I don't think anyone disputes that the 17P is better than the 13P. The question is whether the 17P is $1.1k better than the 13P. For that, I think there can be serious doubts. $1.1k will buy a lot of chicken nuggets.

I mean. I traded in my 16pm for a 17pm. My cost is $12.50 a month.

I returned my 17PM the next day and stuck with my 14PM. Seriously the only thing I really wanted was USB-C. I'll maybe grab a refurbished 15 or 16 just for USB-C.

Better cellular modem: true, at least if I compare the Air with my old 13 Pro Max. Nice little upgrade. In my area, I would have gotten the same upgrade by switching phone carriers.

Dynamic island as a reason to upgrade?? I think it’s same dog sh** different collar… If this is a reason to change phone, I don't understand anything anymore.

Better wifi modem yes. In practice… same experience for me.

Better screen: very needed upgrade that outdoors peak brightness. One of the weakest points of my 13PM.

Better battery: I just know my old 13 PM was a beast. At least for +2 years. And it was great with a 7,6 mm body.

USB-C: it’s preferable, but.. Just that.

Satellite: it’s good to know that’s exists for sure.

Better chip: it’s a nice update too. It feels a little quicker now. But, my old 13 PM was perfectly fine with a normal use (I don’t play games or edit movies).

Stronger screen: it’s a clear plus. But it’s true that my caseless 4 years old 13 PM was in mint condition. Some few micro scratches on the screen barely noticeable.

But we have to tell everything…

The 17 Pros look tremendously inferior to the 13 Pros. What is objective is to say that the 17 Pros have a more “tool” look. It’s like Apple Watch Ultra, it’s cool wearing it during a outdoor activity or something, but… it’s not for me….

The 17 Pros are 8,8 mm thicker while 13 Pros are 7,6 mm. Better battery? Sure with a chubbyphone. If your phone get chubbier and reach 10 mm body, you will obtain better battery too.

And the most important thing… 13 Pros works perfectly for an average user. You are not going to experience nothing new with a 17 Pro, just a refined better experience. I used my 13PM in the design and construction process of my new home with apps like BIMx and the device worked flawless until this actual year (beyond battery degradation…).

I think it is perfectly reasonable that there are people who find no reason to change.

I was absolutely sure I'd keep my 13 Pro Max for another year, until I saw the Air and fell in love... I thought this device would offer me a different experience, and it has, even though it has its downsides, like the battery.

But I wouldn't have bought a 17 Pro Max, not a chance. Not with that thickness, and not with that utilitarian look and aluminum body.
You claim that all the objectively superior stuff isn’t even better, like that brain dead take about the cellular modem, then state the only subjective stuff as fact, like your opinion on how it looks. What a waste of time writing something like this.

So I wanted to get my hands on the new 17 Pro with the intention of buying one in the Silver color. I picked one up in the Apple Store and honestly it felt pretty much the same as my 13 Pro (size & weight). If it weighed a little less that would have been a plus. Better camera?... sure but then again I don't take 48 megapixel photos on a day to day basis and probably wouldn't anyway and I don't care about 8X optical zoom vs my 4X which is plenty for me.
All in all I was very under impressed with the new 17 offering, especially now with the scratchgate issues.
My 13 Pro, which by the way looks almost brand new with not a single scratch still has 84% battery life.....
I will look forward to the 18 series next year.....
Then you were a savvy shopper by not buying something you didn't need. Well done!

I don't know anyone with a smartphone that doesn't have a case on it. Any flat painted or glass surface that comes into contact with day to day abrasives will wear away at the surface, no? Neither paint, metal, nor glass are invincible to scratches, so I'm unsure why anyone would expect them to be.

Sometimes I look at these posts and think people buy a new phone just to be able to drop it from a great height to be able to say, "Ah ha! It does break!", or, remove all of the internals then run over it with a car to be able to say, "Ah ha! It does bend!", or, take to it with a grinder to be able to say, "Ah ha! It does scratch!" These folks need to get jobs at Apple to put the outcomes of their physics investigations to good use and invent devices which do not break, bend nor scratch. 😁

I don’t understand these posts.

13 pro to 17 pro

Better cellular modem, better camera’s, better WiFi modem, better screen, better battery, USB-C, satellite connectivity, better processor, seemingly stronger screen, Dynamic Island, ray tracing.

