Compare the MacBook to the iBook, talk about everything related, screen size bezels, enjoy!

I have a 900 MHz 14" iBook G3 and I'm on a white MacBook now (I'm at Best Buy) and here's my comparison:

- I like the matte screen better but I like the 13" widescreen. More screen space with a smaller footprint.
- I like the PPC framework better than Intel because I like traditional Apple. But the MacBook certainly is faster.
- The keyboard on the MacBook is slightly better. I don't have as many typos as the G3's.
- But after owning the G3 and reading things about the MacBook, the G3 seems a lot more reliable. The only issue I had with my G3 is the logic board and I fixed that with the shim trick. The MacBook seems to have a broad range of issues.
- iBook runs cooler.
- iBook has better battery life.
- MacBook has a better case design (magnetic latch, small footprint, better hinge)

If I could afford a MacBook, I would switch. But my iBook G3 is great for me. :apple:

The only advantage the iBooks have over the MacBooks would be the GPU.

The last generation of iBooks, the mid/late 2005 model, shipped with ATI Radeon 9550 GPUs. Despite their lack of memory, they still mop the floor with the Intel GMA 950 and X3100.

It's sad that, when it comes to gaming and 3D applications, a 3 year old system can outperform a modern system with a dual core processor and 4GB of RAM just because the manufacturer chooses to shaft consumers by offering the worst of all GPUs as the only option.

^^^ I'm so glad Apple got over the translucent colored plastics.

Apple really likes differentiation between their product lines, so I guess it's possible they think a discrete GPU will "close the gap" with the MBP.

However, I think something like an 8400M GS would be nice. Most 13" notebooks have that card, and it's still not competitive with the 8600M GT.

I definitely agree with the GPU issue. Intel needs to get their act together with the next set of chipsets D:.

But, the design of the Macbook is superior in my opinion. Really, I'd just be happy with a better GPU in the Macbooks. Everything else is pretty decent.

iBook > Macbook :)

See, now, I hate this. I absolutely hate this design, and I sometimes wonder what the hell people would be thinking buying this. Sure, it's different, but I don't like it at all. That said, that's one of the few computers Apple's made that I really don't like the aesthetics of (the clamshell just doesn't appeal to me), and in terms of comparing the two computers, I don't have much say, as I own a Macbook, love every bit of it, and have never had an iBook :p

the macbook is sexy but when i used my friends ibook i think its so damn cute. but i am not crazy about the square screen, i like widescreen!

wow, yeah, thats a huge plus

despite the fact that Jobs thinks that it's the best thing since sliced bread, I really would be just as happy with a traditional adaptor. I am careful (like everyone hsould be) not to plug in my computer anywhere that has the chance of someone tripping over the cord. I do like the fact that the adaptor cord doesn't seem as prone to breakage near the end like the ibook cord was.

Owned a 12" PB that I loved.

Then owned an iBook for awhile that I thought was tacky. I hated my ibook. Liked the design but the screen was awful and it just felt cheap in general.

Since owned a 15" Macbook and now have a black macbook which I love. No going back. :)

Hah what kind of thread is this?, Mac book is better all around. The only thing i would love to macbook is the better GPU. But that just kinda fades the line between pro and regualr mac line.

I disagree! Having owned a 12" iBook and a MacBook, I think the case design is totally flawed. That's not to say I don't prefer the magnetic latch, but the little edges cause the palm rest area to crack after awhile! Yes, I'm one of the ones affected. And this was *after* having them replace the palm rest area *twice* for the yellowing case issue...

MB's rock!

I have owned the following Mac laptops: 145B, Lombard (loved the black matte, rubbery coating, bronze keyboard), G3 iBook, G4 ibook (2), Alu PB 1.5 Ghz G4, MB 2.0 white. I would rank them the following
1)MB
2)Alu PB - video card died in like 18 days, returned it for my first G4 iBook and G5 iMac. ;)
3)Lombard, G4 iBook 900mhz tie
4)G4 iBook 700 (I think)
5)G3 iBook
6)145B

IMHO, the MB has the best form factor vs. specifications. I love the keyboard, the screen etc... The G4 iBook recently died as well, and if you check the forums/web that's happening all over. It's either a bad vid card or something to do with the airport card... My wife is really bummed. She's eyeballing the MB daily. I'm waiting until the MB goes Aluminum.

The awesomeness of the Magsafe cannot be under estimated! That's how the 145B pb died. My dog came running into the room, somehow caught the cord with his leg and Whoosh! the PB went flying across the room, into the wall!:( RIP PB 145!

The iBook was good, but it was really thick, the screen is nowhere near as good as the MB. That was the first thing my wife commented on when she got it. Speaking of balance, I find the MB better balanced then the iBook, but that's just me.

Anyhow, just my .2¢ er... .5¢ worth

I do like iBooks more, hell I've been through enough of them lately anyways :p. They do what I want even though sometimes being slow. My G4 iBook was great and was plenty fast for me. Handled all my daily tasks and chores. But I do plan on buying a MacBook soon, preferably a Black one. Would like to get a little bit more processor and ram. I love and miss the wide screens and higher resolutions of my previous VAIO laptops. You can't get no more portable then a 12" ibook/powerbook IMO. I haven't yet got to play or test a MB so hopefully one day I'll swing by an Apple Store and play around a bit and possibly pick one up too.

One thing no one has mentioned is the ease of upgrading RAM on the white G3. Just lift the keyboard, get rid of your hands' static electricity, and replace it. I don't believe the MB lends itself to an amateur's RAM upgrade.

Taking out the MB battery and bracket to replace RAM isn't too much more difficult.

The first time i saw an iBook was when I had a one on one crit session with my Uni tutor. I came into her office and there it was on the desk. I had to run to the toilet to relieve myself. It was ugly.

I <3 my iBook

I have had my 14' iBook since 2005, and still love it to death. I hate the MacBooks.

Sadly, I onyl have about 3 GB left on the HDD, and the power soket is about to die. D:

I refuse to buy a MacBook. My reasons are....

AH! GLOSSY!! - I cant stand glossy screens, they get dirty from the wind.

The keyboard - Cant say that I hate it, but I can type much faster on the iBook one.

The edge - The edge of the computer, right under the trackpad is not one piece of plastic, its 2. Since they dont meet up correctly, whenever I type, my wrists hurt. It looks like I cut my self. D:

Scratches - After having my iBook for almost 4 years, I do not have a major sratch on the top cover. After using my moms MacBook over the summer, it ended up that there is a huge sratch on the cover. I treated it the same as my iBook, and probobly better. It seems they used different plastic, that isnt as scratch resistant.

Over all, it just seems like the MacBook isnt as well made as the iBook.

I plan to get a MacBook Pro over the summer. :)

Hmm. Maybe all the iBooks I've seen have just been dodgy ones then.

Couldn't wait to get rid of my iBook when I had it. Wasn't until I saw the new Macbook that I considered using anything other than my Powerbook.

I think the Macbook is an infinitely more classy, well made machine.

is this a joke?

What?

the 12" ibook and powerbook were horrid. i mean the keys were right on the edge, you could pluck them out.

You take that back. The 12" powerbook is one of the best laptops ever made.

Keys on the edge? What the heck are you talking about? What difference does it make?
