Any way to open PDF files other than email attachments? I have some huge PDF files, some 300mb+ which are already on my ipad and emailing them doesn't make sense.

Answered my own question! In Goodreader you can "open in" and there is an option for ibooks!!!

I just downloaded a book that I had purchased on my iPad with the expectation that it would be a free download like when you re-download an app you've already purchased. I did not get the "this will be a free download because you have already purchased this item" message. I am worried that I'll be charged twice. Beware if you are trying the same...

Go to the Store, click on Purchases on the bottom. It will list all the items you've purchased based on the itunes account that is logged in. You can redownload for free from that page.

I don't think the other way charges you, though.

iBooks 1.1 pretty disappointing; PDF support sucks & no color control

I'm on a Touch 2g here. I thought the iBooks was going to support PDF highlighting and annotation. I'm not seeing any support for that on my device. Just a crappy pdf reader that doesn't even remember the zoom level from one screen to the next. This is some pretty lame coding. Goodreader is far better. Also, Stanza is way better than iBooks for epub. You can control so much more like background colors. Why would I want to read a book with white backgrounds, or beige as my only options? The glare is pretty terrible on my eyes at any rate.

What a disappointment. I was hoping that a double-click on some text would, like Safari, zoom in to have that text fill the width of the display. Instead, it zooms in way too much. Guess there's still some room for a good PDF reader app 'cause what Apple is providing here is pretty poor.

The new ibooks feature is a must. i'am finally starting to organize my pdf's and digital books in itunes everything centralized. but i open ibooks in itunes

How to left-align?

Can someone please tell me how to left justify text in the new iBooks 1.1? It says you change it in the settings, but I can't seem to find it.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Well, I think it is a bit of a let-down. I was expecting (like many of you) the ability to do annotations on pdfs, which I think is what Steve said would be available. This is in fact the "killer app" I have been looking for. iAnnotate looks pretty good, but syncing is a pain. Nevertheless, I suppose it is the one for me to buy...

It's in the Settings app, with the gear icon, not in iBooks.

A couple of thing I'd like to mention:

Synching works over 3G. Sweet. I'm not sure if it will work with the synching computer turned off, i.e. as if the synching uses a special kind of hidden notification (but pulling and pushing, not just pushing).

Margins are too damn big. Holding it in landscape makes it tolerable, but it's the top-bottom margins that need to shrink the most.

I like the sepia background- I hadn't read about that being added anywhere.

Screen brightness setting is still screwed up, like it is in the iPad. The brightness setting carries over after you leave the app, and remains till you lock the phone and unlock.

Overall, I'm very happy with the app.

Update: syncing does not require any of your computers to be running, so it apparently does work like a special kind of notification (with hidden push and pull), for lack of a better description.

I am a grad student who bought an iPad 3G when it came out and have an iPhone. I'd really like to get textbooks and PDFs (I also have a very fast scanner) on my devices to avoid the paper this Fall. I'm really trying to figure out workflow, and it sounds like you haven't either?
On my iMac and MBA, I use Sente 6: it is excellent and much better than OSX Papers, albeit a bit expensive (although graduate students are eligible for discount!).

On my iPad, however, I haven't managed the establish a good work flow. I tend to use Papers, GoodReader and iAnnotate, but I am so hoping for a Sense iPad app to hopefully allows me to sync my library across my Macs and keep to annotate features.

Help!!!

Ok so now I have todays updated ibooks 1.1 I have itunes 9.2 on mac os 10.x. I cannot see my PDFs that it had synced from Itunes Books to the Ibooks app. I went to the Ipad sync settings and selected 2 manually and it sent the two over and I could see them. But when I selected all of my PDFs it did not show all of them on the Ipad even though it synced. Suggestons? Or is Ibooks bugged?

I Can't Do Anything...

