I didnt have a choice at the time, as being only 2 years old, I didnt actually know anything different :p. But my first conscious decision was when it broke and 9 - 10 year old me mowed every lawn I could for over a year and bought me a nice shiny PowerMac G4. (And its still going strong) - For a 10 year old its the biggest purchase you can make pretty much.

I commend all that hard work you put in to get something you wanted.

If you think about it objectively though, it's funny; working hard in the sun, pushing the mower, doing manual labor. All working toward something that requires sitting and staying indoors.

Alas i'm about to do the same thing. Sadly these things don't print money so I'm heading out to dig a small pond for my grandmother (not that I'm getting paid a lot; what kind of grandson would I be if she had to hire someone else?). She has a gift of gardening and making the house beautiful. Sadly that requires me to go outside and do manual labor.

*thumbs up*

Sharing my experience though, I wore an Apple shirt to the post office, got the laptop, went to my last class, then stayed up for 48 hours in my room and in the 24hr coffee shop customizing the MacBook and making it my own. I love the thing.

Ipod touch was my gateway drug

I'm a grown (ok, old) woman, who made an impulse buy last October and got a 4th gen Ipod touch. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Until i saw an Ipad. Bought an Ipad 2 as soon as I got my tax return. Completely hooked now. Four weeks ago I bought a new PC, 12 gigs of RAM, Core I3 processor. Nothing wrong with it really but two weeks later I shipped it back and drove to the nearest Apple store and bought a 21.5 Imac which I am typing on right now.
It is slick and solid like a German car. One wire. ONE!

I'd never owned an Apple product until I bought that Ipod. Now they own me. And I don't care.

Pandered to by moronic mothership shills every time I enter a store.Thankfully grocery shopping is nothing like this. I will stick with making purchases online and avoiding the retail cesspool.

I never thought I'd say this but I hate the mall. I hate Black Friday.

Online purchase in comfort of home with a good cup of coffee & computer > getting in a hot car, driving for 30+ minutes, walking around for hours, then driving back.

It is surprising how much money an Apple Store makes when the majority of the people I see there are using it for the internet connection or at the Genius Bar.

I am not fond of the barrier to entry a mall creates in general.

Thinking about the retail personnel alone makes me cringe much less the atmosphere.

:D I know what you mean. But, it is the way of the world. Most people want to be treated like kings when buying things, "me the lord consumer, sir" :) .

I can not complain, I dated the chick who sold me my first Mac... So, very good shopping experience there.

But, if you prefer online shopping (I can see a lot of benefits to it), by all means.. just do it (no not Nike person myself :) )

Clothing is another worthwhile exception. I would rate computer cases up there as well. You want the feel of the material in your hands before dropping $150 on the piece of metal you will be housing your hardware in for the next few years.

Saccharin, inept retail personnel are just sickening.

Graduated high school. Needed dependable computer that would last. Wanted an ASUS as I thought I was a computer gamer. (Yea right!) Decided on buying a MacBook Pro. Went into BestBuy heart set on buying a 15" MBP. Walked out with a 13" MBP, Magic Mouse, Incase sleeve, and 3yr Geek Squad Warranty.

Only part I regret is the 3yr warranty.

Why'd you regret the warranty? I'm guessing you're talking about the "Black Tie" warranty? I've got that on my iDevices and it's so nice to have peace of mind. I can throw my iPad 2 in a pool and get it replaced. No way that's possible with Apple Care (unless you sleep with a Genius)

I know how you feel OP, but don't worry about it. It's honestly just a computer. I really wanted one too but after I got it, I was like "oh cool" and that was it.

In spite of all of this, I just want to remind the OP or to anyone else who doesn't have yet wants a MacBook, that it is only a computer. if you're currently bored with the internet, watching videos, or playing games on a Windows computer, you'll be just as bored doing those same things on a MacBook.

I'm on summer break and there have been one too many boring, laid back days in which I searched the internet for something interesting. Of course, when school starts back up I'll have something to do to occupy my time. Until then, however, the internet is just as boring as it was before, albeit it's boring on a great piece of hardware :)

I've had my Mac for a while now and I still keep trying to find excuses to do something on it. Its a great piece of kit that keeps drawing me back!

Great post; I'm still chuckling. Well done and enjoy - I, too came to Apple relatively late and now - by preference - will buy nothing else although my work universe still uses Windows.

Actually, your post would make great advertising copy for Sir Steve himself......

