Exactly. I have a MPB only because a couple days a week I work at home, I'm a software developer - for that reason extra screen real estate and power are valued over portability.

All the rest of the time, I pretty much do whatever most consumers do with their machines, email/web browsing/music playing/etc. If I never used the machine for work I would have an Air.

I agree with this 100%. I have a 24" iMac for my "man cave" and a MBP for business work. If my needs were such that I didn't do much work on a portable, I would have bought the MBA. It is a super nice looking machine.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Unfortunately, everyone IS entitled to their opinion, good, bad, rude or constructive. I prefer to always convey my ideas in a positive manner regardless if it is bad. The point of this thread however (I think :) ) is the OP is sharing his/her opinion about why someone might not want the pro over the air. I have the MBP myself but not after I returned the AIR first. Anyway, Both MBP and AIR are excellent choice. They both have their quirks. I love my MBP so much that I can live with the quirks (if mine had any, lucky me ! LOL) AIR in my opinion is a good portable solution while not as powerful. I sometimes wish I have the AIR because I don't always use my MBP for anything but email, surfing, etc. But when I use it to build websites and play games (Bootcamp), I am VERY glad I have the pro. Good luck with your decision, but if you want my opinion, go with a fully loaded BlackBook. ;)

Simply put.

There are those who will pay £100 extra pounds (from MBA to MBP) for the extra power. They may need it, they may not but like the security that it's there if they need it (not to mention future-proofing).

And there are those that know for a fact they don't need the extra power offered by a MBP, and value the aspects that the MBA has over the Macbook such as aesthetics and superior screen, backlit key's, portability etc.

It comes down to if you are naturally conservative when buying a valuable and expensive product and as such would probably opt for the MBP, or if you have made a decision that you know is sound based on usage.

All this aside, frankly I don't understand the snide corrections and venom that this thread has created. One of the thing's that I love about mac's is that there is no real 'bad mac' that will struggle to fit it's purpose.. as is so often the case in the Windows world on budget laptops. Both side's of the argument own a damn fine machine but just have different usage requirements... does it really matter that someone else live's their life in a different way to you and thus has a different opinion?

Well, I can say for one that if you care so much about how your computer looks, you need to go to the Apple store and check everything out before you buy.

So, OP are you going to switch?

There are plenty of people who bought the air and want a MBP in exchange. I think you are in the minority though :p

The air is good in its own right, and yeah like others have said here, it really depends on what you are doing. Personally the air freaks me out out thin it is. It just isn't natural haha. But if you are not going to be using it as a main computer, I say go for it. Otherwise you are going to be really missing something if you decide to do more intensive work.

I never even looked at the air when it came out. Scratch that, I went in the store, glanced, picked it up, played with it for about 5 min, and that was really enough for me...forever. I can't get over the 1 usb port, and chicklet keys the most, so I never bother to visit it again. However, even though I have a MBP at home, I always go visit its cousins when I am in an apple store or something.

I can certainly do without an optical drive, but speed wise as a main computer, I would look elsewhere.

I don't understand why people purchase the MBP when they have no intention of using the computer for what it's made to do. If you're complaining about something dumb like "ohhh, the ugly grey plastic trim..." or, "oh my god, the interior. whaaah" then go ahead and get your air. It can't do anything except keep you more mobile and do simple tasks like checking facebook or your email which is obviously all you do.

Sorry, I just think it's stupid when people buy the MBP because it's "cool" and don't even ****ing use it.

I agree, this is like someone buying a Mac Pro, instead of a Mini because they like the look more. Moral of the story go to the Apple Store and look at the machines before you buy! If all you need is an Air that is what you should have purchased. Now he's going to start saying that Apple sucks because he got a MBP and doesn't like the look. IMO take your petty complaints elsewhere.

Gotta love comments like this about the Air. What do you think is in it, a G3 with 256 RAM? It may not be a MBP, but it's still a core 2 duo with 2 GB of RAM, making it more powerful than every computer I've ever owned except my current macbook (and nearly as powerful as that), and I can assure you that I was able to do a whole lot more than check facebook and email on my various G4s, G5s, and core duos.

So OP, are you going to switch or not. Please let us know as to why. This information will be valuable to somebody in the same predicament. I switched from the AIR to MBP because I needed the better video card to run Adobe CS3 in Bootcamp.

I have to admit I liked my old clamshell iBook much more than my more recent PowerBook & MacBook Pro. I can't explain why, I just liked the thing more.

It's always nice to have more power, but there is something else, that determines whether you like something or not.
I suspect that i would "like" the MBA more than my current MBP, but I can't justify why.

I saw someone a few months ago pull out a TiBook out of their bag and start surfing away on the web and using iTunes. I was truly amazed at how zippy their 7 year old Mac was! That being said, The Macbook Air is almost like buying a 5+ year old mac. It will still work great i'm sure. But from now on out, it will seem to be slower.

The macbook air is good for one reason only: as a second computer. A complimentary one to your primary one, be that a Mac Pro, iMac, or Macbook Pro. The Air has that, grab it and run aspect that only comes with cutting out all the versatility off of it. It's basically a glorified web surfing tablet. I mean, its not fast, no disc drive, (with matters to me, for watching DVD's while traveling) I know I can download videos on iTunes, but why rebuy all the videos i have in my huge DVD library? And it only has 1 USB port, with pretty much obligates you to bringing along a USB hub.

So while I think its fine if you want a computer to surf the web and weight is your primary focus, I think i'd like to see a future air with the following:

A user replacable battery. If i can do it to my RAZR they can do it for the Air. Built in 3G wireless card. This could truly make it worth buying an Air. It's a web surfing computer, whats the point of putting some bulky ugly as sin air card in the side of it to get internet service? built in 3G wireless would be awesome and really help sell Air's.

