And that’s just for the official grid, not counting the systems people WANT to exist. Like the “Mac Pro, but not as powerful because I really like the features, but I don’t have THAT much money”. Or the “Mac mini, but powerful enough to run 4 8k monitors”. Or the “MacBook Pro that’s super thick, with a 17 inch screen and ALL DA PORTS!”

Actually, as far as Mac goes, one thing sticks out, the Mac mini just doesn’t belong and shouldn’t exist.

Hey - I own a 2010 Mac mini as a server, my mom uses a 2018 Mac mini, and honestly I’d switch to a 2018 Mac mini + eGPU to replace my hackintosh as my heavy lifting machine if I had the money. Don’t knock it! It firmly belongs in the consumer/desktop camp.

This is one of the things which will be addressed in the new WPA3 standard. Should make identity thieves' lives much harder.
The problem is how to upgrade? A simple software upgrade or a costly hardware upgrade? And, how much incentives do supermarkets, Starbucks and users upgrade for WPA3? What about the device support? There are so many questions.

I loved the old colourful iMac/iBook designs, they were a breath of fresh air against the rest of the industry.

The iBook design owes so much to the Newton eMate 300.. Can see the eMate as a test run for a lot of the weird clamshell design. The eMate is heavy too, and much more indestructible.

Not as useful though. :)
Thanks for mentioning the eMate. The article describes the iBook's clamshell as "unique," but indeed it wasn't.

I still have three eMates, all in working condition. Pretty impressive devices.

Kind of like Donald Trump or any master BS’er/politician, etc etc. That’s his job.

Sure, self-centered authoritarian egotists firmly convinced that the world revolves around them are definitely the dreamers that change the world. After all what else is in need to be changed to make the world better if not making cool tech devices. It’s not like there are wars, hunger, slavery, exploitation, children that die every minute from curable diseases just so that entitled western people can keep their life style and be able to afford their shiny widget.
Nice strawman. Nobody ever said that innovators like Jobs and Musk obviate the need for solving war, hunger, slavery, exploitation, and inadequate healthcare. What the post you quoted said is that people like Jobs and Musk change the world, and they absolutely do. Do their innovations solve all of the world's problems? No, but that's an entirely different question and a ridiculous standard.

The unboxing video; What is the media's deal with black dudes and blond white chicks? That that the ultimate black man's conquest, some kind of reparation?

The first laptop with wireless networking? Tim Cook take a hint, that's what innovation is.

Animojis are not innovation.

And neither its adding cellular to a laptop. That's called adding an obvious and straightforward feature. If there were a business case to be made implementation is certainly a no-brainer. There's a reason *other* laptop manufacturers have not added cellular, as well. And it's not because they don't know how, or that it's non-obvious, or difficult.

A few examples of innovation are TouchID, FaceID, haptic trackpad, beamforming (both directions) in HomePod, MagSafe, AirPods and case, Apple's force touch display, Apple's upcoming XDR display, Apple Watch, iPhone, iPod, and on and on. Each of these required significant R&D to come to fruition.

Speaking for myself...I do not want to pay an extra wireless subscription fee for an additional device. There's plenty of free WiFi, and tethering is included in my phone plan at no extra cost.

I remember the RAM could be dislodged from the clamshell ones in the rude ways of the shipping process... my tangerine ibook arrived playing dead, but the RAM was readily reseated. After that the thing worked like a charm and got handed off twice in my family. I got a key lime one when I agreed to hand down my tangerine original.

Can't remember why I let the key lime clamshell ibook out of my sight. It had to have landed with someone in the family who ended up short a functional machine... so I let them have it and went back to Apple's well yet again for myself. That's what happens when you try to keep a spare around... I have always ended up back in the market for another Apple notebook before I thought I would, and not because the machines were no good. :D
So fortunate for iBook owners. My experiences for the white MacBook (mid-2006) suck. It would automatically shut down, although it was fixed by a firmware update later. The most annoying part is its palm rest which would quickly turn yellow and its edge would easily crack. I got a free replacement of the palm rest later, but the new one still turned yellow and cracked when the first MacBook became vintage.

I would gladly take that (iBook) keyboard on my current mbpro.
Mac laptop keyboards of that era were... not great. They were quite mushy and crap tended to accumulate in them.

You are giving customers WAYYYYY too much credit mate. They are not going to be “significantly more savvy”. Quite the contrary, they stay where they are, pretty much.

So, he tears apart the distortion field to everybody, and shows how truly expensive Mac are. I guess this is a good thing? Not sure.

Guess the iPhone should never include personal hotspot feature or even mobile data feature in the first place.

Oh wait, what do you mean 80% of areas are not covered by wifi signal? Gtfo.
I was being sarcastic. Obviously we need LTE in phones or they wouldn’t really be useful as phones. We could use it in laptops too.

tell me one thing he did/doing anywhere close to snake oil..just one.

his failures? how do you get success without a failure..yes spaceX failed multiple times to get their first success. you know how much money that innovation of re using launch vehicle is saving? until recently NASA paid billions for space programs to third party aeronautic companies..come on man..be realistic.

you are comparing Elon to politicians..???????

But then why have LTE iPads then?