Cheers

I started with an touch to interface with ripped music to a squeezebox. ipeng is great. I had internet access in my pocket anywhere in the house, checked by FFootball scores, email, etc...all from my pocket.
Then I got a phone4, even better.
12-2010 bought an imac. Great screen, kids love the imove/camera thing on the front, I HATE the usbs in back tho. The imac comes with a bunch of fun software but it takes a bit of use to get as familiar with the file systems, and finding things.
After that I bought a Optiplex 390 so I'd have windows.
Would I do it again maybe...or maybe a 390 and ipad.

Got a $1500 check on graduation day from a scholarship. Went to Apple Store the next day and purchased a MBP. Dad says I'm too impulsive and should have gotten a laptop. I say it was the best darn investment I have ever made.

My first Mac was a Performer 450 in the mid-1990s. It was a little beauty. I used to gaze at it lovingly and think how lucky I was. I couldn't afford a printer straight away though, and so it was another six months or so before I bought one (a StyleWriter II at rather a hefty price). I couldn't get it to work. Apple arranged for an engineer to come to my house (I live in the UK) and sort it.

It actually took three visits and a replacement motherboard in the Performa before both computer and printer would work together, but as the Mac was just out of warranty I was really impressed with Apple's service. I still am and since then have bought two brand new Macs, and several secondhand machines via eBay. I have to say that, by and large, the build quality on all these machines has been similarly impressive (after that unfortunate initial experience with the Performa) and they just seem to keep on going.

I've been a Mac fan since I worked on a dinky little SE, back in about 1991. As soon as I saw what it could do – and how it did it – I knew I had to have a Mac.

The only Apple product I have is an old iPod. One of these:

2 years ago I decided I wanted a smartphone. After some research, I wanted an iPhone. I saved some money from my allowance during a year and in the end I had just enough to buy the cheapest version of the iPhone 4. Ended up not buying it. Buyer's remorse were too big. To think of being 21 and buying a 600€ phone... nah. Too much. No way José.

After a while I decided to save up for a Mac. A laptop is typically an expensive product, not to mention I actually had a reason to want a new laptop: my current one isn't as bright as it used to be.

I saved some more... I entered contests and won prizes, which I am now selling to get enough money. The biggest one was an iPad 2 16GB Wi Fi, which is right now giving me 420€. Hopefully I will be able to buy a Macbook Pro 13'' in 2012, as soon as the line is refreshed! :) Can't wait for my first mac experience.

Yea.. That's what I meant. My problem with the Black Tie protection is that I have to raise hell for things to go the way they are meant to be. It's never as "simple" as they make it out to be.

I'm going off to college at the end of the summer. I have an Asus EeePC netbook that I bought with babysitting money last summer, and I was planning on using that for taking to class, but I really wanted a Mac of some sort as a "real" computer (bigger screen, CD drive, etc). Thanks to a full-ride scholarship, I was able to convince my mom that we could afford to buy me a Mac this summer. I ended up getting an amazing deal on my 13" MBP this past Thursday at Best Buy (paid $1039+tax, and got a $100 Best Buy gift card) and I could not be happier! I love this thing.

Very similar to me in many ways. I'm only 24, a college student. Before everything, years ago, i never owned a single Apple product. I decided that instead of that old Sony CD player i used to carry around, it was time i get an MP3 player. Since Apple MP3 players where always considered the best. I got a second generation iPod touch. That little thing changed the way i look at tech forever.

That thing was more than an MP3 player. For me, it was a portable computer. Or a "Mobile Computer" as i've been calling them lately. E-mail, Web browsing, video, youtube, social networking, lots of tools and utilities, lots of productivity software, games and yes, even music. That thing is a computer no doubt.

My mother bought herself an iPad which she ended up never using. a first generation iPad (Wifi, 32GB). So everyone played around with it whenever we wanted. That's when i decided i must have my own (We could play around with it, but not mess with it in anyway). I bought a first generation iPad (Wifi, 16GB) and now i cant imagine myself without it. I use it everyday for many many tasks.

Right now i'm at the point where i want a Mac. I was gonna buy one but the family kept pestering me that an HP computer would be faster and less expensive than a Mac. I took their advice and to this day i consider it the worst purchase i've ever made. I wish i could sell it but i have no experience with Ebay and dont know the first thing about selling stuff. I hear people all the time say (Bought this and sold it, then bought that and sold it), haha i honestly dont know how people do it. I wish it was that easy. I would sell a ton of stuff, believe me.

