Go ahead, mock me mercilessly. I do enjoy the ipad, but constantly, websites dont fully load. I look at a lot of photography sites and things like that and half the images dont load. I always get the "system memory low" message when i go to use the iElectribe and other music apps. Games chug quite often. Doubling the RAM would absolutely help this. This is why people care about this so much, and i find it funny how people get insulted for asking for something like this from a product that is meant to do these things. My phone has twice that amount.

Your phone has twice that...and still has problems loading picture heavy websites, I know my iPhone 4 does. I don't think this would be solved unless the iPad came with 1GB+ of RAM and that isn't happening with the iPad 2 I don't think.

Who decides what is a good experience? How will you know it's a good experience? Someone will tell you?

I have never seen a computer or computer like device that wasn't improved by adding more RAM. Ever. Period. It's evolution. This is why nobody would buy an Atari 2600 today. The games might be fun, but we've gone from 4KB cartridges to gigabyte downloads for titles.

Why do MBP's come with 4GB now instead of 2GB? Snow Leopard didn't change that much.

Why did the iPhone 4 get 512MB instead of 256MB? Because they wanted to improve the experience of the phone.

Why do Apple products increase stats each year incrementally?

More "Numbers" can translate into a better experience and costs go down on stuff like RAM and HD's.

Whatever....this is pointless.

Uh, I try it out? It's not like 512MB magically translates into a good experience anyway; I'd still have to give it a test run, so again, it makes no difference if the number in there matches an arbitrary demand - either it has enough or it doesn't, but I won't know what 'enough' is until I use it.

So you can say moar ram all day every day; it's not very interesting and it will happen anyway.

Yet I have no idea how big the games on Playstation are and it has nothing to do with how good they are.

I don't need to check the numbers, that's for Apple to worry about; I can go straight to the experience and evaluate that. I don't need my RAM security blanket telling me the product is okay, I just use the darn thing to see if it works.

Here is an example...

On the current iPad...and on my iPhone, the photos in this thread do not fully load. About half end up as little blue boxes with a ? in the middle.

Ok. I see them too. However, as a fellow photog I'm on a few related forums but don't get why anyone would embed that many images in a thread.

That doesn't defend the memory issue, but honestly I've never encountered it in my use on any number of forums. Even with plenty of memory I'd have to tell that guy to post a link.

Notebook RAM is dirt cheap. I just bought a 2GB stick for $32 shipped. Is there a reason RAM in an iPad would be any more expensive?

No, providing more RAM would not affect them. Its the Apple strategy, they purposefully don't provide some things just to make you buy the next update:apple:

If everyone was like you guys, products would never be improved.

Agreed completely,

If some of these guys were in charge, we'd still be running Pentium 1s.

I never get "blah, blah, blah, user experience is what matters" people. Guess what? Specifications is what affects and aids the user experience greatly. Why would iPad need a dual core A5? Let's just stick with the first iPhone's ARM11 CPU.

I think they just made up their mind, they're buying it and even though they know that 256MB is absolute miniscule by 2011's standard they are still trying to make themselves believe and justify to themselves that it's OK!

well I'm with the OP. I need 512 minimun. That is largely based on what I have planned for my future iPad 2, but also just on principal that my phone has 512.

I do not believe that they would have to sacrifice the price to upgrade the ram.

I am with the OP here 100% but will keep an open mind. I returned the iPad 1 for this reason. I hate how after opening a few tabs and when I go back to the first tab it had to reload the page due to memory. Some 3rd party browsers helped a bit but not much.

I will get the iPad 2 and if it does this same thing I will return it since Apple has no restock fees now. I mean the iphone 4 had 512 with an A4 and the Ipad 2 should have even more being an A5.

All the signs are pointing to a ram boost, but it kills me that they don't just say it. They don't even have to "say" it, but they could at least put it on the tech specs list on the iPad page. I'm not in a huge hurry to buy one on launch day or anything, so I'll wait for the teardown. But I have to make many large purchases in the coming months and I want to know if I should be factoring this in or not haha.

Oh well guys... We'll have a teardown in a week and then we can all put it to rest I guess.

I called apple and the response was "Sir, we don't have that info available on for our iPads" which means they really don't want us to know the truth.

What's crazy to me is...was every reporter at the keynote too shy to ask Steve how much ram is in his product??

To the OP. I agree with you 100% ...
The ram is not the only thing though, but rather a symptom of a bigger issue.. they did THE BARE minimum to "get by" for another year... they knew that no one was going to be able to match the price and that no one has the IOS with a gagillion apps and they did the smallest upgrade they could while making as much profit as they could...

They did nothing with the ram (as far as we know) and put the CHEAPEST cameras they could get away with in it! while I am sure the processor is faster ( yea for that???) they stuck a less than 1 MP camera in the front and a less than 2 MP camera in the back! They made it thinner... ( woo hoo?) but dropped the weight by only .2 of a pound.. ( WTH?) and instead of putting a new back that wont dent as easily, they kept the same crappy aluminum material.. AND the icing on the cake to top it off they did nothing ( and I mean NOTHING) to improve the screen!

I get that they are trying to keep prices low, and "why should they bother to go ahead of the class?" ....when they were the first ones to be successful with the whole idea and from a business perspective I "get it" but I was SO underwhelmed it wasn't funny.
I sat and watched as engadget blogged the whole thing and thought... UM ARE YOU SERIOUS???
I re-watched the presentation ( Love Steve Jobs, he is a master at salesmanship IMO) hoping to find something aside from hype and the small improvement they made to be excited about, but when push came to shove I took the 800 bucks cash I had planned to spend on the ipad 2.. and bought 2 ipads .."old" version. (my 4 sons are thrilled I have 2 now to share with them instead of me hogging just the one I was planning on getting)(My OH was shocked that I was so disappointed.... as he was SURE I was dead set on getting the newest apple product as I have done in the past!))
I love having the newest and greatest, I have upgraded EVERY iphone out of pocket since they came out and consider myself apple junkie. but I wasn't blowing 800 bucks on a ipad 2 when they basically slapped 2 cheap small megapixel cameras on it, made it smaller and put a new processor in it... the old ipad was fast enough for my "needs" and the 256 ram the put in is a additional part of the bold statement they made, that they feel that they don't have to set a new bar, cause they are going to glide on their laurels for another year.

when the ipad 3 comes out in a year, It SHOULD be a real upgrade finally. ( if not, they will be behind everyone else by then!!) And Hopefully they will have a 128 G version by then too!

It's not about "the truth," it is about how they want to market their product. Apple obviously feels that having to worry too much about a list of hardware specs is something that should be left in the PC era.

That's exactly how I felt and how I perceived this update. If MacRumors allowed us to give members rep points, I would have showered you with them.

Preach on

I'm buying an iPad, but RAM is the deciding factor. If its still 256 I'm getting a refurbed 1. I can easily make do with the prev gen; I happily went back to my 3GS when the iPhone 4 had the antenna issue for me. And you can' beat the used prices on 1s these days.
