So there's PDF support in iBooks now, which is a welcome change for me since I read a lot of PDFs. However, it cannot download PDFs from Safari, which is a major drawback for me. And why did Apple chose not to use this stunning page turning effect in the same app? All in all, I can't say that it delivers a great reading experience. I'm glad I bought Folio Case after all, because this makes it worth the price tag. Also, importing PDFs via iTunes is way faster in Folio Case because it doesn't require a full sync for every file I'm copying. This saves me a few minutes every time I do it. It supports Safari, it has the page turning effect and according to Twitter, it will soon include Dropbox support.

how do you get the free books from project guttenberg? or are there any free books in the ibooks store?

I join those seeking a good workflow for making notes while reading a PDF. iAnnotate doesn't quite fit my needs...all I really want is an Evernote window open alongside the PDF.

Failing that, iOS 4 with multitasking can't come to the iPad soon enough.

By the way, it's kinda strange that iBooks will accept PDFs from other applications (eg, Dropbox), but still not epubs, even though you can sync arbitrary epubs through iTunes. Hope they change that.

answers to a few questions...

Putting PDFs on the device: No need to use mail.
Turn on Sync Books in iTunes.
Drag PDFs to ~/Music/iTunes Music/Books on your Mac.
Sync iPod. Presto, they appear.
(Similar with Photos, but they must be in a folder under ~/Pictures and you must select that folder to be synced.) (They have to be copies, too, aliases or symlinks won't work.)
Gutenberg files are plain text so they won't work. You could use Notebooks or some similar app.

As to performance: On the iPod Touch 2G, it's horrible. Unusable. Opening a 55-page PDF takes about 5 minutes to see the first page. Might be OK for 2-page hamfest flyers. Newer devices have faster CPUs, so maybe they'd be a little better?
