Sure, self-centered authoritarian egotists firmly convinced that the world revolves around them are definitely the dreamers that change the world. After all what else is in need to be changed to make the world better if not making cool tech devices. It’s not like there are wars, hunger, slavery, exploitation, children that die every minute from curable diseases just so that entitled western people can keep their life style and be able to afford their shiny widget.

and here you are sitting on a chair reading mac rumors all day instead of going and helping those poor children.

I fondly remember when Apple sold the 12” and 14” white iBooks.

  • The 12” iBook had 3.5-4 hours of real-world battery life, while the 14” had 5-6 hours. Competitors had ~2 hours.
  • Competitors (IBM mostly) sold their ultraportable laptops for $3.5-4k because of its size. Apple sold their 12” iBook for $999, LESS than the 14” iBook.
  • Wireless option was cheap and reliable compared to competitors.
I never bought one, but did own the 12” Powerbook, only because it had more vRAM.

Well.. that was part of the strategy

Tim doesn’t have that reality distortion field

Very true...Tim is not a wizard like Jobs was to cast a spell on me to tell me what I don't need...

or a jedi to do a mind trick on me and say.. "pay low cost of $1,000 for a stand"...

True..Jobs was a great salesman!!

When that notebook shipped, having wireless LAN in a notebook was actually completely useless, because NOBODY, NOWHERE actually had an access point for these things. And at that time, almost everybody was still accessing the Internet via a damn 33.6k or - with luck - a 56k modem.

Innovative? Sure. Ahead of its time? Sure. Useless in real life? Absolutely.

Yes..BUT salesman Steve got you to buy the extra card and airport as you went out the door with your colorful clam laptop...classic.

And today we still don’t have LTE built into a laptop. Why is that?

Because Apple is having issues/resistance from global carrier partners to implement imbedded eSIMs which certainly is what Apple is after.

Moreover where is the Apple MacBook Pro that undergoes military grade testing for dust/drop testing!?

Wow. Watching Steve on stage talking about the iBook... What a visionary. It brings back that special electricity in the air, you know?

Truly electric indeed. I'd say Forstall and Serlet had a similar bond with Apple fans in their time. Schiller is the kid at school that can sit at any lunch table (auto invited) :D

Everyone who thinks Apple got cheaper must be out of his mind.

Notebooks nowadays cost about 500$ and you get a decent machine for office work, web browsing, etc that has 16 gg ram and a decent ssd. If you wanna go Apple, you have to pax 3-4 times more than for a windows machine...

In the early 2000s, an Apple with same internals as a Wintel machine was maybe only 10-20% more expensive...

Greedy Cook wants to squeeze his customers like lemons...

Actually, they are exactly the type of people that change the world for the better. Even for those things you claim they don’t. They would certainly do a more meaningful and better job than your run of the mill UN technocrats.

Actually the base MBP with a 256GB drive is pretty much the same price as the equivalent dell latitude or HP elitebook. The MBP is better than those two in most respects, especially a higher res, much brighter screen, only missing a USB-A port.

Only good for people living in big cities. And as others point out, free wifi is not safe. Also, I don't really think free wifi is “everywhere”, at least in Sydney.
This is one of the things which will be addressed in the new WPA3 standard. Should make identity thieves' lives much harder.

Even to this day I still drool every time I see a clamshell iBook. I never had one because they were too underpowered, but oh did I ever want one.

It was actually quite useful within ones own home, though. Of course, I had to buy the Airport card and base station, but I loved being able to take my indigo iBook to different rooms of the house and still have internet access.

Damn old Apple was so awesome.

Design - completely different (not just in aesthetic, but direction) to anything else out there... to put a handle on the iBook was so cool

Tech - Ahead of everybody else. A $1600 notebook that was faster than any other competitor’s notebook?

Pricing - lower pricing for accessibility!

Fun - when was the last time you felt like you were a part of Apple’s presentation? No, now it’s all about multi million dollar celebrity endorsements and Hermes for the rich and famous.

The differences between Steve Jobs (enthusiasm, love for detail, free talking) and Tim Cook are pretty obvious.

When Steve said something, you felt it was coming from the heart. Of course he was a master salesman, but his conviction sounded so genuine.
With Tim, everything that comes out of his mouth, sounds scripted and rehearsed.

Right, but it's used for.... wait for it.... animojis.

At best, you can make the claim that FaceID technology is an upgrade from TouchID, but it's not a new paradigm like WiFi was.
I think these days people are just used to new features and fast technological advancements and became kind of spoiled kids who take anything for granted.
If someone have shown Face ID just 10 years ago then people would gone mad, because it’s really cool. Who could imagine that your phone one day will be able to recognize your face to unlock it? It’s a real achievement.

iPhone itself is just 12 years old. And look how far and how fast it evolved.

This is one of the things which will be addressed in the new WPA3 standard. Should make identity thieves' lives much harder.
The problem is how to upgrade? A simple software upgrade or a costly hardware upgrade? And, how much incentives do supermarkets, Starbucks and users upgrade for WPA3? What about the device support? There are so many questions.
