It's been two days now. I created a new user name "test123" and it populated on all devices. Then I deleted it and it disappeared as expected. Then I added it again and it will not show anywhere except on my MacMail which is not on beta.
I can remove and add after changing MX servers for a moment back to the original domains MX, confirming the addition of the email form the apple email domain setup - after changing back to iCloud MX they appear on all mail.
but being able to receive seems to be on apples side - it works/ed for a few hours and the ended up in the „hop“ error again …

It is reasonably easy to simulate on a Mac though.

Create a new iCloud mailbox, call it Second Inbox. Add it to Favorites. Create sub-mailboxes under Second Inbox, call them Account 1 and Account 2. Remove iCloud inbox from Favorites and move Second Inbox to its place at the top of the list. Create Rules that filter all email from your iCloud account into Account 1 and from your custom domain into Account 2.

Create a rule called Split Account 1. Any email that ends with @iCloud.com move to Account 1.
Create a rule called Split Account 2. Any email that ends with @mycustomdomain.com move to Account 2.

Done. I'd have to look to see if the rules in mail.iCloud.com are as flexible as Mac Mail. If they are then move the rules to the cloud version of iCloud Mail.
Your premise is wrong from the very start. You can not create a second mailbox. What you mean is create a new folder in your current mailbox. That is not the same thing as having a separate mailbox, even if you can create rules for it server side.

Sure. I do similar in my mailbox
Again, that is not a second mailbox. You’re creating a folder in your current mailbox to simulate a second mailbox but it’s not the same thing as an actual second mailbox.

I don't understand why people can't get this through their heads!

My custom domain email is added to iCloud since Thursday, I still can’t send email from that account on iCloud Mail beta nor my iOS 15 beta devices. I can receive them without issue. I’ve read the thread and tried all the solutions. Are there other people in a similar situation?

Similar situation here, setup my domain on Thursday, receive is working fine. On beta.icloud.com and iPad (OS 15) I can’t send from any domain address, still. On iPhone (OS 15) I can send from both of the emails I created. On Mac Mail (Big Sur) I can send from one. I’ve tried rebooting, refreshing, etc to no avail.

I was able to set up iCloud in the Mail apps as a new imap account and then manually add the new domain addresses.

iCloud seems to know about authorized addresses for sending, even though they don't show up in the native iCloud account setup.

Eventually all the new addresses showed up via the native iCloud account (after a couple days and reboots of each device).

But in the interim, generic imap setup worked.

I used these settings (and then, as I said, then added the addresses manually):

Having all the email addresses funnel into one inbox sorta sucks, filtering is sort of a hack workaround… and doing that in reverse for sent emails doesn’t seem elegant. Sighhhh

So, it's literally impossible to use addresses that are registered as Apple IDs. Say if you used a company email for your developer account or ABM account, the custom email address will already be "claimed" by another Apple ID. Absolutely useless.

Will this create separate iCloud inboxes?

EDIt: apparently not. Huge disappointment. I don’t want to mess with rules for this.

I know a lot of people have found this, but I have an Apple ID name@mydomain.com and have managed to link mydomain.com to this account just by following the instructions - in fact once I'd set the DNS entries, I didn't even have to add the name@mydomain.com email address in the setup process on beta.icloud.com as it was already listed there.

Everything worked fine, I was receiving emails sent to name@mydomain.com and emails were showing as sent from that domain. Unfortunately I've had to temporarily disable it as my wife uses wifesname@mydomain.com and the family sharing function doesn't seem to be working yet: trying to set up the custom email alias on her beta.icloud.com on her account throws up a "There was a problem with loading your domains. Please try again later." error

Is having all custom domain emails merge into 1 mailbox bugging anyone else?

I get why people might want this, but these are aliases, so by definition they resolve to the same mailbox. Rules are absolutely the proper way to work with this (and not a hack/workaround), but you'd want to set those on icloud.com (where they're a lot more limited) rather than on Mail.app if you have more than one device.

I can send just from iPhone iOS 14.7.1. I can't send using Macbook M1 Big Sur or iPad iOS 15 beta.

Exactly this. I have done the same. Apple ID which has been using the same email I have linked into iCloud Mail.

I‘ve experienced exactly same … at least up until this afternoon where the deleted/re-added custom email address suddenly also started reappearing on my iOS 15 beta devices again. This means that I’m now able to send emails from this particular address using Mail.app on all my devices (iOS 14 and iOS 15 beta) … the only odd exception is beta.icloud.com where it’s still not available to use in Mail.

you mean the CNAME and MX servers?
Yeah, sorry I meant the DNS records - have spent the last 2 days sorting out unrelated nameserver problems so I'm on autotype :)

OP corrected.

Interesting - I now have my custom domains appearing and disappearing across all devices. The addresses work to receive mail regardless, but I am still not showing them 100% of the time on all devices.

Interesting…maybe I will skip the part about adding existing addresses then…

At least it seems like it's a limitation right now...it even doesn't let me add an email address that I have used for an Apple ID that I deleted ages ago. Seems like this deleted ID is still "stuck" somewhere in Apple's systems :-/.

Too bad. I wonder if they're gonna fix that or if that's a behavior by design.

Also experiencing the same error when trying to add my wife’s email address at beta.icloud.com.
