Update

I removed the jailbreak and everything worked fine. Jailbroke again and iBooks problem returned. After further investigation it seems to only happen with books I very recently downloaded from iTunes. My own PDF's and books from a few months back have no problems.

I then killed iBooks from the "task manager", reopened and after 3 - 5 attempts to open the problem books they do in fact finally open. No doubt there's a problem but with patience your books will open.

Same issue with iBooks after jailbreak

I use an iPad 3G with iOS 4.2.1 - jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.6b6. I also use an iPhone 4 jailbroken with the same method. On the iPhone 4 the books open eventually (after repeatedly dismissing the message). However on the iPad I tried about 20 times (also closed iBooks with the task switcher) and I am still not able to open the book there. Let us know if there is any fix on the horizon.

on .9.7 b6 and not opening books. Even repeat opening won't let me get int like .9.6 would. Its really annoying because I just paid $13 for a book.

Any suggestions would be great.

This was a known problem. Why did you jb using beta code?

Suggestions? Use the Kindle app, restore and remove jb, wait. Take your pick.

It was a known problem though it is not listed on twitter or on thier blog. I discovered this problem through the blog reply posts from others.

Some people have had luck installing older versions of ibooks. I was unable to make that work. I get a different error saying that required components are not installed.

I was hoping that by posting in a forum here, our discussions could further work towards providing a solution.

Went back to tethered jailbrake in which you can force the book to open eventually.

Seems like untethered jailbrake won't even let you force the book to open.

iPhone 4 4.1 with GP. I have been having the same issue for some time now. If I manually shut the phone off then turn on, it usually fixes the issue for a while.

No joy here either

Same problem. Jailbroken iPad with latest beta (untethered). As soon as I purchased full version (i.e. not free sample) of a book, the error appeared, not only in that newly purchased book, but two others as well, which were already opening just fine previously. Other books are unaffected. None of the posted fixes have worked.

I just jailbroke my iPad and iPhone on 4.2.1. I am getting this error with both in iBooks.

I've tried reinstalling iBooks from iTunes after downloading it again on iTunes. I've tried opening the book multiple times along with killing the process multiple times.

Still no dice.

Anyone try out Greenpoison to see if you can open DRM books in ibooks yet?

Does it work if you keep clicking on it or close it out?

Still stuck on untethered jailbrake right now here.

Maybe I will try it out this weekend.

The issue still exists, at least for books with DRM (ie: purchased/protected from the iBooks Store) on my iPad.

A good test book is Winnie The Pooh, as it's free to download but still has the DRM. Not all free books have DRM, so this can be a confusing experiment.
All the paid books have DRM, but not everyone wants to pay for a book just to test and see if it works (especially since all indicators are that it WON'T)

With 4.x on the iPad and any jailbreak, these books won't open. I tested this with 4.2.1 and the latest greenp0ison.

So to clarify - You are able to open NON DRM and PDF's w/out a problem - its only DRM'd content you purchased from Itunes that does not work?

Yes, and it has always been that case with iOS 4, and any jailbreak. I've never had a problem with unprotected ePubs or PDF's however. It's only purchased/protected content from the iBooks Store that poses the problem. The store lets you download/buy books... but the app won't let you open them if you're on an iOS 4 jailbreak. Samples download and display fine though.

So for now I've just decided I won't be buying any books from the iBooks Store. I'll use Kindle (Amazon) or Nook (Barnes and Noble) or Overdrive (my library, free!) instead. I'm not giving up my jailbreak over this issue. And I will load in unprotected ePUB files and whatever PDF's I like.

I sure do hope the jailbreak developers figure out how to fix this though. Lots of folks will be surprised to learn that the Books they paid in the iBooks Store are no longer accessible on their jaibroken devices.

Interesting - Glad I did not upgrade my 3.2 Ipad's since I-Books is my KILLER App. Can't imagine not being able to use this app for purchased books - also can't imagine not being jailbroken...

It's really not that much of an issue for me as the iBooks store is the most anemic of the lot. It's just too bad that iBooks has the best UI for reading.

And I agree that for iPhone users this is not worth giving up my jailbreak. It's just too useful.

Bloody DRM.

And now that I'm enjoying AirPlay (with Pandora, Slacker, and all the other audio apps) and native folders and multitasking... and SBsettings and RetinaPad and all the other great jailbreak hacks... I can't imagine not being on 4.2 on my iPad. It's just too cool.

Sucks that we have to make these choices though. It used to be that jailbreaking didn't really have such a "cost." Hopefully it'll get resolved soon.

And happily, there are other sources for eBooks in the meantime.

I tried reading with the Kindle App and even the Nook but just can't get used to it after reading many thousand(s) of pages on IBooks. I had planned to JB my VIphone but now will have to think about it...

So we are sure that this affects all JailBreaks?

All jailbreaks on iOS 4.x, yes.

Apparently on the iPhone, DRM'ed iBooks eventually open, if you try multiple times. Not so with the iPad, in my experience though. The error pops up every time.