And i'd like to see a faster processor, and an extra USB port AT LEAST.

Now he's going to start saying that Apple sucks because he got a MBP and doesn't like the look. IMO take your petty complaints elsewhere.

Don

Excuse me, Don, I'm not some Mac-bashing troll, or some newbie who's just popped up to slag off Apple and their hardware.

I've been a member of this website for quite a few years, and I love Apple computers. I wouldn't be here otherwise, and would be a Windows or Linux user.

So please, before you start sounding like your little friend who you quoted, look into my background - and the possibility that since I was 13 years of age, I've owned 18 Macs, and countless numbers of iPods - all paid for by myself.

So, no - I don't think Apple sucks.

So please, be quiet, and keep your ignorant, useless, and 'petty' opinions to yourself.

Whoa, I think we're all missing the point of this forum, to help one another. If we're going to bash each other, we should be in Windows forum :p JK I used to be a Windows user. Anyway, let's focus on helping people in need better understand their concern and enjoy whichever apple laptop we own. Peace! :apple:

Final Statement.

I've never even considered doing something like this before, and I've been involved in, and started a fair number of threads here.

But the negative comments from mostly new members, who obviously don't seem to understand the MacRumors community is a place to share opinions and help each other, has lead me to not want to read any further updates from this thread. This is because I have found a lot of the new-ish members who have posted in this thread to be rude. I have had my opinions called petty, and also been sworn at.

This is not how things at MacRumors are done, and when people bring out this nasty venom in their posts, I will do the same. The people in question have now been added to my block list.

And all of this because I simply asked would I be better to go back to my original decision?

At the end of the day, its a computer. The way some of you people have responded is shocking.

It is my own personal choice. I should have listened to what I wanted in the first place - and not the posters here, nor the Apple sales man.

To the people who have defended the Air, good on you. It is a very good computer. These are the people who have also tried to help, and explain what the Air is good for - rather than tell me I'm stupid for choosing it over the MacBook Pro.

Maybe these people are jealous because I, at the moment, have a better laptop than them :D

Anyway, to those of you who contributed something to this thread, thank you. For now, I will continue to use my MacBook Pro - as at the minute, it is amazing, and does more than I need. However, if I find I want something more portable, I will change to the Air - and keep you updated on my reasons why, should anyone ever be in the reverse situation of MBP vs. Air, like myself.

To the newbies in this thread who were rude and childish - you'll soon learn that responding to people in the way you have is not the way things are done around here. If you get off on speaking down to people over the internet - you have a serious problem.

To say its only good for facebook is ignorant to say the least.

<end of line>

Sorry, but at my University this is all that I see. My first wake-up was a guy who worked in the theatre building and bought himself a Mac Pro to do his "work" on. He currently uses it to update his facebook profile. He does nothing with this beautiful machine. It sits there and ages but gains NO mileage.

Same goes for the other students on campus. Most with MacBook Pros which don't even use them.

Oh well, I guess these things are like a fad, a nice car, or a beautiful piece of jewelry.

And why can't I use sweet curse words? The forum blocks them off, anyway! Stop getting your panties in a twist. ****!

Exactly. If I could, I'd send you an e-martini.

No rudeness, childishness or "talking down to people" in this post is there?

I truly think you should get the Air. It's a nice computer and it sounds like it would be perfect for your needs.

But that's not going to make me stop finding it fascinating when people choose a computer by form rather than function. It's ok, it's not rude and childish. It's just a different opinion than yours. You don't have to agree with me. And it's ok if you make a typo too. I'm not going to point out that you made a simple, irrelevant mistake as if it makes me smarter than you. And I won't threaten you with being a pariah on the forum, or lord my tenure or post count over you either. What I will do is post my opinion. Even if it's not the same as yours.

Not everybody has the option of going to an Apple store nearby before they buy... and as I said earlier, Apple offers choices because people have different needs.

Choose the one that meets your needs and don't impose your taste on others.

Now, let's all have a cookie...

I know a few people who wish they got a MacBook Air instead of a MacBook Pro. If you find the Air has adequate power for your needs, then sell the Pro and get an Air.

I got the air and I lvoe it, amazingly sleek, a head turner and I'm in the same boat, I don't reall need power in a laptop and Iwatch movie files more than DVDs anyways so I can deal with the lack of an optical drive. the air feels and looks a lot nicer then the pro and the touchpad, keyboard, and magnetic latch really help!

well this thread was certainly an interesting read, i love my MBP i wouldn't trade it for anything.

OP, if you want the air, get the air, the sales rep prolly gets higher commission on the Pro which is why he convinced you to buy it, anyway, im not sure what you were trying to accomplish by posting here. Reading your original post you pretty much just came in here bashing the Pro and asking for a trade...what kind of responses did you want? Reading the entire thread it looks to me like you wanted people opinions that were on your side (that the Air is better than the Pro) not a good thing to look for in the Pro forum.

Try your post over in the Air forum i bet you will get a lot more friendly advice twords the air;)

From 2006 to 2009 I will have gone MBP > MBA > MBP. The Air is brilliant and the mobility is unrivaled. The Macbook is just too heavy something I'm willing to put up with for the computing power of the MBP. I am MetaX'ing and browsing and I get a 5 second beachball on 'Better Battery Life'

The MacBook Pro is a fantastic machine and will remain to be for years to come.

Besides better portability, there's nothing the Air has that's better than the Pro in my opinion.

you've been trolled.

if by chance the OP isn't a troll. Go to the air forums and offer a trade. You'll have many takers.

either way this conversation is useless

Check out my posts, and previous threads, and the fact I've been a member for 3 years, then ask again if I'm a troll.
