The back button alone on iOS is usually upper left in Apple apps and 3rd party apps. This requires use of the entire screen (if right handed).

When I used competing mobile OS's I didn't have to use the opposite corner from where my hand was as often. Dedicated back buttons and menu buttons at the bottom and such. Obviously this wasn't always the case and depended on the device.

You can have a 6" screen if you only use the bottom 3" of the screen a majority of the time.

I think it would be nice most apps were like Safari that use the bottom because of back at the bottom and gestures. But apps like messages, settings, FmF, etc all require full screen use plus the majority of my 3rd party apps.

OSX utilizes gestures better and screen size is irrelevant.

Reaching across 4" is a stretch. Much bigger without a modification of iOS would be tough. At the very least a lot of people would need to adjust the phone in their hand quite frequently.

It's been already said, but I just tried the apps and all of them support the "slide onto the screen from the left"-gesture. Reaching any sort of button at the top left was never a hassle, again this is the advantage of having such a small screen.

Apple used a 3.5 inch screen for five generations (OG, 3G, 3Gs, 4, and 4s) before they made a change. Don't be so quick to assume they will increase the size again after just two (5 and 5s) just because you think the market craves it.

But look at the competition during those generations. It wasn't until the 5 era that giant screens took off as common and popular. Back in 2011 the biggest screen was the Galaxy S2's 4.3 inch. Nowadays the HTC One's 4.7" screen is kinda small.

Jumping to 4.5"-4.7" won't change the user experience all that much especially with reducing the size of the bezels. You're looking at a handset that is about 1/8" wider and 5/16" taller. People use cases that bulk their phones up to those levels already.

at least in messages, settings, safari, etc. you can just use iOS 7's swipe to go back feature. instead of using the dedicated "back" button, just go to the left of the screen, start a swipe just off the screen (on the bezel), and swipe towards your right hand... this will help iOS out if a larger screened phone comes around

EDIT: I see this has already been mentioned before I finished reading all the comments. sorry to regurgitate info... carry on :)

what a great phone. my favorite of all the android devices I've owned or tested in the past. too bad Samsung ruined it with their ugly version of TouchWiz introduced with ICS

I'm upgrading to the 6 just cuz it'll most likely support tmo/AT&T new band 12/700A

I jumped ship back in december for a larger screen. I picked up a 32GB Moto X. While it is nice, I'm ready to give up the screen size and go back to iOS. Android is nice and fluid on the moto x but, iOS is just some much more polished IMO. Everything is integrated seamlessly, runs much smoother (based on my experience with a 3g, 4 and 5), and it just works better day to day for me. I really hope they release a larger phone, because I think the moto x form factor with the 4.7" screen is perfect for a phone. I don't want a 5"+ phablet though

I'd be shocked if they didn't release a larger model. I'm not sold on a phablet coming out but a larger screen certainly. I can see a big sales increase but I don't foresee a huge group leaving either if it's not released. I've tried Android and while I did like it, it just doesn't play well with my MBP. I'm engrained into the ecosystem and don't see that changing anytime soon. I'l be getting 6 in October when my renewal is due.

I recently sold my 5S and bought a Nexus 5. I do also have a nice Apple ecosystem, and I've managed to include the Nexus 5 into it almost completely.

The screen difference is amazing. Couldn't go back now...

So yes, if they don't release a bigger iPhone I believe a lot of people will move away. Now that I'm on the other side I can genuinely say that I ONLY miss the camera from my 5S, nothing else. Everything you can do with Android... Just an example: Being able to open the Dropbox app and upload whatever you want to wherever you want was like black magic the first time... lol

I don't think it'll happen, but I'm hoping that a ~5.5" screen gets added to the range. I very rarely make phone calls, and the times I do, it's using headphones with a mic. I also carry an iPad Mini with me, mainly for note taking, reading, etc. Something in between would be ideal, as I could leave the Mini at home ( it isn't particularly onerous to carry about, it's just I have a habit of putting it down and forgetting.... ).

If they don't, I'll just stick with my 4S until it dies, and put a homing beacon on my Mini....

Yep and consider almost every quarter they are selling more than they did before. I am sure they will release a slightly larger like they did going from 3.5 to 4.0 but I think you will see either a 4.5 or 4.7 not so sure about the 5.5 since it will be like holding an iPad Mini to your head.

I see people walking around with Samsung Note III's and it is just hard to watch someone use the Phablet up to their heads, could not image anything bigger but then the 6.0" and 6.5" phones hit the market after the Samsung Note II so anything is possible

defied logic is ALWAYS what I look for in a phone.

If they made the screen larger in the same footprint where would they put the mic, speaker for ear, home button?

So, your the only person in this entire world that has never seen the giant frankenstein bezels on all iPhones? Minus some obscure tribesman in Africa that doesn't have the internet.

Ummm yeah... the bezel is there so the speaker, home button, mic have a place to live. Take away those "frankenstein" bezels and where would these things go? They would have to totally change the button, mic, speakers most likely so like I said.... defied logic.

Don't worry, pappa apple would never leave all of you with tiny fem hands or no desire to own a larger, more reasonably sized phone out . You'll still be able to pick up the 4" for years to come I'd be willing to bet.

