I think they had enough on their hands overhauling iOS that they weren't going to do too much with OS X besides remedy some of the more egregious stuff like the leather in Calendar. Considering they're on 10.9 and the next version is going to most likely kick into 11 if the numbering trend continues, they're likely saving the overhaul for that. What's nice about this is that it gives them some time to see what works in iOS 7 and what doesn't and then next year, present a refined iOS 8 and a Mac OS 11 that builds off of the refinements.

I don't think we'll see as dramatic of a change as some expect though, as much of what is unique about iOS 7 stems from the fact that it's a device you hold in your hands. The Parallax effect is going to lack a certain punch on an iMac, for instance. We'll see style overlap, no doubt, but I don't think they were joking when they said that they recognize that Macs and iOS are different.

In any event, I have to say I like the new iCloud quite a bit. I still am not a huge fan of some of the design changes of iOS 7 on the iPad and Mavericks (Address Book and Calendar look too sparse to me), but for whatever reason, on the website, I like them a lot.

It will be nice once iOS, OS X and applications are unified design wise. Those iWork icons look like an eye sore next to the iOS 7 style icons. I'm sure it will happen over time. I wonder if we'll see new designs for find my friend and iTunes U when iOS 7 goes live.

I have been wondering about iTunes U myself. I think it is the one place where the skuemorphism (sp) works. A notebook for your class. It's nice.

As for the iOS 7 icons (and the theme in general) it has really grown on me and I really like it. The one icon I would change is the one for reminders. Those colored dots on the side don't look like they are aligned correctly.:(

Really? I think you need to re-think your position. Apple stock is off around $200 from it's high. Think about it this way - every share you have now lost $200 of value from the high. There is a reason for that and it's because the perception is that there is a problem at Apple. Real or not, that is the perception and when you're selling a premium product perception is everything.

You also have to make people desire your product. Make them want to plunk down $$$ over that free or cheap Android phone. You can point to the ecosystem, the apps, etc. but at the end of the day if the consumer is turned off by what they see they will go to your competitor. Make people (and the buzz) that iOS 7 is not good, ugly, whatever and people won't buy it. Look at Windows 8 - most are turned off by it and sales are in the crapper. Apple releases one like that and it's game over.

Apple has to tell why it's a premium product and make people lust after it. The same way Nike makes people lust after $200 Air Jordans, $200 Air Maxes, Coach has it's purse people, Louis Vitton gets $300+ for a pair of flip flops, etc. Make something that people look at and go huh? will kill a luxury brand faster than you can say kill.

That's what Apple is up against here - their part of the smartphone pie is slipping ever so slightly but where there is slipping it starts a free fall to the bottom. Look at Microsoft for how it starts. That needs to not happen to Apple.

Which is why Apple still tops the charts in sales, satisfaction, and revenue. Not only that but they are the majority of tablets sold.

Look outside of the tech community (who seem to fawn over Google's every move) - people *want* Apple. You can't say that about Android, who they just get because it's cheap, without knowing anything about it.

Yeah, I think they'll be fine.

The only people who love the flat design as bloggers and designers who love the Swiss design school.

Sorry, but regular people and UI usability experts think that iOS 7 is a disaster from an appearance and usability perspective.

Problems with iOS 7:
1. Helvetica Light - too thin.
2. Light grey text on a white background.
3. Too much removal of texture and other references to real world objects removed destroys context.
4. Flat design blurs delineation between background causing usability issues for new users and regular non-geeks.

Wish they gave OS X this makeover... Kinda weird going back and fourth between skeuomorphic and non-skeuomorphic design.

I don't personally understand the need for these web apps. Presumably, I have my iDevice with me at all times. Why would I need to use the web version?

It's much easier to type a long email on a computer, and I can do it from any computer I want. You may have your iDevice with you all the time but it's not good when you can't get a signal or it's dead. You don't need it? Fine, then don't use it.

I'd welcome it. The two systems should mirror each other for the ease of the user experience. Whether a person likes the new look or not is another matter :)

Exactly, even though I'm not really a fan of the design, this NEEDS to come to OS X. This is where technology is heading.

True.

You could "Move to folder" Trash, I guess...

Is there maybe a preference to change archive to delete? That would probably change the filing cabinet into a trash can. Just speculating. I don't have access to the beta.

Any of you idiots complaining actually log in and toy with it a little bit?
It's nice and fluid. Love it.

The ONE thing they can do is tweak the icons, but I have had the iOS 7 beta since day 1, and trust me, it doesn't really matter what the hell the icons looks like. I mean who cares?? iOS7 is definetly a better OS to use..

I wish they would change the animation of opening apps in iCloud. It should match iOS' animation and zoom into the icon.

Yeah, I think they'll be fine.

In the USA sales are fine. Samsung is slowly gaining though. In satisfaction, I believe Samsung edged Apple out this year in the ACSI scores.

And I've had people (my wife) ask about and look at the Galaxy when looking for their iPhone this year. That didnt happen before and they are non techies.

Yes, Apple may well be fine. But they better step up their game. I say this as an iMac, iPad, and iPhone user as well as an Apple stockholder. So yes, I've got skin in the game.

Do you remember the interface that was so beautiful that you'd want to lick it?

At the time, everyone and their brother thought of it as "trendy, and to be change-for-the-sake-of-change"... but Apple refined it over the years. I'm pretty sure we're in the same position now.
No, we are not in the same position. Apple is in the same position. I have alternatives, iOS 6 and Android. The beauty and the beast. If all my choices are old and beautiful or new and ugly, I could stop updating or switch to Android. Which is at least ugly and inexpensive. There is no reason for me to opt for ugly and expensive iOS 7. Apple can notify me in 10 years, when they have refined it to something watchable. Assuming of course they still exist.

I think they have to change it for consistency sake. At least get rid of the awful wood grain everywhere.

anything is better than the clunky, rounded, 3D, 2006-inspired current incarnation of icloud.com.

but also LOL. what a lazy and uninteresting interface. I'm getting bored just looking at it. I'm SO bored.

must be contagious...now you bore me.

I have to use icloud.com at work on a daily basis and this is wonderful. I know some people don't like the "flatness" of it, but the other benefit is speed. While the old stuff looked nice, they didn't function very well, this already functions better then the old site.

Looks better ... but I still hate the layout of the homepage.

Wow, I had a lot of trepidation about bringing ios7 style to osx but if that's how it would look, I might not have a problem... Very relaxing compared to what we have now... I'm really tired of the dull-dark-gray osx interface we have now...

I know taste is purely subjective and there are plenty of people who think that the new look for iOS 7 is hideous. I just know that for myself, I have always thought that each new OS (i and Mac) was so subtly different from the previous that I didn't notice how ugly the old one was until looking at it months after using the newest one.

I wonder with this drastic change from iOS 6 to 7 if I will feel like the old is hideous if I go to use it several months from the release of iOS 7. I have a feeling I will just feel like it is different. Not better, not worse... just different. And to be honest, that is not what I have come to expect from Apple. I want to be convinced that this experience is totally better than the previous experience, not just different. I guess only time will tell. Just my 2¢ and MHO.
