Half the fun is guessing if the cute girl in the avatar is really that person.

I think that pretty much, if there's a cute girl in the avatar, it's a guy. :p

I think we should just wasteland threads from people who don't contribute to MR except to post complaining about other people mis-guessing their sex. (I don't mean the OP of this thread  )

Seriously. I could care less. I'm careful not to assume, I think. And as for everyone who really contributes to MR, with the exception of Lacero , we have their sex and/or gender straight alreadym. So it's a non-issue to me. ;)

The one that gets me more is the people who don't post their location and get sarcastic when you post a solution for their problem that doesn't work in their country... that's why the field is there FFS....

Don't you mean, "Yes, please"? :p

Seriously, I see no need for a Gender field.
Yep, that is the correct Austin Powers requirement for the Sex field.

I should probably keep this under wraps, but what the hell:

Next week, we're announcing two major changes. First, each post will be tagged with the geographic location from which you're posting, as well as a link to a Google Earth 3D data view of every location you've posted from along with a color-coded icon to indicate frequency, so that other members will not only know where you are but also whether you normally post from elsewhere. We feel that this will be very helpful, allowing members to no longer assume where someone is and instead allowing them to directly make assumptions about what type of person would be posting from there.

Second, we're eliminating text posting altogether and only allowing video clip posts. There will be much less ambiguity now, and we also expect the forum bandwidth usage to decrease, as posts will probably come mainly from juvenile males trying to see if any women are posting. Spam should also be reduced, as it'll be hard to read (on camera) the entire list of phones and prices which are available. We do expect an uptick in use from all members when Leopard comes out, as the variety of Photo Booth and background effects will make it safer for women to return as well as for Demis to mess with newbies by showing a background of, say, Paris while having a location saying San Diego.

Edit: note my sig....

I'd be happy to see the sex of the member on here. The orientation is really up to the admins. :p

For the record, there are no plans to add more profile fields, but if there were I have ideas for four:

1. A link to your personal User Page in the MacRumors Guides.
2. A link to your post in the The 20 random things you may not have known about me... thread.
3. A field where you supply the name of a custom profile field.
4. A field where you give the value of your custom profile field.

The idea of the custom profile field is that you get to pick one profile field that YOU think should have been available, and then fill it in. For example, you might use them to include one of the following in your profile:
Sex: Male
Hair color: sorta brownish, I guess you'd call it
Grade Point Average: 3.54 if you don't count that stupid Calculus class
Favorite breakfast cereal: Count Chocula, with chocolate milk on it

Funny how those who are for it happen to be male...

Wasn't it just a little while ago that one of our female members went on a rant about how no one knew she was female? I don't think she's responded to this thread, but that's at least one female in the "yes" column (or so I assume.)

But then when I assume, I might risk making an ass out of you and me...

And then I might get embarrassed, and of couse you know what happens when you're embarrassed. You make an ass out of me and Ed.

To paraphrase:

Where men are men,
Women are men,
and children are FBI agents.

What exactly are these? Should I have one? You can link me if there's a thread already discussing this, sir. :)
There should be more about it in an FAQ or an official thread of some kind, but we haven't gotten around to it. Sorry.

The User List and the chance for any member to make a personal Wiki page are simply features of the Mac Guides. Not many members have taken advantage of it, partly because of the lack of publicity. Here is one member who did bother to make a personal page, for example.

To make a personal page for yourself, go to the URL where it would be:
http://guides.macrumors.com/User:your_member_name
and start editing!

Lovely! I, of course, as you won't be suprised if you've read all my other posts, am a member of several sign-language-only email groups. No audio or text or english allowed - we send each other video clips in sign-language. (usually less than 5 MB).

Somewhat faintly related to what jsw actually meant was that consequently we've had some real discussions on how to anonymise sign language texts - blurring the face / hands usually either renders it unreadable or leaves the person still reconiseable, even if it's just by their style of signing / regional accent. Using machine translation video avatars doesn't work either as it comes out worse than a defective Babelfish translation. Currently, the best solution is to get a friend/ actor/ subsitute in to do it, which makes it much harder to be genuinely anonymous.

Back to your regular MR discussion now...

I'm just waiting for the iSightful posts from the moderator with no pants to be posted, I figure it should be good for a chuckle.

The scary part will be the type of sign language they use ...

Seconded on "not needed".

Frankly, I don't care if you guys are male or female, gay or straight (or anything else I may have missed :p) Just keep posting what you're posting, give me entertaining reading and Mac news, give me a chance to contribute the same, and that's really all I need or expect from this site.

Not to be rude or anything, but I see no need to be any more "social" with you guys beyond what's already happening (e.g. in this big public open group setting). Status quo, please. :)

Wish I could take credit for it. Wait, this is the internet I can take credit for anything.

Yup that quote was all me and anyone who says different is a dirty liar. Just check out wikipedia, it'll totaly support the fact that I came up with that phrase (or will shortly :D ).

Even without new profile fields, we already know the most important fact about you, notjustjay: You prefer Pepsi to Coke.

And that's how it works: From our discussions in the forums we learn bits about each other, and we each note what's important to us, e.g., favorite soft drink, political views, ages, schools, professions, etc. It doesn't all have to be in the profile.

Doctor Q's Profile:
Location: Los Angeles
Favorite soft drink: Dr Pepper
What I had for lunch today: Salami sandwich

Exactly. Those of us who choose to post in the forums are already expressing an interest in participating in discussions on various subjects. You got that Pepsi tidbit because I recently posted in a thread about soft drinks. You would also note from my posts that I am interested in things like digital video editing, guitar, etc. As I participate in those discussions I naturally learn things about the people who I am interacting with. As you say, I will note myself what (and who) is important to me.

In real life we don't all go around with "profile" placards announcing who we are and what we like. The forum doesn't need to be any different.

i think it's a great idea to include the gender. It doesn't have to be what you actually are (of course nobody likes a liar) but for clarification purposes it makes things less confusing. The idea isn't to actually help identify someone in real life but how to address them in the forum. Furthermore, if you don't want to fill it out, don't. But for the rest of us it's helpful to know what pronoun to use among other things ;)
