i don't think this is true, the items just change

when you are young, all you can afford is a phone, and maybe a runaround car

then a little older, your watch is part of your status, and a nice car, and a nice apartment

then a little older, a really nice car, a great apartment, what golf clubs you use

then a little older, what paintings you have

etc...

human beings are built on status - when I ask girls to put their number in my phone, I don't want them fumbling around saying "what kind of weird phone is this"

"oh, it's a nexus prime blah blah blah"

this is like instant turn off lol

Anyone who has a family will probably tell you otherwise. There are far more important things in life than how others view you.

Status? I'm 20 and couldn't care less.

I have a pretty expensive car and motorcycle yet I bought them for myself, not to show off! I'm actually using a Nokia 1616 at the moment too and couldn't care less what everyone else thinks or how 'bad' my status is.

that's great, but you could scrounge around like a bum on the street with this mentality

do you have a shower every morning? yes, of course, for your status

the things you possess are just an extension of this

Somebody sent me this in jest this morning.

That's not exactly 'status' from a physical product, is it?

If you buy a phone to make you look good I think it's pathetic.

the problem with switching from apple is - girlz don't dig android...

probably why there is so much hate going on right now

You are with the wrong "girlz" if they want to go out with you based on your cellphone.

I see plenty of guys with 2003 era dumbphones and "girlz" that anyone would die to go out with :p

Status? I'm 20 and couldn't care less.

I'm sure you do. For example, what are you wearing right now. Are the clothes you choose to wear all dirty, worn-down, and over 3 years old? Would you be down on people who take time to look good by wearing nice, fashionable clothes. What about shirts that have your favorite logo on them, like an Apple t-shirt or a jersey of your favorite sports team. By wearing those, you are basically saying "look at me, I'm special because I like the [fill in your favorite team]". Who's that guy in your avatar? Why did you choose to put a picture of him to represent you? Why do you feel the need to let other people what you feel about this person?

The only people I'll give a pass to are those people who put their iPhones in those fugly Otterbox cases. You know, the ones where you see no part of the iPhone's exterior. Otherwise, you're just showing off your awesome iPhone.

This thread explains why such a high percentage of this nation's kids are medicated. You see if the OP didn't have his status symbol he will now suffer from low self esteem leading to depression. We can't have THAT  So give him a prescription, mail the bill to Apple, sue them for contributing to the mental anguish that this child has to live with now because the LATEST thing looks like LAST years thing, and send him on his way.

I'd like to see how well this will build your character by trudging through this harsh adversity

Get over it

23, 3GS and I've never seen my phone as a status symbol.

In the social circle that I move, if you come with the latest tech product out there, it is like... congratulation, you and a thousand more have it, I really couldn't care less. Want cake?

I really can't believe you that you are in the 18-24 age range. Sounds more to me like 14-16.

Anyone who has a family will probably tell you otherwise. There are far more important things in life than how others view you.

I agree, but looking good doesn't hurt

after all, why do we all come to these forums - to check out apple gear, cause it's valuable to us, maybe cause it looks good, or maybe cause it helps you in your job, or maybe cause it gets you excited

either way, you check it out more than you should (i.e. just buy an imac / iphone and never browse on forums)

This is why people hate apple fans.

Then that shows intolerance for people who are different than they are.

Theres the post-having-a-baby-evolution mindset (aka the adult mindset)

Theres the pre-responsibility mindset.

The adult mindset is based on sacrifice for the greater good, the family, and community.

The young mindset is based on the needs and wants of the individual self.

Both mindsets think they are the correct mindset that every civilized person should think in and they usually criticize patterns they see in the opposition.

Both just, are. Neither is more correct.

For example the father is over-protective of his daughter and tries to demonize everything that threatens his way of life, while the young man, just wants to hook up with the daughter.

So people who try to criticize and judge others like this don't understand their place in life, nor fully understand the way the world and civilization works.

The family mindset is not superior just because it is a biologically saturated cliche. In the end, you, and all your family will all die and none of it meant anything. DNA has the last laugh.

