Who wants a turn table designed for its looks.? How well does it play vinyl records? THAT is what people care about.
The Linn LP-12 is widely accepted as one of the best record decks in the world. It’s a fifty year old design and nothing that Jony Ive has done will make any difference to the audio quality.

The look of a turntable can definitely matter if you consider this your hobby (as I do). A turntable is a pretty basic concept; you don't need a fancy one to get decent sound out of a record (and as long as it's using a decent cartridge/stylus that is properly aligned, you shouldn't be damaging your records). So beyond that point, the aesthetics of a turntable might be the deciding factor in choosing one high-end turntable over another.

I looked up LP-12s and most of them don't even cross pass $800.

This Ive designed turntable is a joke.
That's actually not true. Most LP-12 turntables (new) start at several thousand dollars and go upwards (non 50th anniversary) to 35-40k depending on the build. You can find older used decks for under 1K, but they typically need work and major upgrades. These aren't run of the mill decks that you pick up at your local stereo store, love it or hate it, there are many high-end audio enthusiasts who will pay this and more this type of gear. But, I don't disagree with you that this Ive designed deck is a bit over the top.

Philips GA312 circa 1970's . . . . . so old news design lol

Linn do make some phenominal audio equipment. My brother has had the same set of Linn speakers and Amp now for about 34 years. They're fantastic.
Yeah - sorry unless the $60,000 includes a full orchestra coming to your house to perform the music as you play the record on your turntable - it is NOT worth it!
Even at $600 there are better more functional designs out there.

Ive describes the LP12-50 as "a very gentle and modest project for us that was really motivated by our love and respect for Linn." Indeed, according to Fast Company, LoveFrom completed the work pro bono, and has no contract or other financial arrangement with the company.
Pro Bono hah, he likely got a free sample. Sure it didn't cost him anything and no contract. ;)

This is designed for people who think $1000 RCA cables actually make any difference in the sound quality.

Uh, no. Apple’s turntable would look like a Mac Mini with a single slot on the front to load your vinyl into. The interior would use lasers to read the record grooves. There would be no headphone jack and no audio output ports, using AirPlay 2 instead to connect to HomePods, or a Bluetooth connection to Airpods and AirPods Max.

Ugh, why is the most accurate thing I've ever read? 🤭

It would be $5000, audiophiles wouldn't want it, yet it would somehow be successful.

Former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive has revealed his latest project, a collaboration with British audio brand Linn to design a 50th anniversary edition of its Sondek LP12 turntable.
So if Jonny Ive designs a leaf blower in the future we could see an article yet if Apple had designed a leaf blower? Just look at those smoothed off aluminum edges, circular elements, and neutral, minimalist aesthetic design. 🤣

It would do a fraction of the things a Technic 1200 could and cost twice as much. Apple wildly overprices their products and everyone at MacRumors needs to admit it.

Specifically “LoveFrom has applied their design expertise to the new, precision-machined power/speed control button and hinges”
Thank you for that :). I read the articles but still could not see it till you pointed it out, much appreciated.

Consumers sure don't seem to have a problem with it, and everyone at MacRumors needs to admit it.

Linn products are a few miles from me outside Glasgow. The owners are good people. Cracking products too. $$$$$$

Sir Jony Ive has mellowed a little. Note the existence of a hinge. Ten years ago he'd have sealed the record inside and required a custom pentalobe screwdriver to change it.
