The "missing" icon in the iPhone commercials is really iChat.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, there are 5 missing icons not 1, open your eyes. One won't be iChat, one will be games for sure, and/or one will be a widget manager... and the others will be left open for next year when they add a coverflow file browser after leopard is released and they have an sdk and alow users to actually save files and use it like the "OSX" they're advertising it as.

That way the competition could not get a head start on the within screen camera if it's not preannounced.

Acording to your post you say apple has a patent on that soo unless you want a phone the size of "Surfaces" nobody could copy such a technique. The camera is not in the home button either. The technology isn't there, those new flat panel SED TVs that cost like $30000 use a similar manufacturing process(i would think, well maybe not), I just don't see it happening either way (surface cam or home button).

Have you looked at the specs for iChat video? 100Kbps up/down, that'd be hard to maintain (maybe on 3G which my city doesn't have anyway). They aren't going to put a wifi only app on the phone.

Can you imagine the laws that would need to be passed if video conferencing while driving was possible?? I'm already breaking the law by watching local tv stations in the front seat while talking on a cell.

I will personally host the web "iChat" if everyone would like. I don't have lots of development time right now otherwise I would customize it. Would somebody here like to work on customizing the interface, and adjusting the CSS?

I have a hosting company, So I'll put it up for hosting. Any ideas on domain name? Most of iPhone*****.com are taken.

Find a domain name, and I'll buy it, and host the app starting tomorrow for everyone.

Oh, maybe they'll offer a leather case....

That's actually a really good idea. I can't picture one of those without some sort of protection. I use a Sock™ for my 5.0 Gen iPod, and it's worked great.

Edit: Not that I'm saying it would be easily scratched. I just like to keep my nice things protected.

Okay I just purchased: iPhoneandChat.com

As of tomorrow (when the domain starts working) I will be hosting this iChat application for all to use without a time limit.

If anyone wants to contribute, work on the HTML, design new buttons, or has ideas let me know. Lets make this the MacRumors project! I've contacted the author to let him know, and as he updates his code I'll update the site.

So on launch day we will have iChat! I will also start writing the code for jabber, yahoo, and MSN

Thanks All!

We demand Skype on iPhone

We demand Skype on iPhone. The carriers may protest but as consumers, we ought to get what we want. We wouldn't be skyping around on the streets anyway unless we happen to work in or next to a WiFi-enabled Apple Store.

I agree - that sounds absolutely absurd.

I dunno about it being so absurd... This was hashed out a week ago or so in the forum discussion surrounding the AT&T training manual...

I didn't hear anything in that thread that suggested this WASN'T a distinct possibility. Why wouldn't they do that?? Gotta think the R&D on that little camera has been done and paid for at this point, and they already sell zillions of them, so its not such a reach...

Soon we will have video phones rather than this lame voice communication we have now. Doesnt seem practical in most situations where a person is consistently on the go, in a car, etc...but the ability to do these sort of things (especially with that sweet apple patent) seems to bridge the gap of communication even further!

"10 minute chat limit"

Lord, here we go. Real applications my ass.

Duh, it's a demo. It's a proof of concept that shows what you can do with an iPhone via Safari, not a free web frontend for AIM. Why would they want to expend server resources on this before anyone actually has an iPhone?

Plus, the source is available. Remove the time limit and put it on your own server, if you want to use AIM through Safari just for kicks.

We've had 3G video phones over here in the UK for years. Does anyone ever actually make video calls on them? Erm, no.

not only would you have the Internet in your pocket... but all your friends would be there too (a scary thought, actually).

Apple would have to develop an elegant solution to prohibit motorists from using the video chat feature. Since it's a cheap shot to identify a problem without proposing a solution, maybe this: the video chat function doesn't work if the camera on the back senses a circular (i.e., steering wheel) shape.

yes, some lobotomized drivers would try taping a square piece of cardboard over the steering wheel to sneak through the system. but that's just proof of why there'd need to be something to curb (!) idiot drivers.

see!

I sure am glad you're on the road where i drive, and where my kids drive. Thanks for caring about the rest of us. Gives me a good feeling to know you're out there. (seriously, if you know the behavior's wrong, and it sounds like you do, you CAN just stop it. yeah, you're giving up something you want, but you get the gratification of doing what's right, and maybe some pride in your restraint. Try it and see). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:NRJUSTSAYNORALLY.jpg :)

I'm old enough to remember when the first color-screen laptops came out. Using one at an airport gate would quickly draw a crowd of awed/envious observers. I can imagine an iPhone with video chat feature doing the same. Talk about viral marketing...

(nevertheless, i'll be surprised, albeit pleasantly, if such a feature makes it into the product)

For those who say the idea of a camera hidden in the Home button is absurd, please don't, then, speculate that there might be a new screen with a thousand hidden cameras in it. If the user-facing camera function were to be implemented, trust me, it would be in the simplest possible way.

i assume there will be a way to code it to have the iPhone vibrate or ring or whatever when you get a new message?

haha exactly! I have had my 3G service for 2 years and have 75 mins free video call every month ... and I think I have used 30 mins (or less) ever since I have 3G...

as for the video calling the rest of the world has, sure nobody uses 75 minutes of it. But it's nice to have that one time a hot girl wants to chat after you've left the pub ;)

There are plenty of other webaim apps out there that let you talk much more than 10 minutes.

Lame.