Honestly what difference does it make? 3 people stand in line. Joe at the front wants it because it has UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/GSM/EDGE & CDMA and bluetooth 4.0 and A5 processor. Sally wants it because she likes iOS and it works well. Robin wants one because she likes to talk on the phone and she thinks her friends will like her more if she has an iPhone.

What makes my reasoning more legit than your reasoning? It doesn't. Just buy the damn thing if it makes you happy. Jeeze.

and most others in my age range 18-24 are probably the same

status matters when you are young, and a new iphone is a status symbol (at least for the first few months when they are still rare to see)

Siri on its own is not worth the upgrade

the problem with switching from apple is - girlz don't dig android...

probably why there is so much hate going on right now

And just when I thought I heard it all.
What a shame.

You sir, hit is right on the head here. It's funny all these people who think their holier than thou to think such a thing. God forbid they want to look good.

Well the design still looks beautiful than any phone i have tried. And i have seen phones from the XPeria Arc to GS2 to N8 and this design is still classiest. I miss it (am using captivate now) but i don't miss the 3.5 inch screen though :p

Just needs to incorporate a bigger screen inside it and we are golden.

You would fit perfectly in LA, relocate immediately.

Using a phone doesn't make you look good. Buy better clothes.

I don't think any reason is better or worse...some are just more shallow.

I never pulled because I had a phone of a certain type, or a car of a certain type...but then I'm not looking for good diggers. I took the civic on first days and left the m3 in the garage...different strokes.

You're so right. I haven't washed in weeks, nor changed my underpants in months. With dental hygiene, I'm not even going to go there! But you know what just the other day, I popped into the Westfield (a swish shopping mall) and pretended to send a text with my iPhone. Before I knew it, I was marauded by loads of pretty ladies! I kept pushing them away but they kept coming... so many of them! Unbelievable! I was like a pop star!... thanks to my iPhone.

So what you do with your life doesn't count? So having an iPhone is more important than being a decent human being? The expensive toys you own define who you are? It doesn't matter if you, for example, work for social justice?

Nice straw man argument there, but one can certainly meet chicks by having a cool phone. Chicks dig the iPhone. But, now, there will be no novelty factor to reel them in.

All these things you bring up are red herrings. The guy said nothing about the rewards of just life he may or may not cherish.

Besides, this is how, a guy who probably never gave anything substantial to charity (that was not actually self-serving), Steve Jobs would want it.

Anyone who has a family will probably tell you otherwise. There are far more important things in life than how others view you.

See??

Wow... thats EXACTLY what I'm talking about...

What kind of statement is that????

Having a family makes you better than people now?

Having a family is what people who have no other rewarding/redeeming qualities have. It can be argued that having a family is a retarded trap brought upon mans desire to reproduce, in the act of which you forfeit your freedom and independence to be tied down and be plagued with a lifetime of responsibility.

For some its the only way to get a woman, to sacrifice yourself to her.

Very low brow.

So because I know how to flirt with girls and enjoy my life I'm the bad guy?

Everyone who makes fun of this concept doesn't really have social or sexual interaction very often.

Look to the left, notice how pretty I am. I get girls. I know. And they love/loved the iPhone. Its an icebreaker, a standard mating ritual.

You're not better because you have a family, in fact it mostly seems to turn people into fearful, condemning, judgmental, rude people.

Its rare to meet people who have a family and can maintain a thriving social life outside of their family which serve as automatic friends.

You wouldn't understand the world on the other side so don't condemn what you don't understand.

iPhone does make people look cool, and theres nothing CRAAAAZZZZYYYYY or disgusting about that. Being a hater is disgusting.

there are so many fallacies flying around on this thread it's intoxicating ;)

also - false dichotomies are so 18th century, please refrain from using them

Status and perception of it is a FACT of human life. You can be overly concerned with it, and vice versa

My wanting of the iphone for status purposes says nothing about my position on this scale

What I've said is true for most people who Apple targets their products too.

Android continues to fail in generating the mindshare needed for it to stop being a geeky device, and until that perception is broken, the iphone will be a status symbol

Yet you're here because of that "retarded trap." How ironic.
