apple would refund the money. Most honest businesses will. And I'd stop doing business with a business that did not because I could not trust their honesty anymore (who knows what else they might think is ok to do to me). I know if I overpay on my cable bill they credit me for the next month.

So, yes, in fact, companies do give you the money back if you make a mistake in their favor. So why is it ok not to do the same when they make a mistake?

The best argument by far on this thread.

Another thing worth considering… When you sign up for an account with Apple there's a mile of fine-print that you agree to (but never read), right? I wonder if there's anything in there which says goods do not become your property until paid for in full. If that is the case, you may well be taking possession of someone else's property (Apple's) the moment you open up the package and start using it as if it were your own.

No I'm pretty sure when a company mails you something, and you accept it, it becomes yours. Regardless weather you paid for it or not.

Are you 12 years old? Some of you people are advocating stealing from a major corporation, do you realize you are breaking the law? Again, you signed a binding contract when you AGREED to pay for the product. Nothing is "free".

The kid posting here advocating it is free, could end up in jail, so I'd not recommend encouraging it, unless you want to end up in court.

Like I said, when a company mails you something through the mail - and you accept it; sign for it, or take it inside your house, etc., it becomes your property, regardless if you paid for it or not.

Obviously, Apple will charge the OP for his computer - just because they haven't done it yet, does not mean that they won't.

Let's behave like adults.

First of all, my reply originated from the FTC.

Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?

A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.

Now this obviously was ordered so it's completely different. However, the above situation was in mind when I replied to receiving an item and ownership. Law not opinion.

Anyway, I agree stealing is wrong and never suggested nor would I suggest that.

I once ordered a wallet online... I was at work and we are still on Win XP and IE5, with maximum security - No active X, flash etc.

So I go to the checkout on this website and it takes me to paypal. Stupid work IE5 stalls and doesnt let me go any further. I quit out of IE, and give up, coming to the conclusion that I dont need a new wallet anyway.

A week later I get a wallet in the mail AND a free pen, that had been a promotion at the time of purchase.

Double win!

You make it sound like he walked into an Apple store and swiped it. He ordered it online and provided a credit card for payment. The money is still sitting in his account waiting for Apple to charge him and Apple willingly shipped him the computer... explain to me how that is stealing?

I think OP is trolling. He joined this month just to post this, disappears for 5-6 days, and comes back just to say they still didn't charge his card.

Pretty sure he's been charged by now.

YEA! You really showed Big Wallet who is boss. Screw the giant corporate machines.

Wrong. There there isn't a conveyance of ownership until the sale is completed in it's entirety. A retail sale is essentially a simple contractual agreement. You agree to supply money, they agree to supply goods. If it was sent without ordering? It's free. Key phrase... without ordering.

It just absolves you of receiving stolen goods.

As to the OP anyway, the bank hold is only tied to the authorization number. That authorization allows the merchant to process the charge any time in a 90 day period. The bank just holds the funds for a preset # of days, usually 3-7. If the OP clears the account, the bank has to pay the authorized charge per the fact there's a valid authorization # even if it leaves the account overlimit or at a negative balance. That's when their fees kick in and collection timer starts ticking.

Something like this happened to me when making a purchase. Took them a whole month until the money was taken from my account. Don't celebrate too soon.

Yeah. just wait until it hits reconciliation in their payment system. They'll get their $.

I'm sure they will charge you. But that would be cool if they didn't.

I'm pretty sure apple won't miss 2700 dollars. I'm sure they have screwed people out of more money before.

the thousands they loss on this laptop would explain why they're now charging $4.99 for xcode 4. i hope you're happy.

Those bastards.

when i order apps through the app store, i don't get billed right away. When I ordered my MBP online a few years ago, I went into the Apple Store and bought a giftcard in the amount the computer was going to cost. Then i utilized the giftcard to pay for the computer, that way there was no delays. Apple took the money out of my account immediately as it was a debit purchase.

Every member that belongs to this website could form an opinion and voice it, that does not appear to be what the OP was searching for. It appears he was seeking justification for keeping it. I only believe that because he was asking for opinion, and when he didn't get what he was looking for and lashed back in anger, he knew what he was going to do all along if Apple DIDN'T charge his account, and he wanted to be amongst as many minds that would had done the same thing. He obviously didn't expect what he got.....and too bad.

Ultimately, had it happened to me, I would feel that hint of guilt everytime I went to use it . I don't like having those hints of anything negative on a personal item I use regularly, it dosen't sit well with me. Then I would get the constant wandering thought that if at some point I required service, or purchased something else, the error would be found and corrected at the most in-opportune time. But the biggest thing that would bother me is that knowing.....

You know something though? I have had it happen when I was at a store where they gave me too much change. I have the choice of keeping it and having the employee get docked that money, or returning that change and doing the right thing....not for any other reward but doing the right thing. If I brought it up later to one friend, they would say I was nuts for returning it, what they heck, it was a billion dollar company. That person would usually carry on a but about the fact that they would keep it....is that guilt? justification? what would make someone so angry at another who seeks higher ground in life?

To summarize, it doesn't matter WHAT anyones opinion is because ultimately, you have to live with yourself and your thoughts, decisions, motives, and conscience. If you don't want to hear what other people have to say about it......don't ask ;)
