Initially I wasn't even allowed to add the email let alone get to the verify stage. I've since removed the email which contained the custom domain I'd like to add to iCloud from Apple's "Reachable at" contact list through "Manage Apple ID". Partial success!

I can now add the email and send the verification email but clicking "Verify" prompts...

Couldn’t verify your email

There was a problem verifying your email address. Try again later.

Anyone have any ideas?

*Not sure if it matters but the email domain I'd like to transfer is currently through G-Suit.

Look at the screenshots I posted earlier.
Thanks for this! I look at both places in my beta iCloud Mail account but I don’t see my custom domain nowhere, despite being successfully added in my iCloud settings. I wonder if it doesn’t work because it’s a beta, or it doesn’t work because something in my DNS records isn’t registered properly. I receive emails but have nowhere to send it on beta iCoud.

So it's listed in the custom domain menu (where you set it up?) but that's it? Try a force refresh of the Website.

I set it up yesterday on beta.icloud.com. I don’t get any error message in settings in iCloud, even after a force refresh. I don’t see my custom domain email in iCloud mail options

digged a bit deeper

created another email of the domain.com which gives an user does not exist
Remote-MTA: dns; mx01.mail.icloud.com
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.1.1 <webmaster@domain.com>: user does not exists

My family members have there domain.com emails linked to their apple-ids as "reachable under" mails - something I can't do with the new one as no confirmation mail arrives

I have the same issue and I've posted a couple of times in this thread. I get that error message if the email address I'm adding in step 2 is the same as my Apple ID. I get a different error message that says "There was a problem adding this email address. Try again later" if the email address is not the same as my Apple ID. I've also tried skipping step 2 and finishing the domain setup and then adding the email address. Still get an error. I reported the bug at https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/. Hopefully, the more people that report the same issue will get it fixed quicker.

This was extremely helpful, thank you so much. One final question: now that I am up and running thanks to your settings, how does one choose which domain (custom or default) the emails send from? Also, it seems like all emails filter into a single inbox. Is there any way to have one inbox for my default email, and one for the custom domain? Or to choose on the fly which domain I wish to send from?

Thanks again!
That’s all managed easiest from your iCloud Mail settings. Go to https://beta.icloud.com/mail/ and click the cogwheel to enter settings. Under Write you’ll see which email you wish to chose to send from. You can also select send from address each time you send an email. Note that this seems to be bugged a bit on iOS and iPadOS.

As for filtering, back to the same settings page on https://beta.icloud.com/mail/ and go down to rules. There you can create sorting rules based on which address it’s sent to.

I have been waiting for this feature to appear and jumped right on it. I used to have my email on Gmail or GSuite or whatever they call it and now have it on iCloud. I am a seasoned IT guy so I had no issues setting this up. It can be a bit daunting for less technical people, but I am sure there will be tons of Videos on Youtube about this after it launched fully. So far I have zero complaints and it works as it should.

Is this confirmed to be true? Would have loved to have my custom domain for my Apple ID as well so that there is no need to use @icloud anymore.
You’d only use it as your Apple ID, not in any way as an email address. But I agree with you, I’d rather use my custom domain as well, but at least for now, this how it works.

Amazing, thanks so much for the detailed reply! Really appreciate it.
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how do you actually create the email address? iCloud asks to send a confirmation email to myname@myurl.com but if I do it as per your instructions the email won't exist?
You can skip that step (and honestly should as it seems a bit bugged atm), and then create it afterwards. Once your domain is setup properly, just go to the same page on https://beta.icloud.com/settings/ and you can add up to three email addresses per domain.

Oh. I'm a pretty casual email user so I guess this doesn't apply to me. I definitely don't understand this at all so forgive this question if it's dumb, but what is the problem this is solving?
It's for people who registered their own domain names and want somebody to handle the email server for them. For instance I have a domain name with my last name dot us. While I could run my own email server it's just not worth the hassle for me.

The domain I‘ve chosen for the test was an old one with the email accounts of wife and son on it too. together with my own old mails. I share my iCloud+ with them and relalized checking the accounts that the mails sent to the old domain suddenly ended up in their iCloud accounts.
They even can’t access the email-domain in their beta iCloud page…
So these were all email addresses that forwarded to the Apple ID email correct?

If anyone finds a good how-to video (esp for Google Workplace email), please post. I keep getting stuck at the verification stage.

My Apple ID has always been my custom email address. I migrated it to iCloud a couple of days ago without a problem.

Re-upping this to see if anyone knows the answer?
You would need to add both domains to your iCloud account and then create a rule in the mail settings in the iCloud web interface to forward all emails from the one address to the other address.