If you don’t like the phone. Fine. But the 17 pro is definitely a better phone than the 13 pro.
Yeah 13P to 17p: new battery, better everything and about the same weight.

Had a 13 pro too, and made the switch.

The most noticeable thing for me, is that it’s way more comfortable to hold, 13 pro dug more into my skin than I’d realized, and was heavy to rest on my pinky. I’m ok with the weight on the 17 pro because of better edges, and I don’t feel the strain on my pinky.

The brighter display really helps in the sun.

The telephoto lens is nice, it’s great for documentation purpose. Overall better camera is nice too, although it’s not replacing my real camera.

I was happy to find out there is a new camera button and a multipurpose one, though I don’t use them that much.

That’s the biggest changes in noticed. It’s faster too, but old phone was enough tbh.

What I don’t like is that back is more ugly, and the glass cutout is not well made (not centered and not level with aluminum frame). Might just be mine, but I find it to be sloppy build quality.

While the new camera cutout is ugly, it’s nice that it rest more evenly on a flat surface. That was annoying with the 13 pro when you used it laying on a hard surface and it wobbled every time you touched it.

I preferred the notch, I’m not a fan of the pill cutout.

Better color options would have been nice, why still no green :-( But most I really miss an all glass back, it looks WAY better and was so scratch resistant.

While the upgrade does not feel like a big jump, it had enough small useful features/upgrade for me to be happy enough, and I’m sure it’ll last for next 5 years easy :)

I'm sorry you're not able to understand my message. Next time I'll try to express it in a simpler way and see if you have better luck that way.

Be safe out there.

Agreed. It doesn’t even have the 8x optical zoom. It’s only 4x and a step back compared to last year 16 Pro albeit with a larger sensor.

But most importantly, it’s the ugliest iPhone Pro model yet. The colours are horrible, the weird different colour glass but looks so out of place. It’s ugly.

I upgraded from 16P to 17P and yeah nothing new. In fact I found the camera odd in some cases

I wasn't going to upgrade when I saw the key note but ended up getting caught up in the hype and ordered the Orange

It was amazing but soon felt I might not be able to last a year with this colour and with no real standard features returned it.

If I was coming from anything less than 15P I think its worth it

I miss the days of upgrading each year and I like tech and phones but its the second time ever I've not upgraded

The iPhone XS was to much like the X and was the first time I didn't, now 17P

Here's hoping 18 is a killer year to upgrade
I'm with you. I have the 15 ProMax. I just received the 17 Pro, transferred all my data, except cellular and started playing with it.

The camera is very robust. I can see so far out and zoom in on buildings in another district, but is that why I upgrade?
I wanted a smaller phone, but when I was on the balcony doing 8X, the small phone and myself started being blown around by the wind and the capture isn't great as a result. I thought I wanted a smaller, lighter phone, but when I hold the 17 Pro, I don't feel the love for it. It doesn't feel premium enough. It feels like a regular iPhone not a Pro. The excitement isn't there.

RE: Cosmic Orange. I loved it at first and am very open to new colors. But this shade of orange doesn't appeal to me much. I looked at it under different lighting and still, I'm not moved. I cannot imagine looking at it for a whole year. I'm so torn at this point. I have until October 10th to return it....arghh......

Did you see anything interesting in those buildings windows lol?
Only 15 grams diff between those phones.

My plan was to upgrade...no question. I saw them in person on Monday. Yes the new Pro/Pro Max are much faster, better cameras, MUCH brighter screen, etc etc.

On Tuesday, I simply decided to hold on to my very near mint condition 13 PM. Apple replaced the battery for $84 - plus tax, that alone feels like a massive improvement personally & the phone feels a bit faster. (That could be a placebo effect, who knows.)

I'm perfectly fine with my decision.

The 13 Pro is a great phone. The 17 Pro cameras are better on paper (in megapixels and longer zoom).

But day-to-day, the differences aren't noticable and in some ways worse. Focal lengths for the 13 Pro wide and tele are more natural and pleasing (26mm & 77mm). Low-light performance is BETTER on 13 Pro than on 16/17 Pro. The 3X telephoto is perfect for portraits.

I went from the 13p to 14p to 16p (on carrier deals) and waiting until 18p Day-to-day, most noticable change over 3 years is the USB-C port, newer battery, and brighter screen. The faster speed, dynamic island, AOD, video features, action button, and apple intelligence are all more "ok for free" than essential.
