or just dont get the iPad considering you absolutely do not need it

Wow... Spoilt? Your parents won't supply the money, as you DON'T NEED IT.

No one needs an iPad. It's purely a comfort gadget. It doesn't fulfill any task that other devices can't cover already.

People buy it because they want to, and because they can afford it.

I don't *need* a Maserati, I want a Maserati. My BMW can drive me to work just fine. You don't have the money to buy it, end of the story, it's a great lesson to be learnt: controlling one's desires relative to one's wallet. If you don't learn that now, you'll be miserable all your life. There'll always be something cool and shiny you can't afford, no matter how well off you are.

Selling a Macbook to get an iPad is just stupid. In those situations where you *need* to do something an iPad can't handle, you'll be glad you have a full fledged computer. ditto for your iPhone. And no your old dell desktop can't replace a laptop unless you never leave your house.

I must say I would recommend keeping what you have, and if you really want it so much, get a job. I love the iPad, but I honestly can't think of anything that I could do with it that I couldn't do with my MacBook or iPod touch aside from running a few apps that are too new for my iPod. I would love to have one, but a computer and an iPod (or iPhone) are much more practical, and I wouldn't see myself spending the $600 to get the one that I would want. Even better, I would suggest still getting a job and keeping what you have. A MB and iPhone will be great for your needs, and the money will be very helpful later on (take this part from a college student :p )

Think outside the box.

Sell your little bro out for servitude. He won't really go, but the publicity will garner revenue.:D

wow...grow up. make yourself useful and get a job. wait for the price of the ipad to go down. done.

I've had an iPad for two weeks now. I like picking it up to use and finding new things it can do. Invariably though, I eventually put it down and feel more at home on my old MacBook. The MacBook does so much more and does it better. I can understand the desire to acquire an iPad, but truly you're not missing out if you've already got a MacBook [and iPhone]. Wait patiently, or earn the cash, there is no rush.

Your parents sound horrible, you should murder them, though be sure to make it look like an accident or it'll hold up the life insurance claim. Use the cash from this to buy an iPad.

Alternatively you could stop being a valid advert for contraception and try and earn your own cash or do without

LOL!

They should verify age to be able to register on MacRumors Forums. There have been too many kids whining around wanting an iPad or an iPhone but don't have money to pay for it lately..

You are right.
Your parents don't understand what you really need and want.

They should have given you a netbook and a Motorola Razr.

Okay, seriously.
You have a Macbook and iPhone and now you want an iPad.
First tell me why you "need" it?
It will never be able to replace a computer. Its just a slightly optimized iPhone.
I have no idea how you are going to do your school work on an iPad.

Kid, I highly suggest you rethink what you are doing.
In my opinion you are just being a little greedy (don't worry it happens to all of us, at one point).

I don't think that an ipad is necessary for many people. Sure its like "browsing the web on a magazine" but if you already have an iphone, well you can browse the web on something smaller than a magazine, big deal. Point is, the ipad is just one of Apple's "must-have-but-you-really-dont-need-it" gadgets that people buy. To be honest, I thought it was going to flop decently hard, now I'm shocked at the number of people buying them. I get along just fine with my 2006 macbook and G1 (*gasp* not an iphone) and I'm in college. If you REALLLLY must have one, keep your other devices and look for employment.

I Have A Great Idea

Wait for the next :apple: iPad. It will probably be like the new iPhone! It seems to be a growing trend for iOS devices. cool huh? It would only be a few more months. Learn some patience already. Get a job in the meantime!

I'm going to hazard a guess here..... the OP isn't coming back to read this thread. Instead of finding out the secret to manipulating parents, he got "Get a Job", "Ask a Steve Jobs", "Sell your brother into servitude", "Sell the story of selling your brother into servitude", "You don't need it", and "Get a job."

Too bad he's still not on this thread, I was about to tell him the secret to getting anything you want from your parents.... it's really quite simple. ;)

I'm not going to tell you to give up on your iPad. However, I will say you should get a summer job (since you're not in school right now). Even though you'll be making minimum wage, you'll be able to work everyday; it shouldn't take too long to earn the money to buy your iPad. Since you're paying for it, you can get whichever one you really like. Also, you'll be able to buy accessories and apps for it.
You can also sell your old PC, since you're not really using it.

Thread – or Threat?

wow. what a thread.
I guess the kid may have learned his lesson.
Anyway, he was asking for advice, and so he got, plenty of it.

I resume and feel that the iPad is really just a gadget for anyone using computers on a daily basis. It can be a little more of an instrument for Kids and old people:
  • People, who do not have the time to wait for programs to launch,
  • who cannot keep an overview on a little more komplex menues,
  • who do not need to have multitasking (!)
  • who do not need to send attachements in emails (!!)
  • who do not need to write text with a certain speed.
  • who want to play on the go
  • who have bad eyes and need a low pixel density on a big screen

so, maybe an ipad would really be the right device for the thread opener. For any further advice on life and his position in it, all of the devices mentioned can provide valuable input to the thread opener: iphone, macbook, ipad, parents, macrumors forum, .... :)

Side note:
I will send my iPad 3G back. It already gets dusty after merely two weeks.

So you've had your iPhone a whole month and you want to change it for something else already? If that's as long as the iPhone kept you happy for, do you really think the iPad is going to keep you amused for more than a couple of weeks before you want something else?

You've got great computer equipment now, so just hold on to that for now and save up. I predict that the second generation iPad will have features that will make early adopters wish they had waited. It's always that way. Look at the evolution of the iPod. It was a great device in the beginning, sure, but later iPods can do so much more. Heck, it's been the same story with the iPhone and that device isn't even as old as the iPod.

Plus, learning how to save for things you want is a good life lesson.