I actually would just use my phones hotspot and not buy another LTE enabled device for how little I would use it outside my house but just playing devils advocate. ;)

It’s a good question! My mom was convinced she needed an iPad with LTE. I tried to convince her to just use her phone, but it’s not an iPhone, so it takes a few more steps, it’s not seamless. Plus her carrier has restrictions on hotspot data, even though her data is “unlimited”. And she doesn’t have WiFi at home. Basically she’s weird.

The differences between Steve Jobs (enthusiasm, love for detail, free talking) and Tim Cook are pretty obvious.

I don't despise Tim Cook like many people do, but you're right – there is a stark contrast between Steve's Apple and Tim's Apple. The new Apple is far more conservative and doesn't have "fun" in the same way. I miss that. I miss Steve.

Apple needs to loosen up and start having fun again, I say. Get creative. Remember how iPods went through many different form factors? Seems that Apple has stuck with the same form factor for Macs and iPhones for a very long time without testing new ideas on the marketplace (Mac Pro aside). Yes, their current designs are industry-leading. But there's no fun in them. Nothing new and exciting in terms of appearance.

Okay, you misquoted me which is bad form when responding to a discussion. I said "significantly more computer savvy." I didn't say smarter. People understand computers better now than pre-2000. I don't think that means people any smarter however.

Are these the same consumers that willingly give over their personal details to whatever website requests it, then wants to know how they got hacked?

Yes. These positions are not mutually exclusive. People are more computer-savvy nowadays but that doesn't mean they're smarter in other ways. People have always fallen prey to scammers. Having a better understanding of computers and the Internet doesn't change that.

Animojis are not innovation.

Those that continue to harp on features like Animoji as something "not needed" fail to see the bigger picture.... the research and development of technologies that are used in new and exciting (and useful) ways. Think bigger! Step back and see the pieces that make up the puzzle. Many of those pieces are very innovative (ie. Face ID), and industry-leading.

Ok my bad.

Those flashbacks are so sad. The comparisons between the era when apple was a leader in tech and features compared with this current one is innevitable...

Well yes but... Apple bought the company ‘Realface’ who basically shrunk down a Kinect and developed Face ID. So then is it Apple who innovated or Realface who they bought who did?

Erm no, he’s a big headed self opinionated egotistical idiot who refuses to see his failures, not a business man at all and a very very very insulting human too, I would NEVER trust his robot to stick a microchip in my brain so I can talk to a computer which he’s now trying to flog!
Also I dislike how he’s been allowed, or anyone for that matter, to put thousands of satellites into orbit because you know there isn’t already enough human junk circling the globe already....

Elon is no where near the man Jobs was fact.

He would never design products like the ones in this story, the cool sophisticated look they now have, no he builds plastic way overpriced cars that the workers put together with electrical tape. Oh and then offers cars as self driving even though they are not and not legal to be either..

Steve Jobs was loved by investors for his fantastic approach to tech and his vision. Investors hate Elon but have to support the guy to make their money back.
[doublepost=1563780300][/doublepost]Nah, Elon is more impressive. Steve made technology fashionable while Elon pushes it to new heights.

Well said. Every once in a while its good for some of us to take a step back from our first world discussions on here and realize that a lot of all this is just boys (and girls) with their toys.

Those who keep complaining that Apple’s modern machines are too thin would do well to have a look at this and ponder the alternative had there not been the relentless pursuit of thin & light.

Wow, $1600 price twenty years ago? That’s $2500 adjusted today - more than a 15” Macbook Pro!
Mr. Tim does really good job at keeping manufacturing costs down...

Actually, He does NOT!!
Technology devaluates with time. For many years Jobs release updates at the same price than old models.
Tim Cook Actually raises them by 20-65%, which is ridiculous.
Back then an SE30 used to cost $3500, So you can see how prices are actually going down, while technology improves exponentially and that is in All electronics.

Best £30 I spent a couple of months back. Never even use it, just sits there looking pretty.

A modern laptop can last easily for 5 to 10 years. Meanwhile cellular tech is evolving much faster. Do you want to be stuck with a laptop with 4G when everybody else is enjoying 5G? I’d rather save money by excluding the cellular modem.

Having said that, there are form factors that do serve their purpose better with a built-in cellular modem, like the Surface Pro.

maybe a modern laptop, but certainly not an apple laptop last more than 2years before keyboard fails, display fails, logic board fails.. i really cant say that i could trust my mbp would last years... meanwhile my zenbook still going well from 2012.

im sure many will use 4g while 5g is around and happy to use it for years. using the same logic you will end up buying a new phone just for 5g and send the same twitter/board message ”hey im using 5g now, awesome - my insta photos are loading.. the same speed ... but still awesome!” unless you are downloading alot, many will be happy to do their daily task even with 3g and for sure, satisfied of 4g for years from now. i would stick a simcard into my work laptop if it would be possible rather than hotspotting which im force to do now.

if we always go ”dont you have a phone...?”-route, you dont need an apple watch with a cellular plan, you dont need ipad with a cellular either. you can always use your phone.

people who are afraid using public wifi, when possible and need one, get a vpn (e.g. nordvpn, fsecure freedome etc. and select the best vpn service depending on which part of the world you are living). a vpn service costs a fraction of the benefits you get.

Like your response, should of pointed out to that person
LTE is not in every country but WiFi is.

im quite sure when you live from your house, you have a problem to find a wifi to connect but surely your phone picks up a 4G(/lte) or 3G signal. im interested in knowing which country provides wifi network rather than a mobile network.
