This is a huge part of why I decided to return the loaded i9 in favour of the base model.

I don’t think the top end x86 models will be obsolete since they have just released a $60k mac pro, and that won’t be unsupported anytime soon.

Absolutely love mine. Upgraded from 2015. Got a refurbished 2.3 i9, 64gb, 8gb 5500m. Night and day difference in every way compared to my 2015.
How so? This may sound backwards but I recently bought the 16” and now I’m considering returning for a 2015 15”. $$$$ and from what I’ve read it seems the ‘15s are still capable of lasting for the next several years??

Just priced out an ultimate MBP 16, Yikes!!! $6100 with Applecare etc, holy cow, but I think 32gb ram and 2tb is more than enough, I have a 2017 ultimate MBP with 3.5 i7, 16gb and 1tb, but since I only use one machine I might go for the 16 as it has a much bigger screen and better GPU

Really until COVID-19 is gone, save money is best recommendation unless you have to have it.

I'm an austere guy. I buy only what I need and use a lot, and when I buy, I try to buy the best and keep it working for a long time. I'm not into consumerism (nothing against it, just my philosophy). I really don't care about the covid situation, I always save like a big crisis is coming, so no big deal.

Sure thing. It’s arriving next Tuesday-Wednesday. I think the thing I’ll miss the most is the SD card reader, since I have a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone and use it a lot, and I truly hate dongles...

Doesn't your drone use a MicroSD card anyway. So you would need an adapter to use the SD card slot on the older MBP. When I upgraded I found it just as a easy to put the microSD card from my Mavic into a USB adapter with SD and microSD slots plus USB and Ethernet ports.

The problem I see here is even this bad boy will be obsolete when ARM comes out. That’s when I will go from 2015 MacBook Pro to a better one, plus 2019 is not upgradable - you buy what you pay for and Louis Rossman states not to bother.

Well if ARM will came to MacBooks, it will make all the x86 software obsolete. I mean before devs will rewrite all that soft to support ARM, it will take some time XD
And X86 emulation will kill even Apple's ARM chips.

I would not assume the 16'' will become obsolete anytime soon

x86 software will not be obsolete...you just won't be able to run it.

Does no one remember powerpc?

that effectively means obsolete.
I would imagine the Airs will get ARM and after that maybe Pros will follow WHEN there will be a software available

My friend ended up getting the base model, he had the i9 model but he couldn't fully use it since his Final Cut Pro Videos in 4k didn't stress his laptop enough.

He ended up saving 1200$ and bought some extra external SSD

So...how 'bad' is the whole situation with intel cpu's in laptops, and of course our professional mbp future range?

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple...The-best-MacBook-you-can-get-No.460229.0.html
so according to these numbers about pixel response time, i think there are 2 reasons to feel shame for the mbp 16.

1) one of the worst laptop on slow pixel response time on planet (terrible display)

2) a lower state model (MacBook air) has beter display than the premium MacBook Pro 16
Calling the MacBook Air's display better than the 16" display may not be the stupidest thing I've read this morning, but it's at least in the running.

Speaking of hardware, I'm happy. I'm starting to get used to the new keyboard, which feels similar to the bluetooth one I use while in clamshell mode. I was a fan of the butterfly keyboard, but it felt too different so at least now I have the same feeling while typing on the Macbook or on the external keyboard. Having a physical ESC key is a relief, should have been there from the start.
The display is good, not so different from my old 15''.
Catalina is the only problem, 10.15.4 is buggy and that ruins the experience, but at least it is something they can fix with a software update, hopefully.

I'm back after a few days of installing software (Autocad, FCPX, Photoshop...) and playing around with it. First of all, this morning I used my old MBP13 again for the first time since the MBP16 arrived (last Monday-Tuesday) and I have to say the design feels antiquated now. The things that have impressed me the most so far:

-Speakers: Wow! They're something. The best laptop speakers I've ever heard. I haven't used my AirPods Pro or any other external speakers all these days. They sound rich, the distortion rate is very low even at fairly high volume levels and they feel very directionally oriented to the laptop user. By this I mean that if you move 50cm left or right from the center of the laptop you won't really appreciate how good they're, but from the user position they're amazing.

-Display: it feels very modern with those slim bezels, and the size, coming from 13'', is liberating. It's very accurate, it feels really natural.

-Chassis: I feel that both the size and weight of the machine are not overwhelming AT ALL, it even fits inside the bag I had for my MBP13 (Samsonite Spectrolite 2.0 14''). I'm really happy about the decision of buying the 16 model instead of waiting for the supposedly 14'' upcoming model.

-Touch Bar: It's not as bad as I thought it would be. Really. I find it quite useful for FCPX and, overall, having physical ON/OFF and ESC buttons makes it at the very least acceptable.

-Performance: is more than enough for me, I can't really push it to its limits. I started feeling my late 2013 MBP13 was too laggy a couple of years or less ago, so...

-Ports: I've bought a small usbc to micro SD and SD device, but in my use case scenario I don't feel the (very comprehensible) dongle-hatred. I appreciate the ability to charge the laptop from both sides though. However, I think it would be perfect if it had an integrated MicroSD reader.

On the other hand, about the much commented keyboard... Since I skipped all the butterfly products, I can gladly say I don't feel anything special about it, apart from being better looking (more modern aesthetics).

I think the TouchBar is ok. I use the Mac in clamshell mode most of the time so I don't really care, but when I use it as a laptop the TB is sometimes handy, for example I hit stop and play while debugging in Xcode directly on the TB instead of using the shortcut, not a huge time saver but I like it. I like adjusting the volume with a swipe instead of tapping a key multiple times, and other small interactions.
I wouldn't pay an extra to have the TB, if it was optional I'd save money and be happy with the old function keys, but it is not that bad since ESC is now a separate key.

i really hate the touchbar but it doesnt seem like they are ever gonna get rid of it on the high end models...

I’ve read some folks talk about how big and heavy it is, I just don’t feel that. It’s lighter than my 09 13” MacBook Pro.

I actually like the Touch Bar. I’m still testing better touch tool. Most instances I like BTT better but not all, like phone calls.

The TB is going to stay at least on the Macbook Pro.
Why do you hate it? Do you prefer the old buttons or you simply don't use it and consider it a waste?

i dont use it at all and seems like a waste of energy and another part that can break on me
