I don't think this is possible with the average skills of an iPhone developer. John Carmack is a rocket scientist (not joking) and invented several groundbreaking methods in game history.
If this is true he's overdone himself yet again

Yes, but what this means is that developers can license the engine and use it to make graphically superior games.

Yawn. Boring. Who really cares about this. I can't believe that FPS of some game is page 1 material. Belongs over at Touch Arcade, not MR.

True, didn't think about that.

I spent two full weeks last month working on this," he said.

Well, he can't be human. I'd be happy if this was my lifetime achievement ;)

Think about the Sega Dreamcast at the end of its life. The Ferrari 356 Challenge game ran 60 FPS and looked AWESOME. The PS2, at the end of its life (yes, technically it's still alive) has some games that rival some of the low-end PS3 games.

It's all about optimization and utilization of the hardware you have. It's obvious to me that John Carmack is a programming god. If he can get anywhere near this level of performance on the finished game, Rage will become the defacto game on the iPhone and iPad.

Macrumors + gaming threads = funny posts.

The human eye can see at about 30fps. lol @ u.

Can an iPhone 4 play Crysis? lol @ u.

Seriously people, it's going to be 5 + years before we can reach PS3/X360 quality graphics on an iPhone.

Great "tech" demo. As someone else pointed out, tech demos don't really mean anything. They are to show off the "future" of gaming on a specific platform. Eventually it may look like that, but add in AI and bye bye framerate.

You guys are retarded.

Anything above 60FPS is not needed. Then you're just gloating that you have the rig that can pull 120FPS.

And plus, they're computer games, they don't mean anything.

porlbme?

Actually, 120 fps is fairly important. The most important number when it comes to framerates, something many people forget, is the minimum fps. You can be pulling 80fps, but if your minimum drops below 60, or even 50, you WILL notice a visual difference. Having 120 fps will assure you that even if you drop frames, you will maintain a high enough rate that your eye won't be able to tell the difference.

How are they doing this? We can't even get Spawn Illuminati to run at the iPhone 4's resolution without it slowing to the point of unusablilty..

Size of the screen... plus, remember, these guys did some pretty awesome things with the original Wolfenstien back on 16mhz CPU's. The iPhone is a like a super computer compared to where these guys started.

Truly cool either way!

Because John Carmack knows what he's doing.

The dude is full of badassery.

Now that I watched the video, I'm completely stunned. The video itself was particularly laggy, but I assume it's not the same real-life. The graphics though are just, wow. I instantly thought about Bioshock after witnessing this. I believe having a Bioshock port with graphics as such would just be too orgasmic on epic proportions that our minds would instantly be blown out.

I think you're confusing MHZ with FPS..... Even IMax Movies are only at about 70 FPS and most movies run at 32 FPS. So, 60 is pretty impressive from what I know... but I'm not an expert on modern game tech so I might be off too.

I love all of you backseat scientists who read something on the net and take it for science.

The average person has a hard time distinguishing things over 30 fps, it doesn't mean they CAN'T. In many tests, some people were able to distiguish up to 120 (and that doesn't mean the limit for any particular person is over 120, there are always exceptions).

The reality though is that 30fps is a target because below that, artifacts and stuttering does become evident. Because the way scenes are rendered and scenes are generally not equivalent in complexity, the goal is to continue to achieve some level above 30fps so that when dips occur because of a complex rendering, you aren't thrust below the threshold for any noticable amount of time.

Excellent point.

If this engine really comes to the iPhone, I can see it spurring a new level of gaming.

Which reminds me, whatever happened to the Unreal Engine showcase last year?

Very cool—and I guess it makes sense: Id alleged that the original iPhone was vaguely comparable to a an original Xbox or PS2 (which is to say, not the same, but faster specs in some ways, worse in others). And now we’re 2 or 3 generations later. (I know the 3G wasn’t a big step from the original.)

The 3G was NO STEP past the the iPhone 1 in terms of graphical performance since they used the identical GPU and CPU.

Chant it with me:

Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!
Rage on iPad!

Yes, naysayers, Carmack making Rage run on an iPhone at 60fps is big. It means that a tiny box can run awesome leading-edge games. The opportunity for a big leap is there, as the "mere" tech demo shows - now it's up to others to map that technology to awesome, previously unimaginable & unrealistic, applications. OK, so Rage the game is a game ... what can YOU do with an extreme-detail smooth-surface infinite-texture super-fast 3D graphics engine?

John Carmack just put a bunch of iP developers to shame... with two weeks of work. Impressive. Tech demo or not, it definitely bodes well for the devices future, especially if we can get a dual core ARM in there. Then that niggling AI won't be such a bugger on performance :)

Also, if he licensing this out as a general game engine; awesome. Idk what the unreal engine is doing at this point, but I'm sure it's in a similar vein in terms of performance.

wow...even though the human eye can see at around 30 fps, we still double tht...

Stop this debate, that has been proven wrong so many times... The eye may not be able to see it visually, but your brain can DEFINITELY tell the difference between 30, 60, 100, 150, etc. I play FPS games competitively and I can DEFINITELY tell the difference between 30 and 100, 60 and 120, 90 and 300. Don't bother saying otherwise.

I bet you're prone to stereotyping.

I think you're confusing megahertz with hertz. I think your frame rates are off, too. ;)

I don't stereotype. Clearly the person who made that statement has never played a video game with FPS greater than 100. You can distinctively tell the difference.

60 FPS is an incredible achievement for the iPhone, even for a tech demo.
