I *was* excited, but I think AT&T may have killed it for me (the $35 data+text plan)

So I should run and get the last 16GB phone is what your saying? (Not joking).

Hahaha. I am thinking about it. I was needing a second phone and was waiting for this release but I think I might pick up a new old model 8gb for under $200 somewhere. I like the metal back and it is smaller.

I found 1 ATT store that had a 16gb phone left. I'm too much of a chicken **** to buy a used phone or trust someone on craigslist. :(

I can wait a little longer

I am ok with AT&T for the most part (no better, no worse than Sprint - my current carrier or T-mobile which just didn't have service in many places). That said, this is probably a deal killer as I was thinking of switching a 5 phone family plan on Sprint and the extra $75 or so a month is not worth it (OK $60, as grandma would not get an iPhone). At these prices they should give you the 3G if you sign up for a two year deal.

My guess is that we will see better deals from AT&T around the Christmas holidays.

I think what would convince me to go ahead and do it is if they put the FAN discounts back on. Since all these data/text plans are now the same price as any other smartphone, they had better damn well allow the FAN discounts. If they do that, then I'll go for the new one because the discount will offset the extra cost.

So I was planning on upgrading my current iPhone come 7/11, because I would find 3G and GPS very useful. But now that the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field has worn off, the big, giant, ugly monster rears its head: AT&T.

With the data plan going up to $30 and no longer including texts ($5 to get 200 text messages), you'll wind up paying $15 more per month ($35) to get the equivalent of the 1st gen iPhone's $20 plan. I'm not sure that's worth it for just 2x Internet speeds.

Part of me says...I make a good living. It's just $15 a month. But the frugal part of me says...$80+ (after taxes/fees) for one phone line? Considering I don't talk on the phone very much, that's pushing my limits. I'd really like 3G and GPS, but...I don't know, I'm torn. F*&^ing AT&T. I've been with them for years, I should have known they'd eventually find a way to kill some of the coolness of the iPhone.

I'm in the exact same boat. I've enjoyed having my EDGE iPhone for the past year. But with the increased cost of the 3G iPhone, I've decided to pass it by. Instead, I'm looking forward to the 2.0 software and 3rd party apps.

I don't really wanna go searching for it, but its definitely on here on numerous threads. It's $5 for 200, not sure if it's $10 or $15 for 1500, and $20 for unlimited.

Excuse me people.. Where is the proof of this $5 SMS thing?!?

Everywhere. The AT&T press conference specifically said that data was included, and nothing about text messaging -- it falls exactly in line with all their other smartphone plans, which are $30 for data and do not include text. Their basic text package is $5 for 200.

"The new iPhone 3G data plan is $30/month and includes unlimited data and visual voicemail."

Nothing about text messages there.

I know there are tons of threads about it, but where is the proof? All I see is a bunch of FUD.. I read on Ars Technica and Apple Insider that the plans will stay the same, except fot the additional $10 for the 3G access, so you still get your 200 SMS included!

I'm sorry, but read the articles on Ars Technica and Apple Insider.. They both say the same thing.. The plans stay the same except for the extra $10 for 3G data and the extra for corp email.. Until they state that they are charging $5 for SMS, it's just FUD guys! Wait until AT&T reveals official pricing and plans before we have 5,000+ threads about extra SMS charges.. Really guys, who wants egg on their face when they are proven wrong?

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._3g_data_plan_at_30_nixes_rev_share_deal.html is the link to the Apple Insider article specially mentioning the 200 SMS messages are still included..

It's not FUD. It's exactly how AT&T said it in the press conference, and it's exactly what AT&T does with all their other smartphones -- SMS is never included. Let me put it this way...it's probably 95% sure that we're going to have to pay $5 for SMS, because of AT&T's wording and the evidence of their other plans. So, the burden of proof is on anyone who thinks SMS will be included (the other 5% chance), not us.

As posted in another thread:

Supposedly, Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility, said so in an interview.
http://gigaom.com/2008/06/09/att-mobility-ceo-new-3g-iphone-game-changer/

OM: Has there been a change in the cost of data plans?
RDLV: The data plans are different on the 3G iPhone vs. the 2G iPhone. Consumers will pay $30 a month every month, while enterprises will pay $45 a month. This is what you pay us on other PDA devices such as BlackBerry Curve. The SMS messages are not bundled anymore, and you pay for what you want. Again, the prices are based on what you buy.

I still do not see anything where it says the comsumer 3G plan doesn't include any SMS.. Until I see the plans in black and white, the $5 SMS charge is still Microsoft-style FUD.. Actually, I don't see SMS mentioned anywhere in that atricle..

EXACTLY. Are you blind? Look three posts up to the quote from de la Vega! SMS is no longer included. Also, if SMS was included, why would they specifically mention that Visual Voicemail is included in the $30 but not say anything about SMS in the entire press release? It's not there. Welcome to corporate America. It sucks, but that's the way it is, since AT&T is switching the iPhone to a standard smartphone model. What more evidence do you need? Geez, talk about someone with egg on their face. Microsoft-style stubbornness.

That's a crock.. SMS is not mentioned at all in the article.. And until I see the actual plan in black and white, all these stupid posts about the $5 upcharge are FUD, plain and simple..

Fine. Enjoy your fantasy while it lasts. When the plans are officially posted, you can come post your apology for calling people with common sense and deductive reasoning "stupid".

Does the direct quote from the AT&T Mobility CEO just mean nothing to you? I just don't understand how...you know what, never mind, some people can't be convinced of anything no matter how much evidence is laid in front of them. I'll drop it.

And if I'm proven right, everyone who spread the FUD can send me $5 a month to cover for their over thinking the situation. :)

yep me too... keeping my old iPhone (which I had foolishly sold for cheap, but luckily was able to keep it) and waiting until the new iPhone can be unlocked and used with our old sims.

This whole cell phone business pricing is making me gag. You're paying anywhere from $60-$100/month to be able to talk and have a net connection. That is $720 to $1200 annually!!!
Yeah, I hate ATT. v1 iPhone for me.

I don't know what the big deal is. You're paying more for faster internets. How is that any different from any cable, DSL or T-line provider?

I have 2G speed, and I wiould feel cheated if 3G was provided at the same price.

is it true that the old data plan is gone? like if I bought v1 could i get the old plan or would i have to use the new plan?? would i maybe still get the $200 subsidy on the old iphones? you think they would want to get rid of them...
