Another alternative to iBooks is Kobo. You can set it up to look similar to iBooks (even with the animated page turning). Not quite as pretty as the way iBooks looks, but that's what I am using now since I have kind of been forced to! LOL I tried the other 2 and didn't like them. Very primitive looking....

Yeah, I've got Kobo but haven't really explored it yet. How does it's store's selection compare to Apple/iBooks, Amazon/Kindle, Nook/B&N?

This whole situation kinda stings a bit more when you consider that Apple recently rejected the Sony eReader app... let's hope they don't do the same with any of these others

Kindle has animated page turns too, turned on by default. But it's a very rudimentary animation. Not very slick. The settings let you turn on "basic reading mode" where these get turned off.

For sure the iBook's page turning animation is the best. It's the only one that not only is variable and interactive (ie: responding to your finger precisely and in the right direction, as if you're really turning the page) but also shows the text showing (in reverse) through the back of the page. It's a very nice effect!

Kobo's page turn is variable and interactive, looks good, but the back of the pages are completely white. Subtle difference, but noticeable, if you pay attention to things like that.

One more data point...

My iPhone is running 4.1 and has been jailbroken for months. I've never had an issue with opening DRM protected books on it. However, with the most recent update to iBooks, I see the same error on my iPhone as I see on my iPad which I jailbroke last weekend with GP.

I'm in the same boat. MyiPhone 4 on 4.1 was fine until the update before the one yesterday, but at least I can try multiple times and get books to open. My wifes iPhone on 4.2.1 and iPad on 4.2.1 are worse though. I may have to start investigating what it will take to roll back to an older version of iBooks, if thats even possible.

At least comex is aware of the issue and is looking into it. http://www.jailbreakqa.com/questions/2259/greenpois0n-breaking-drm-books-in-ibooks

Fortunately, I had already read all but one of the books in iBooks, so I bought that one again at the Kindle store so I can continue reading it.

I think once 4.3 comes out, I will upgrade to 4.3 on my iPad and not jb it. The major reason I jailbroke was to BT tether to my iPhone using the iTether/TetherMe combination. However, since I am using my iPad more and more with a BT keyboard, I have to use WiFi and I don't need a jb on my iPad to do that. That will 'fix' iBooks on my iPad and switching to using Kindle on both devices will 'fix' the iPhone issue.

Actually, I never did notice this before, so I just had to check it out after reading this :) Guess what! KOBO DOES HAVE THAT EFFECT! The backside of the pages when you flip a page DO have that effect! You can see the backwards text from the previous page kinda shining through! You can notice it a lot more if you drag your finger slowly and hold the page curl so the page is half way flipped... you can easily see the effect you were talking about.

So Kobo seems to be the most similar to iBooks for looks and functionality. I do miss however, the sepia effect and the nice red bookmark on iBooks... Kobo uses an icky green! I also miss the nice wooden bookshelf. Kobo has a white metallic looking one. Just small differences. I do like the Facebook integration with Kobo though!

See link on instructions to fix ibooks

http://www.ihackintosh.com/2011/02/fix-ibooks-issue-in-ios-4-2-1-after-jailbreak-with-grenpois0n/

Have tested it on iphone 4 with 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Having just applied this "hunnypot" hotfix -- I can confirm that protected content now opens fine in iBooks on my iPad running 4.2.1, jailbroken via greenp0ison.

Just keep in mind that iBooks updates via the App Store, and not via the normal iOS updates. That means Apple can change the jailbreak protection at any time via an app update, and there are a multitude of ways of detecting a jailbreak.

As a result of this (as well as Apple's crazy shenanigans, forcing content providers to offer In-App options and hand over 30%) I have decided I will NOT be purchasing any iBooks content.

Ah, indeed it does -- not sure how I missed that. In any case, yes, Kobo's UI is pretty nice.

I have to say though, if I were to get into the habit of buying lots of eBook content, I would probably do it through Kindle. Not for interface reasons but rather accessibility. Amazon's Kindle content is readable via the Mac/PC app, the web, the iOS devices (at least for now, hopefully Apple doesn't get crazier and ban it) as well as a dedicated Kindle device, if it came to that. It just seems wiser to make any investment in the most flexible, available platform, and Kindle is that, right now for eBooks.

I also just loaded using method 2 in the instructions and worked without a hitch. Had to create the Cydia and Autoload folders but that was it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I'm still on 4.1 here but updated to the newest iBooks to check this patch. Works like a dream! Thanks @comex! I really thought I was the only one when I first started this thread, who knew it was all on Apple?

LOL - now check out how Google Books tries to do it. They have reverse text showing through the back of the page, but they forgot t fade it, it's too dark, and looks really cheesy/funny.

I am lazy and didn't want to re-JB so I fiddled around with it and, at least with the Winnie the Pooh book, I found I was able to bypass the error if I opened the book and turned the page once before the error occurred. Took a couple tries but it seems to work every time as long as I can hit the page turn before the error pops up. Not sure if it will work for everyone but it did for me. BTW I am using a 3G running 4.2.1 JB with redsn0w.

The "hunnypot" iBooks fix is so simple, just download a single file. No need to re-jailbreak.
