there are so many fallacies flying around on this thread it's intoxicating ;)

also - false dichotomies are so 18th century, please refrain from using them

Status and perception of it is a FACT of human life. You can be overly concerned with it, and vice versa

My wanting of the iphone for status purposes says nothing about my position on this scale

What I've said is true for most people who Apple targets their products too.

Android continues to fail in generating the mindshare needed for it to stop being a geeky device, and until that perception is broken, the iphone will be a status symbol

swag

I can't wait for an opportunity to use that line lol

No, this is why people hate young people. Glad they've done so much with all the tax dollars I've given them for education.

all young people are the same - young, vigorous, naive at times, and looking to get the most out of life

isn't that better than being old, stuffy with money, and never enjoying life because the kids are tiring you out when you get back after work

kids who, after 18 years will become the very thing you despise ?

you couldn't make this stuff up

When people are running around town looking like jackasses going:

"FIND ME A GREAT SUSHI RESTAURANT, SIRI."

...you'll know they're using an iPhone 4S.

I agree with the OP. I'm was likely going to pre-order the new iPhone, but now that I found out that the new iPhone will be indistinguishable from the current iPhone 4 (on the outside). I'm not so sure now. I was really banking on sporting the new design, but now people looking at me won't even know that I have the latest iPhone and that's not good!

You took the words out of my mouth.

If you are happy with the phone why does it matter that nobody else knows what you have?

and most others in my age range 18-24 are probably the same

status matters when you are young, and a new iphone is a status symbol (at least for the first few months when they are still rare to see)

Siri on its own is not worth the upgrade

the problem with switching from apple is - girlz don't dig android...

probably why there is so much hate going on right now

iPhones, while being cool, are NOT chick magnets, dude. It's never gotten me laid, anyway.

Also, more likely than not girls are indifferent toward whatever phone you have. They use what works, and while iOS works, many also believe Android works as well.

Sounds like a personal problem.

It is also a sign of someone who lacks confidence and self-respect. :)

Obviously you are not pressing the right buttons :p

I can careless if the phone is a status symbol or not - it's how it serves you - I feel like people serves their phone like it's a God and view it as some high priced luxury car. I'm not 100% satisfied with the 4S but with Siri it becomes something that will make my life easier. I think based on Siri alone it will make me switch.

Want status symbol on your phone? Get an element vapor pro aluminum case for $150 - it looks amazing and feels great. It'll make your iphone stand out. I want a redesign as much as the next iPhone buyer but it's because I want the screen size to be larger - not for some pointless "make me look good" factor.

This.

yes, just like the millions of mass produced Mercedez Benz and millions of Rolex watches sold around the world. It's still a status symbol to some.

What's wrong with wanting the best thing available? When I'm rich, someday, I'll want **** that doesn't break and last for a long time. I've had a good experience with my 3g and 4, I just want a bigger screen.
