I don't think the Grolsch bottles here are like that, unless they changed recently.
Yeah you can get 'em but they're a little harder to find. The pint bottles have the flippy deal, the 12 oz. ones are generic pop tops :(

For ordinary things that Just Worked, Henry Dreyfuss owned everyone else.

hah, we have that same toaster..although I've never quite understood the price-tag associated with it?

my favourite item in our kitchen is the FA Porsche Kettle..

Designed well. Sturdy. Intelligent (does some quirky things). In fact most things designed by FA Porsche are designed incredibly well..and things like their lighters have a great out-of-box-experience, just like Macs.

i have that same kettle! well, back when it was made by Toastmaster (interesting in a thread about toasters...) and it's still going strong 7 years later. i did have to replace the connector thing that the kettle sits on though, a part i bought in the hardware store for but a few bucks!

as for the dualit toaster, well, i've wanted one ever since i worked in london and the local cafe cooked up the best toasted sandwiches in it. i would get the two slice + toased sandwich slot one though, if they're still available that is, best toasted cheese and pickle sandwiches!

iGav, love the +-0 stuff, that orange humidifier is beautiful!!!! i want one, just to plop in the middle of the floor, perfect colour!!!!

oh, and B+O stuff is gorgeous. not the best sounding though, in fact some of it sounds like crap, but i'd still buy it on the strength of looks alone if i was loaded.

oh, and great thread Blue...

Well, here's one place you can get one. $700+.

Myself, I always thought of this as pretty stylish... been wearing mine since 1999.

That one isn't the same...

It's called the Classic Museum, by the way. I like the looks of the one with the leather strap. Niiice! I see one very similar to it on that site, not the same name though, Movado Museum Women's Strap Watch, which is only $200.

(This is the one I really want: the Classic Museum. Drool...)

I know this sounds kind of weird, but the attic steps that I installed in my house and my grandmother's house seemed very apple-like in their design. The steps were designed so that one person can install them in about 30 minutes. That doesn't seem very impressive until you realize that they weigh about 75 pounds and can hold 300 lbs. They are made of steel and have gas struts like in some car trunks instead of springs, which can be fairly dangerous if they pop off. To put them up, you only have to give it a little push to get it started up and the gas struts take over from there. It also doesn't slam against the ceiling.

Bang & Olufsen.

The influence of this company on the landscape of product design is immeasurable. I really need say no more.

Here we have the classic 'Beomaster 2400' from 1977 and a pair of 'Beovox 2500' 'cubes' from 1967.

Beautiful.

I agree, i am sitting here lisning to my Air Tunes on some BeoLab 3 Speakers :D and the BeoCentre 9500 :D

Puma bike.

I really need to pop down to the Puma shop on Carnaby Street for a tommy gander at this example of design freshness. Second in design only to the Audi 'Cross'. ;)

The joys of eBay bud ;) you can pick up a Beomaster 2400 for no money. :D

However the Beovox 2500's are a little harder to come by. :(

If Apple made a toaster it'd have to be:

There have been designs like that for at least 15years. I don't know which that is but I think the one that was available in ~90 was called the Slingshot or Crossbow.

My aunt and uncle got something similar to these, Peugeot salt and pepper shakers.

Siemans makes Toasters and Kettles???????

I thought they just made cell phones.

Guess I shouldn't mention the Siemens vacuum cleaner we have at home :D

I even used to have a Siemens PC.

Holy thread ressurection Batman, etc.

But I came across something that deserves to be added. A corkscrew I bought from Muji a couple of weeks ago. It's based on an old French design, apparently.

The photos speak for themselves, but not only is it simple and beautiful, it's the easiest corkscrew I've ever used. It screws in, and then when the ring touches the bottle rim, it starts screwing the cork out, and then once it's half out it pulls out really easily. Awesome.

Nice! I need a new corkscrew - mine doesn't handle synthetic corks well and so many good wines come with them now. Will check it out next time I'm in Muji

The above bottle was a synthetic cork and it worked like a beaut. Oh, and it was £4.99, by the way. :)

Er... the last time my parents entertained guests they broke our corkscrew. Of course my frugal parents deem that they don't need to get a new one (even though they claim to be wine lovers). Ah well. What's 'Muji?' And Lau, you mean that corkscrew cost only 5 pounds? I'm jealous. (Sorry I dunno how to make a pound/Sterling symbol )

Muji is a Japanese chain. There are quite a few in the UK. They do a great line in casual clothing, stationery, storage items and some household gadgets. Reasonably priced and always something interesting. You can see some of their stuff here

I'm sure I saw one while in the US...but having just checked muji's website, it appears they're only in NYC in the US... so I must be imaginging things.

PS You get a £ sign by holding down Option 3 ;)

Ooh, Muji is only one of the more fabulous things ever....:D

It's a shop that originated in Japan and sells no brand, simple type stuff. It can be a bit of a mix of stuff, and some stuff is incredibly cheap, and some seems expensive for what it is, but it's basically very good. They have a website www.muji.co.uk, but it only sells a limited range. There is a Japanese website, but it I tend to get a bit lost on it. Their stationery is amazing, and I'm currently coveting a pair of slippers to buy on my next trip to London. I just really appreciate being able to get stuff that is beautifully and simply designed. I don't want to pay a designer price tag, but I equally don't want some garish cheapo stuff.

This is also a really interesting article about Muji, that appeared in The Guardian magazine. Sadly you miss out on the pictures on the web though. :( The Japanese shops look amazing though, you can buy anything by the looks of it.

edit: oops, the wine opened above is evidently taking a toll on my typing speed....:D
