Alongside today's release of iOS 4, Apple has updated its iBooks application [App Store] to Version 1.1, making it a universal application offering compatibility with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. In addition to bringing the company's eBook reader to the smaller form factor of the iPhone and iPod touch for the first time, iBooks is also seeing a number of enhancements, including free over-the-air syncing of bookmarks and notes across users' devices.

iBooks also now incorporates PDF viewing, which operates very similarly to its eBook reading capabilities, as well as a new font choice of Georgia, choice of sepia or white page colors, a left-justified text option, and an increase in available font sizes.

With the update, iPhone and iPod touch users running iOS 4 now have access to the full iBooks experience, including Apple's iBookstore where users can download paid and free eBook content in the ePub format.

iBooks 1.1 and PDF support

I cant seem to get the PDF support to work on either my iPad or iPhone 3Gs. Also you must download the dictionary to the iPhone version of iBooks.

I wondered where my bought books were - until I went back to manage them with iTunes. I was then able to sync my iPad books with my 3GS. It's working great!

Accessing iBooks with iPhone 3GS

How do I access the iBooks with my iPhone 3GS ? Is there a separate app? Or does it simply allow me to access it while visiting the iTunes store?

If you have trouble getting to the updated 1.1 version of the iBooks app, try the direct link in the first message of this thread.

Thanks to the updated iBooks, the ability to put PDF files on my iPhone is probably my favorite new feature! I've already got my Canon 5D Mark II user manual on there! Now I'll have it with me wherever I go!

I'm glad to see it and I'm excited about the new features ... but why on earth are notes and bookmarks sync'ed with your iTunes account and not your MobileMe account?! This means when my wife and I are reading a book we've bought we need to be on the same page or forego page sync'ing?

Not everyone has Mobile Me but everyone with an iPhone/iPod/iPad has iTunes

still dont get why apple did this. takes one of the main features of the ipad as an ereader away.

Unfortunately my iPhone 2G can't run iOS 4 so that I can run iBooks 1.1. 🙁

Sorry, but it does annoy me.

iBooks - Winnie the Pooh

Is Winnie the Pooh only available on the iPad? Now that I have iBooks on the iPhone, only the books I've purchased show up on the iPhone, not Winnie the Pooh.....

Even though I have both the iPad and the iPhone set to sync all books in iTunes.....

Ok, I expected to not like iBooks as much as I do the Kindle app....but dammit if I'm not thoroughly impressed by iBooks. The app is just gorgeous. There's no other way to put it. If only I could transfer my Kindle books over to this...

Press the Store button from within iBooks on your phone, search for Winnie The Pooh and download it. That's how I got it to show up.

iBooks is quite slow reading books on my 3GS. There is a delay on turning pages. Much slower than Stanza.

That's what I had to do too.....

Strange that it wouldn't sync like my other books did.....

Oh well, not a big deal. I love iOS 4!