You know other phones have speakers without such large bezels, right? The only defied logic is yours. Look at your phone and you'll see the extra space.

Hmm? iPhone has the worst bezel screen ratio of most smartphones with similar size screens. Some slider phones are worse like the Droid series.

Are you saying other phones are defying logic/physics?

They lost me at the 5.

these comments are funny. I have a bunch of friends who love to hate on the iPhone yet watch the 1 hour long iPhone announcement every time just to bitch about it.

I have no clue what the samsung galaxy does because I can care less about it. Unless it gives me super powers or works like the Ax body spray commercials where hot women just jump me when I whip it out. Then Its not for me.

All the new iPhone needs is a better battery life and a better digital camera. The ones I take on my 5s are pretty awesome and I no longer use my digicam any more. People are going to buy iPhones because they are in the apple ecosystem. Telling them the galaxy, windows phone or the motorola phones aren't going to help.

I don't need my screen any bigger it needs to fit in my pants, the cool color change on the Motorola is neat but do you think you will use that more than once? I put a case on my phone any way.

If apple fails to release a larger screened iPhone this year will it be hard for them to keep people? I am torn on wether or not I would leave for a larger phone. I like the whole apple ecosystem and I cloud but it's sometimes hard to see stuff on the phone. Does Apple need to release a larger phone this year to stay competitive? Or do the still have an advantage over the other guys?

To start off, apple is the most valuable company in the world, I personally studied economics and so far, apple has taught the world new techniques that none have taken before. Apple has enough economists and thinkers to know what to do. People have been saying that iphone 5s or 5 won't be good enough, sure let them talk, look at the figures. Even if every single person on macrumors said that apple is dumb, thats barely a few dozen thousand people at most in comparison to their sales of over 100 million of the new flagship phone they released. Dont worry, apple will not be falling this year nor the next one. Apple will be releasing a larger phone (most probably) but if they don't, trust me, they'll make something more worthwhile than just a bigger screen. but also as I said they have enough studies to know what people want. Also, you said you're having difficulties reading some stuff, if you have lots of stuff to read then a tablet is made for that specifically, a smartphone is made to help you do simple stuff, it has the capability of lots however isn't noted to be used for all of them. Ive personally never had the problem of seeing stuff on the phone, and you could always increase the size in the settings->accesibility. Also, increasing screen size will not make seeing things better as app icons and etc... will not increase in size, you will just have more apps per screen and so on.

the iPhone 5c sold better than all the galaxies :)

People like to complain. It's a phone it doesn't give you super powers, it won't make you skinner/taller/smart, or give you bigger boobs/penis.

I think these are the things People are looking for Apple to magically do for them.

I went to the At&T store with my GF and they had a phone think it was the Lumia 1520. IT WAS ALMOST BIGGER THAN HER WHOLE HEAD !!!

Two common assumptions in this discussion:

1) A larger-screened model would replace the currently-sized model, rather than supplement

2) Personal desires are an accurate expression of public sentiment

Someone in this thread said that not only does the public want a larger screen, but the shareholders want it, too. That's a variant on assumption #2. There are plenty of Wall St. analysts saying it's necessary for Apple to bring out a larger model. If there was a shareholder resolution at the recent annual meeting that expressed shareholder desire for a larger device, I missed it. I don't recall seeing many, if any, comments of the sort from managers of funds that hold Apple stock, either. There's been way more discussion of stock buybacks, dividend increases, and new product introductions than of screen size.

Will Apple be toast if it doesn't bring out a larger-screened device this year? Not likely. Nothing they do or fail to do today, tomorrow, or the year after is irrevocable. This is not the company's last chance for survival.

Large corporations manage to survive long periods of mediocrity and/or mismanagement all the time (though Apple's hardly in that position). I can't believe either Sears or JC Penny are still in existence, yet they are. How many decades of decline did it take before GM went into bankruptcy? The Walt Disney Company survived an 18-year period of stagnation and decline between the death of Walt Disney and the hiring of Michael Eisner...

If Apple fails to release a larger-screened iPhone this year... life (and Apple) will go on.

No, I'm saying asking the iPhone as designed to have a larger screen with smaller bezels is defying logic. Apple most likely won't change their button design especially now that it's touch iD capable. In an ideal world phones would have no bezel and be controlled by our minds but alas we have yet to master that tech. IF there was a complete redesign of apples components, sure it could be done but honestly... what do you think the chances are of that happening?

See, people everyday just let like this article are doing what she's doing. I know because I see it everyday. Now I'm NOT saying doom and gloom for Apple if they don't make a bigger phone. Although, I will come back and buy one if they do. What I am saying though, is the many people do WANT a bigger screen for various reasons.

"Once I started using Swype (an Android keyboard that lets you type without lifting your finger between letters), I actually mastered using the Note one-handed and was texting twice as fast. I feel like I could write a novel on the Note 3, or at least a Business Insider article." http://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-using-the-samsung-galaxy-note-3-2014-3

Arent most Mac labtops 13 inches and HP and Dell 15/17 inch. People still drop 3-4x more for the Mac. The dells and Window based computers are even touch screens :)

You build a better product and people will buy the better product. I am not buying
a non apple product until Apple really messes up. Then giving me a better phone with the same screen size is ok with me.
