Do you do that with iCloud Drive for the Mac? I don't... I just launch the file and it finds Pages all by itself.

I was basically hoping that Readdle's Documents app for iOS would do something similar. So much for that. iCloud Drive for iOS is asinine. A Dropbox killer. LOL!

On the iMac I launch Pages and then open my file.

What if the file wasn't for Pages, but a photo. Then how the fsck do you get to it? I don't understand iCloud drive in iOS!??!

Same thing I just posted above? Using the Documents app, you can open up pretty much any file.

Is Documents 5 working properly for you? It will do as you say above, but if I put a file in the "Documents by Readdle" folder on my MBP it does not appear in the the Cloud page of Documents on the iPhone, nor the other way round......although it does appear in iCloud.com and the Documents 5 folder in the Document Picker window.

Also Documents 5 will not open Pages and Numbers files...have to invoke "open with" and chose Pages or Numbers. Support say a known bug.

I have no issues with it syncing between any of my devices. iPhone, iPad and iMac.

Thanks. It may be that I am not clear what is supposed to happen. Can you answer this for me?

When you open Documents 5 app there are a row of icons along the bottom of the screen. One of these is a cloud icon. If you click on it, the screen shows the files you have moved to the cloud. In the same window if you click on the words "iCloud Drive" at the top, it opens the Document Picker screen, which shows the Documents folder. If you select this, are the contents the same as the ones in the previous screen?

In my case the contents of the Document Picker "Documents" are the same as Documents by Readdle on my MBP and iCloud.com, but not the same as the screen seen when clicking on the cloud icon on the bottom row. This is on two iPhones.
