Steve said the first Intel Macs <snip>

Did I miss an announcement somewhere? Did Apple change its name to Intel or merge with Intel?

^^^ Extensive sarcasm.

low-power 970FX chips??? Does this at least allow for the possibility of a G5 powerbook before the intel switch??? Seems odd to me.

On the other hand Dual core G5 powermacs would be incredible. Four processing units in a powermac sweeeet... :D

So would new PowerMacs presumably use dual dual-core processors and be marketed as Quad PowerMacs?

Also, it's hard to see many people buying PowerPC Mac's when Intel Mac's are not far on the horizon. I could be wrong though...

Dual-core Powerbook G5 :p

970MP @ 1.4-2.5GHz
+
970FX @ 1.4GHz, 13W

= 970MP @ 1.4GHz, 26W (15" PBG5)
or
= 970MP @ 1.6GHz, 32W (17" PBG5)

The TDP of Intel's Dothan processor is 27W.

Apple are clearly moving to Intel for long-term roadmap reasons.

And this really messes up my purchasing plans, argh!

Why would you want to use a slower, lower power G5 processor in an iMac??? Now the mini maybe, that would be pretty stinkin cool.:p

Some nice processors there, the new PowerMacs (MP) and iMacs (FX) should be quite nice machines.

Interesting to see though that IBM have announced them before Apple announced then, obviously something that Apple would not want. I wonder if IBM simply doesn't care anymore.

Remeber also that Motorola just announced the MPC7448 (G4 processor) that uses the 90nm process. That processor uses less than 15 watts to run at 1.7ghz with a 200mhz bus. It also has 1MB L2 cache, etc... Popularly, this processor is referred to as the e600 PowerPC. It is much more likely that this will be the next Powerbook processor.

Lets go apple, put these dang dual dual core 2.5ghz powermacs up on your apple store so I CAN BUY ONE!

Please please please apple take my money.

Supposing they added a quad 2.5 Ghz Powermac to the line, would you rather buy it or the current dual 2.7 Ghz model? (The quad would presumably be more expensive.)

The '4x' in the processor options in the developer tools means they, at least back then (March?), intended to ship quad models.

Dude, quad quad quad quad. Its the only way to roll. See ya 2.7ghz.

Expect one more PPC PowerBook before intel switch

I can't see Apple bothering to put a G5 in their laptops this late into the game. Aren't they expected to be the first InteliMacs announced in early '06? That'd be two major revisions in 6 months or so.
Seems more likely to me that two of these new 970MP's will go into the PowerMacs and Xserves in the near future, with a single 970MP going in the iMac line.

Regardless, it is nice to see new PPC chips from IBM.

Personally, I am convinced that there will be one more PowerBook release before the intellimac version arrives.

1st - Steve said the low-end mac line would be the first intel-macs to debut prior to WWDC 2006. PowerBooks are not low-end

2nd - The dual core Yonah (intel) chip for high-end portables probably won't be in production until late 2006.

3rd - Power Users won't be happy with rosetta emulation of PPC professional apps. Especially since most of these apps use altivec.

4th - PowerBook along with PowerMac are the only Apple lines that are not up to par with high-end x86 products for the same price.

i'd like to see programs that would utilize this quadness before i buy into it.

I think we can still see a Powerbook G5 before the switch to Intel procs. Reason being, I think Apple will make the transition by moving consumer machines first and then pro, instead of portable and then desktop. This way we see the transition go in this order:mac mini, iBook, eMac, iMac, PowerBook, PowerMac.

Customer demand

Apple Developers Conference 2006

"because of strong customer demand and the amazing success of universal binaries, we have decided to support both Intel and IBM in our products indefinately. As we stated before, we want to continue to offer our customers the very best products, and both Intel and IBMs chip roadmaps are strong."

Ultimately, I don't see why they couldn't continue to use both chips. They have to support both platforms for some years to come, so why not just continue to do so?

Just for comparison, the Intel Pentium M 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz are rated at 24.5W. The 2.13GHz Pentium M 765 is rated at 27W.

Reference on Intel site and here .

If the low-power PowerPC 970FX 1.6GHz is at 16W, old Stevo better hope that Intel's got some serious plans to make his power claims accurate.

Holy cow! If the next rev of the Mac mini goes low-power G5 (and gets a better GPU with more VRAM), then the demand will be incredible, while at the same time flood the market for used G4 Mac minis. Double your amount of switchers and make insane profits from the upgraders, all at once!

I like the idea! :D

It wouldn't surprise me one bit. In fact, if that scenario doesn't happen, then I'll be surprised!

This would make Apple 100% architecture-independent (IBM, Motorola/Freescale, intel, AMD, VIA). Yes, I said VIA (could be good enough for a low-cost version, long battery life, sub-notebook iBook). :D

What is more expensive, a dual-core 2.4 Ghz AMD or a single 2.7 Ghz (2.8 Ghz?) AMD?
What do people on the PC side think is the better processor?

Steve said the first Intel Macs would be out by WWDC 2006, and the transition would be almost complete by WWDC 2007.

When and where did he say this about the low end? I have watched the keynote more times than I would like to admit, and he said nothing of the sort during it.

If you can provide a bona fide link to this statement, please do, as I've only heard this as hearsay and rumour from people who know people who know people who know people who know the guy whose brother once met Steve Jobs' brother's wife.

but what is the Front side..wait..this is a G5..:)

acceptable.

now, if they can get this into a powerbook before...say...october..i will buy one. or before february. but really, i don't want to wait now that i can actually afford one.

I heard this on the Keynote. Maybe your video feed dropped that frame.

I would be surprised if these chips don't end up in Power Macs sometime soon. It's not the first time IBM has announced a chip before it appeared in Apple computers, the current G4's used in the powerbooks was announced by Motorola shortly before the Freescale spinoff, and had everyone scratching their heads about the lack of L3 Cache support, and wondering about the fact that the clockspeed of the announced chips was lower than the current G4 lineup (until someone brought up the fact that Apple usually recieved a version that was clocked higher or they over clocked themselves).

I'm gonna take an optimistic view here and say that those college students waiting till the last minute this summer to buy their laptop might be in for some very nice things.

sweet mother of cinnamon, if they put these in powebooks with say...300 or 600 mhz (druel) front side busses, i may become a luddite and buy the G5 as much software as i can't afford and simply hold out on the intel for as long as i can.

perhaps apple made the announcement of the intel switch with this in mind. if they release these, then there will be no slump.
