Is that truly the case? The last time I tried Documents (2 months ago), it was "ok" for read-access but was a total kludge when trying to use it in allowing more than one app to update a file.

I normally use iCloud drive, but I've just tried it by creating a document in word and using Documents as the save location. It saved fine, let me open it after and edit it and the edit saved fine too so I would say it fulfils the requirement of working as a shared document storage that is local to the iPad. It does require that the apps you want to use implement the correct APIs to access the shared documents, but the plumbing definitely seems to be there

iPads are running OS X. Did you watch Steve Jobs' keynote when he announced the first iPhone? iPhone OS (iOS) is OS X.

You meant an iPad should run a desktop UI? No.
Will Apple make a Macbook (or a Macbook like product) running the Ax chip? Yes.

Yes that works. But my scenario involves allowing 2 different apps to edit the document stored in Documents. What I have found is that I have to "copy" the file from Documents to the app's sandboxed storage and then copy it back for each app that is to edit a particular file.

When I get a bit more time, I'm going to document step by step with screenshots what I've been attempting to do. Documents keeps getting mentioned as a solution to a common file system but I've never gotten it to work as such.

If you're having to copy it across then it's because the apps don't fully support the necessary APIs to allow opening from a shared location

Even if the iPad could run OSX, I would still take a MacBook over it just for less smudges to the display, can be closed to protect the screen, and stood up without a need of a kickstand. They last longer while iPads are given away for free in company Christmas parties.

Not that I hate iPads at all. I actually like it more than iPhones even though I find most tablets less useful than smartphones and notebooks. I like how iPads are built to last longer, have fantastic battery, and the better multi-window features that the iPhone Plus lacks.

I just miss having a laptop again especially for typing, browsing, streaming videos, and miss how useful it can be with the more ports (new MBP excluded) And aren't the glowing or non-glowing Apple logos on MacBooks alot cooler to look at than the back of iPads? Talk about more status symbol points, right?

I am reliving my 2006-2008 years again when having a laptop computer was just as important to me as my smartphone and didn't dirty it so easily after a few seconds. I really haven't checked anymore mobile device anymore thanks to a Mac which also run cooler.

So yup. Even if iPads could run OSX, I would still take any MacBook over it everytime.

I agree. I just need a few tweaks to iOS itself and for the apps that I rely on to be updated with enhanced functionality.
Yep, and the problem isn't that the iPad isn't capable of the features it needs to really compete with Windows and macOS or that Apple isn't capable of adding them. They just don't want to.

I don't think that OSX is well suited for tablets or any touchscreen device, whereas iOS, in my opinion, is less versatile than a desktop OS.

While Windows 8 faced a lot of criticism back in 2012, it was the beginning of Microsoft making its desktop OS viable on touchscreen and mobile devices. Apple decided not to go that way.

And Windows 10 is... what? They walked back most of the touchscreen "Metro" elements. It's as "viable" on a touchscreen as OSX would be, which is to say not at all.

It just makes sense. The A10x processors should be fast enough, and it would increase the functionality dramatically. Perhaps they can have a iOS mode that you can switch between.
When Apple is done transitioning iPad Pros to Intel Core M CPUs next year then maybe. But Mac OS on a A9X mobile CPU won't happen.

"We did spend a great deal of time looking at this a number of years ago and came to the conclusion that to make the best personal computer, you can't try to turn MacOS into an iPhone," Schiller says. "Conversely, you can't turn iOS into a Mac.... So each one is best at what they're meant to be -- and we take what makes sense to add from each, but without fundamentally changing them so they're compromised."

Why do you take his words as absolute truth? He is a salesman with a sales pitch

I actually don't need OS X on the Ipad Pro, I have a Mac for that. Plus I have Astropad and may be considering a off brand Cintiq Graphics tablet for future use, even though I still like my IPP. I agree, I would like some changes to IOS, such as the better filing system. I don't like each App storing the data and I would like an Explorer or Finder like system where you can decide where to store files and access them. It would be nice to be able to use some of the Mac Software on the Ipad Pro, so as an artist I could see the advantages of using certain programs like Photoshop, Painter. I'm only a hobbyist though and in my opinion coming from an artist perspective, I think Procreate is an incredible Drawing/Painting app and more than does enough for my needs. I have so many other art apps that I've only slightly tried or played around with, but I always come back to Procreate to do my work. I guess I'm just more comfortable with it.

I think when you are talking adding OS X to Ipad Pro, the price would be even more expensive than it already is. I see it being more expensive like the Windows alternatives. I also think it will make changes to the Ipad Pro, which I didn't like when trying to use the Surface Pros myself. Requiring more hardware and making it thicker and heavier. Most people complain about the size of the IPP right now as it is. I find the IPP size not too overwhelming and thin, not to mention I don't miss the fan sounds and Heat of the surface pros I had. I have none of those issues with the IPP.

You can run OS X on an iPad. Could do it since the iPad 1. It is called remote desktop. Just setup a cheap Mac somewhere and remote desktop into it and boom OS X on your iPad. You can also run Windows and Linux this way and play games. I once played Diablo 2 on my iPad this way.

The only pain point right now is when saving an item to iCloud Drive, it shows a view with every directory (including all nested folders) being fully expanded. When you have a lot of items in iCloud Drive it's near impossible to scroll and find where you want to save.

That is so true! It's the one thing that really grinds my iGears... who though that would be a good idea?

I have some Minecraft Server backups in my iCloud Drive, and along with Documents and Desktop syncing as well, it's just out of control as you can imagine.

I think there's clearly a market for a tablet/ultrabook hybrid as the MS surface pro has demonstrated. Imagine being able to do everything you can do on a macbook, but instead on an ipad pro. With that sexy color-accurate screen running desktop versions of Photoshop and Finalcut, I'd probably get one. The A10x chip will likely make it as fast as a previous gen macbook pro, which would be absolutely amazing!

[doublepost=1477769330][/doublepost]Heck, a 13" ipad pro w/ 16gb ram, 256gb hd, A10x chip, with one-swipe swapping between iOS or OSX mode, and a single thunderbolt 3 port. For.... $1399. Want?

]When i think of this issue i keep coming back to the idea i prefer the combination of a thin client like the surface or ipad combined with a heavy duty laptop or desktop. I find it very useful to use a surface at
my desktop, looking at art reference or solving math problems from the large display. I contemplated viao canvas but just decided splitting out functionality to be better than going for the super tablet. This won't satisfy photoshop artists in general, but i have even come to prefer painting on an intuos while i prefer sketching on a surface. With apple cloud or OneDrive these workflows are very manageable--even working dynamically on both devices on a single file in OneNote!

I am considering swapping to an ipad pro, now. Its close, even if you intend to use either as just a tablet. I do like the new anatomy app, but usefulness of apps vs desktop equivlants is not great
for me. I wish sketchbook for the ipad was more like the pro release.

Nah. I'm still a believer that each device should have its own OS since they are tailored for that device. Once you start trying to blend them all together, ultimately one of the devices suffers due to running an OS that wasn't really designed for it. Let them stay separate and allow them to be as optimized as possible for THAT specific device family. That's my take on it.

If you need a laptop class OS then get a MacBook. If you need the ultimate in portability and like the touch interface then get an iPad or an iPad Pro. It's simple, really.
