The first thought this revelation brings to mind is that there might be enough professional employees inside IBM that would prefer a 17" MacBook Pro that Apple might consider manufacturing them again just because of this deal.

Cross your fingers, toes, eyes (and anything else you've got) and maybe we'll get lucky.

I think Steve Jobs would have loved this turn of events with IBM. IBM never got the PC industry and I was glad they were destroyed in the early years.

Buy: AAPL
Sell: MSFT

Won't bother MSFT that much. Likely a large fraction of MacBooks that IBM and other large enterprises buy will either dual boot, virtualized locally or remote desktop into Windows, thus still requiring an OS license, Office applications and support from MSFT. At least in a VM, Windows is locked up where security problems might be a bit more contained.

Who said that they are not running Windows ?

Yes, that comment was hilarious. What on earth did that person think they were running actually? System V, Linux, FreeBSD? I often wonder when people comment if they actually think their argument all the way through.

Agree. His assumption that the company culture would be better was wild.

You don't think that a company that still has no Macs around in 2015 might have some flexibility and obsolete policy issues versus an otherwise identical company with a mix or a lot of Macs? The places with Macs that I have experienced tended to be nicer places to work, with less obnoxious company policies. But that's just my experience.

Big mistake. When they realize what a CPU-clogging clusterfrack OS X has become they'll go running back to Windows.

Hmmm... No idea what you're talking about. Within my family, We've got 4--a 12" MacBook, 13" MacBook Pro, 13" MacBook Air and a 2007 iMac and I've had no "CPU" hogging issues and I run the DEV builds on my MacBook. Maybe get your Mac's checked out.

But, sweet that IBM is using Macs!

IBM is a sinking ship held up by share buybacks.

It still has about 20B in revenues, almost 50% gross margin... So, I think your exaggerating.
They've been sort of adrift though in the last decade.
They got rid of a ton of legacy things they were hanging on too in the last 5-6 years.
They just need to get some focus going.
The whole thing with Apple may be it.

The only CPU-clogging clusterfrack is Windows. And I am reminded of that everyday I use it work. Guess what I run back to every night when I get home. Hint, it isn't Windows.

Are they getting the reach around discount? I seriously doubt that IBM is willing to pony up the roughly $300 premium over a Windows laptop -- makes no sense.

Huh? The company I work for uses the business class (still utter garbage) Dell machines and they are roughly the same price as a Macbook Pro. True enterprises are not buying the $500 garbage you buy at Best Buy.

You want an honest answer? When you don't have to pay thousands for antiviruses, anti-malware, and a huge security team, it's worth it. I'm not saying you don't have to do any of these - although an anti-stuff is included in OS X - but you can definitely save 80% of your current security budget if you switch to Macs.

But yes, I believe they have rebates nonetheless :p