There is nothing wrong with the HP PC. I just think Macs are better and i want one. That simple. It kinda bugs me just to see it laying there... being ugly. Oh yeah, along the way i also bought a fourth generation iPod touch. The second generation one sits in a drawer. I really wanna find use for it though!

Right now, i'm thinking on buying my first iPhone since i can pay for that as i go (200$ + 70$ monthly vs a huge 1500$ at once. Too much for me) but the family is pestering me that an Android phone is cheaper and has unlimited bandwidth. History repeats but not for me. I wont make the same mistake again. I want an iPhone and that's what i'll buy! Its my hard earned money damn it!

Sorry for the huge post. I'll go away now. *hides*

Two things. I think that if you are only doing general tasks (web browing, email, videos, etc.) then you wouldn't need to shell out for a Macbook or whatever when the HP would do just fine. Of course you're getting a different experience with windows and a different build, however those same tasks will still be the same tasks whether you're on an HP laptop or a MacBook.

Concerning the Android/iPhone thing: Phone's and their OSs have no say so in terms of data, voice, or text. That is all dependent on the carrier and the plan you get. At this point, you have 1.5 hours to sign up with Verizon to choose an unlimited data plan (they'll go to tiered like Att tomorrow). If you want the iPhone, you won't have unlimited data (whether you're on Att or Verizon) and the same is said for ANY Android phone on either carrier.

Sprint offers an unlimited everything plan; don't know enough about Tmobile to say.

At the end of the day, you have to work within your budget. As you stated, you can do an iPhone because it's only a little bit per month as opposed to "1500", which is only 500 more than the cheapest new MacBook.

Owning a Mac is great and all, but at the end of the day if you don't have the money to drop a grand+ on a laptop, don't do it. It's just a laptop. Now we could go on for days as to whether it's worth it to get a Mac over another machine, I'm hoping we don't have to go down that route as I'm not directly stating anything about either system.

Work and save up some money; you can always get a MacBook in great condition either used or from Apple's refurb page for a lower price.

Thank you for your post. You're slapping me with a healthy dose of reality. That kinda thing is good for all of us every now and then.

However! I left out a lot of info. I'm not from the US. I'm close though! I'm from Puerto Rico. Over here AT&T apparently (Just saw it on a newspaper) still offers unlimited data with Android phones through a Puertorican company they own (Centennial). But they dont offer the same plans for iPhones as far as i know (Still doing research). However the phones they're offering are old and run Android 2.2 Froyo. If i'm gonna go with an Android, i atleast want Gingerbread. So i think for me, for my taste and needs, i would much much enjoy an iPhone over an Android phone. But i'm considering it. I'm kinda weighing it right now. Pros and cons and all. The Android phones offer 4G as well. Not sure how fast that is from 3G. All i have is a pre-paid dumbphone so i really dont know how fast each of them are.

About the Macs, i could get a college discount through the Apple Store. But again, i dont live on the US and the Apple Store wont ship outside the 50 states even though we're literally next door. I fly to Florida on vacations and it only takes like less than 2 hours to fly there. That also means i cant buy refurbished Macs. So my only choice is to go to Best Buy (We dont have Apple Stores here either. Not yet anyways.).

Yeah you're right though. A computer is just a computer. I need to drill that into my head. I got an old dell desktop with Linux on it, I got this Windows PC and yeah... i bet a Mac would feel similar. They're just computers. I need to think logically with my budget and needs. So thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it.

Sorry for the long post... again! *hides*

Bought my MBP from last month. I find it much better and reliable than PC. Never used a mac before I bought it. I just went for it, and hoped for the best. The best came :)

No problem; now by no means am I referring to the quality of either machine; I love Macs personally and will probably stay with them for many, many years to come.

Didn't know you were outside the US; I'd love to offer some advice but I don't really know much about the networks outside the US; if you have an option of phones that you would like to know about and what's better or anything, feel free to send me a PM, I know all about phones (both Android and iPhone).

But... you can buy refurbished Macs... I talked to a guy at an Apple store in Jacksonville and he stated they do have refurbs in the store; I would have to call ahead to get it customized but if it was a base model that they sold online they had it also in the store; if you can give them a call and see what you can do. You can also use the education discount in the store as well, although it's only for a new machine, you can't get a discount on a refurb :/