I have been unable to do anything with iBooks on my iPhone 3G. I've now been trying to download the iPad User Guide for the last 15 minutes, and the status bar hasn't moved in the last 12... I have synced PDFs to iBooks from iTunes, and I get no PDF button. I've tried deleting iBooks, unsyncing all Books and trying again, and still, nothing happens. Can anyone help?

Impressions of iBooks on a 3g.

* Book reading is a hit or miss performance vice, sometimes page turning is so slow it's unusable, at other times it is okay. But even in the best of cases can anyone call it smooth.

* Pdf reading is passable. Being used to the excellent zoom in safari, the implementation in the reader is disappointing. Page turning while zoomed in doesn't seem possible.

This was an app that I didn't think I would ever use when it was announced it would be available.

I downloaded the app and took a look at some of the books and their prices and figured $3.99-$6.99 average was not a bad price at all. I bought two books already and will definitely buy more.

Hopefully more publishers join because some of my favorite authors are not there.

not trying to start an argument, but who wants to read a book on a tiny screen? i can completely understand the idea of the book store on the ipad, but on the touch and iphone.... just doesn't seem logical to squint at a screen for hours.

The answer is: people who need or want portability.

When I got my iPod Touch a year or two ago, I found Stanza. I've since downloaded and read: Moby Dick, The Prince, 1984, Theodoric the Goth, The History of the Peloponnesian War, Saint Joan, The Time Machine, and others.

I would read here and there, sometimes at the gym before leaving, sometimes at home. I was surprised that the small screen wasn't a problem. I think the first book I read on the Touch was 1984 - I downloaded it more or less on a whim, then enjoyed reading it on the Touch. After that, I downloaded and read the others.

No squinting involved.

The most annoying misfeature of iBooks is that it phones home to Apple every time it starts. It even phones home sometimes when you wake the phone up and had iBooks open as that last App.

Here is an extract from my proxy log that proves this behavior:

I mean this is not a news reader that has to be current. I plan to mainly use iBooks on the iPhone to check some reference works in PDF format, what does that have to do with Apples iTunes Servers? Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to disable this behaviour (except by protesting to Apple). The scenario I really hate: on vacation abroad, I read an iBook and end up with excessive roaming charges just because iBook could not shut up. Bad!

PDFs not showing up? This is how I got it working…

I was a eager beaver and added all my PDFs to iTunes after 9.2 came out. They show up and open in iTunes and open if you double click them.

Today I upgraded to iBooks 1.1 (stupid name, Apple already had the iBook so this can be confusing). But despite all my PDFs showing up in the "books" tab of my iPad and iPhone they didn't show up in iBooks when I ran it on my devices. The storage graph shows that they're obviously being copied, but the Books/PDFs switch didn't show up.

I then added another PDF and did the sync again and it alone showed up.

I then removed all my PDF books and then re-added them and resynced and now I've got all my books.

Seems it was a bad idea to add my PDFs to iTunes before the iOS4 upgrade and iBooks 1.1 was installed.

This should work for those of you who are stuck.

Cheers,

3G Performance - Get Real

I'm somewhat surprised by the criticism of the performance of iOS 4 on a 3G. It is, after all, an entire generation old...and the OS is clearly built for the much faster hardware the new iPhone brings.

This isn't different from the requirements and advancement of any other OS, mobile or desktop, over the span of a few years. Just be cause Apple is advancing their software faster than your cell contract is....it's not Apple's fault.

While I'd like multitasking on my 3g, I get why it's not possible....and am happy with the features I do get.

Ps. I could give a rats a$$ about wallpaper.

With all the fancy log stuff it looks like iTunes is simply checking to see if any of your books or the app are in sync with iTunes .

The iTunes ecosystem is tightly integrated with the libraries on your iDevice. I'm sure you would see similar logs with Pandora or other user-data driven apps.

What happens if you turn off the radio's?
In other words, what happens if it can't contact Apple?

I have other complaints about iBooks and PDF's

Other programs allow locking of scrolling, both horizontal and vertical, iBooks does not.
Font size changing would be good.
PDF Reader works best for me.
