Well I agree it's pretty annoying and Apple should not implement it this way. It feels very Microsoft-like of the 90s. But how I solved it is to just delete all my photos from the iCloud and switch off the photo sync. If you keep the sync on it'll start to annoy you again cause every ****in photo you ever saved ends up there.

But with that workaround, you can use all other features of iCloud except the photos with 5GB...

I just don’t get the motivation behind saving .80 pence. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I mean, seriously?!

This. iCloud photos are good. If you don’t mind Google get google photos and let it sync your pics.
Google data mines enjoy people turning over information to them. After all, it’s free.

I think the OP needs to stop complaining and either pay for the next storage level, or stop running the free storage size so close to the limit, which prompts the notice.

Go to settings / your Apple ID at the top / iCloud / iCloud Backup and turn that off. You'll device will no longer back up to iCloud and keep asking you to buy more storage.
OHH so to fix it we have to completely remove the "FREE" space we get? Ohhhh okay. I can't wait to hear the excuse from these Apple obsessed fanatics as to why this is a great idea by Apple.

If you are getting the message then your backups are not working anyway so turning it off is a net gain for you (and us).

You have 5gb free, figure out how to to make stuff fit or buy more, usually you can do your backups or your photos but not both.

Perhaps asking the community, in a sensible manner, for a solution to your problem would have been a more constructive approach than your obviously inflammatory post.

But then what would they have to complain about?

Me personally, I just went for the $2.99 plan for both myself and my long suffering wife. And we're still only 91.8GB into the 200GB plan after 2.5 years of joint use.

thats only for 50gb, with the way icloud works once the base of iphones becomes 128gb or more, that 80p will turn into 2.99 real soon.
Only if you're using it for a lot of personal data (photos, unique app data, etc).

Our household has a lot of high capacity iOS devices but since majority of storage used on those is re-downloadable content (iTunes, Amazon and Netflix video downloads, Comixology, apps, etc), we're more than okay with sharing the $2.99 200GB family plan on iCloud (cheaper and more flexible than getting 4x $0.99 50GB iCloud plans for everyone).

Money well spent for frequent off-site automatic backups.

let me guess...they are giving me the option to turn it off by not using it AT ALL even though we get free space? OKAY!

I didn't upgrade my iPhone for 4 years because I hate what Apple has become. Now that i finally gave in...I am annoyed by stupid **** like this every day. First he FORCED us to have u2's album...now he is forcing people to upgrade to avoid a POP UP AD?!?!??! WTF is this bs.
It's really weird to go on the offensive and attack/talk down to the very people you are asking to help you.

I’m on 227 GB out of my 2TB plan. I couldn’t squeeze down to 200GB because I’m always taking new pictures and videos. I also use iCloud storage on my mac and to back up my various devices. I’d rather have more than not have enough.

isn't what most ppl use icloud for personal data? ie photos?

That was the point. Storage on device doesn't necessarily mean you need an iCloud plan to match.

You can have a 512GB iPhone or even 1TB iPad and still be perfectly fine with a 50GB iCloud plan if you just want the extra local device storage for, say, all Disney, Pixar and MCU movies, or a bunch of large gaming apps or your entire music collection.

On the flip side, you can have a 32 or 64GB iPhone and need a much larger iCloud plan if you take a ton of photos and videos that you want to offload/sync to iCloud.

thats one aspect of users case, for me its mainly photos, im 119gb of local storage and 184gb icloud. since apple doesn't allow you to pick and choose which to upload. anyone have more than 50gb would have to choose the 200gb tier.

iCloud is not supposed to be used as a separate online storage though. The whole point is seamless syncing across devices. The online backup bit is just how it seems if people aren’t using any other Apple devices except the iPhone.

Iirc, wasn't iCloud initially for backup, contacts and Safari sync? There was Photo Stream (which didn't use iCloud storage) but that only synced your latest pics. The camera roll was still part of the device backup in iCloud.

iCloud Photos didn't come until later, I believe. iCloud Drive was even later.

Yep it’s named the same but the function and infrastructure behind the entire system has changed now. The backup stuff is just an added feature whereas Apple has continued to expand on their cloud based platform.

I've been paying for the $.99 upgrade since time began. When my wife and I started using iCloud Photos for our photo storage on the family plan, we quickly went to the 200GB plan. Wasn't very long after that when we upgraded to the $9.99 2TB plan. Now my wife's mother is on our plan too!

Let's be honest here... I spend more on a tip going out to eat (paying for 3 of us) than I do on iCloud storage that handles our iMessages, iCloud Drive data, iCloud Photo Data, and iPhone backup data. Sure, I could save $9.99/mo and use iMazing / iTunes to backup my phones but my time is worth a lot more than that.

These complaint threads are always fun because most people are absolutely astounded ... because most people.... Maybe I should stop here.

The problem: a user's free iCloud account is now full

Possible solutions:

1) Delete some files from the iCloud account to free up space,

2) Pay for more storage on iCloud account, or

3) Whine and bitch on Macrumors about it and look for sympathy.

Exactly this, I mean we can all find something with Apple we don't like but iCloud, too useful and valuable. I am the same, family of 5, everyone uses the family sharing, think we are at 120GB, that is a lot of files easily restored if something goes wrong or we change a phone.

I get that some people don't like this or other subscriptions but some are more important than others.

OR

4) Don't shove an ADVERTISEMENT on my phone. Why is that NOT an okay option? You lease a car with 7,500 miles a year...do you get a POP UP NOTIFICATION 25x a day about 10,000 miles a year? No. Didn't think so.

Funny how this ADVERTISEMENT didn't exist previously and you guys were okay with it.
