Just thinking that if a defenseless woman gets robbed, the robber only has to grab her phone and force the woman to look at it to open a device that may very well have her entire life in it. Information involving her finances and her family could be taken away from her easily. Therefore, I believe facial recognition will start a new wave of crimes.

The rumor is that FaceID isn't just a one-time deal, but continually needs confirmation that the person using the device is you.

So, you will be able to unlock your phone, then open your banking app, and then hand it to someone to view. But, if someone mugs you, holds the phone up to your face, unlocks it, and then runs, your phone will not let them open any additional apps that are listed as possibly containing personal data.

So, he won't be able to get into your banking app, contacts, calendar, notes w/passwords, etc, because his face will not be authorized to open those apps. Therefore, the theory is, FaceID will be more secure than TouchID.

We'll have to see if this works in reality, but I'm pretty excited for it.

Wonder what happens when he forces you to open an app with your face....the robber may just stay there and make you transfer the money out of ya bank account instantly ....the new Zelle bank to bank transfers is so simple. If your face is the only road to authentication....that robber will keep you there until he has what he wants.

Honestly, if you're in a position where you've basically been kidnapped by a mugger and he's forcing you to do bank transfers, (1), they're probably going to kill you, (2), whether they do or don't, the transfers can be traced by law enforcement, (3), if the mugger is this devoted to getting your money, neither FaceID, TouchID, nor a password is going to protect you. That said, there's too much downside. Mug and just sell the phone for parts. Some feared TouchID would lead to fingers being lopped off and it didn't happen. I don't think we have anything to worry about FaceID, either.

OMG....the same thing was said about Touch ID. Sorry, but if you are mobbed then even Touch ID would be an easy thing for them. And we don't even know what is needed to unlock it. Apple has very reliable motion detection. Maybe the phone will detect when it's not you unlocking it. We. have. no. idea.
And that is why being afraid doesn't make sense at the time. After the 6.09.2017 we can worry if we are not happy with the security measures, before that it's just ridiculous.

In summary, it's the physical access V mental access. You have to coerce a felon to give you access to a phone via password whereas a cop can just grab your thumb to gain access. If you resist the cop in any way then you'd get done for resisting and the cop will probably pummel you into submission. I expect there will be a spike in people dying from police neck holds when Apple formally introduces facial recognition. Then again, maybe the facial authentication technology will be able to refuse you access if you appear to be distressed. I'd hate to be in QA when they test that type of functionality.

What is wrong with your police? Sorry, but here in Switzerland if anyone without a search warrant would force you to do anything the cop would be f*cked. Especially to physically force you, aka being violent.

And for clarification; physically forcing someone even with a search warrant is very difficult here.

This is just extreme paranoia.

It won't open up a Face ID crime spree....
