If nothing appears at MWSF then it will be bye bye Apple. ...
and with XP / Vista not as bad as some would have you believe and Leopard not all it was cracked up to be (where is the fix for Office?) means that my move to an Apple desktop could be shelved and I just get a new Windows box.

Good luck with that! You sound like you have yourself almost convinced. :D

I dodged a nice bullet when I bought my 2.6 SR MBP on black friday :)

Been playing with Logic 8 since xmas, and have been designing on this thing (CS3) for a couple of weeks, close lid plus 24 inch (or dual 24+17)= wouldnt know its a laptop :)

I really don't think i'll be feeling the need for a mac pro anytime soon, and although i'm sure that many people here do actually need one I doubt most actually will be doing anything other then Itunes and web browsing :D:D:D I dont even think an 8core would make much of a difference on CS3 at this point!

Happy waiting

Happy waiting

Indeed. If it doesn't happen, I hope there aren't tons of complaining threads on the 16th, because in the end, everyone who chose to wait made a decision to postpone a sure thing (ie, the Mac Pro that actually existed in the present) for an intangible (ie, the non-existent Mac Pro fueled by greed and speculation). Apple doesn't owe you guys a new Mac Pro. You don't owe Apple your money; the choice to wait for a new MP, and not to buy the existing one (or blindingly powerful PCs already on the market) was made by you. Own up to it!

While I do agree that the decision is that of the persons. I disagree that that decision is fueled by greed. It is fueled by the need to get value for one's money. If you equivocate the two, I am not sure what to tell you other than you have a warped view of reality.

Also, they have to update the thing eventually. While what people do here is speculate, that speculation is not without qualification. We know Intels roadmap and we know what Apple did when they released the Mac Pro. Proper and realistic conclusions about any future Mac Pro can be drawn when you look at those two things for evidence.

Apple doesn't not owe us a Mac Pro. They owe themselves a new Mac Pro if they indeed intend to stay competitive in this sector. And you are right, I don't owe Apple my money. But I assume Apple wants my money, which ties in with the previous point. If they expect to retain customers and win new customers they owe it to themselves to release an updated Mac Pro.

What it sounds like here is that you are a typical Apple apologist. The one who says "they don't need to update anything," however there exists a more intelligent being like those of the waiters in this very forum. The people who choose to vote with their money as opposed to settling down and taking that Apple up the.... I don't expect you to ever understand those people as you have clearly been brainwashed as to believe waiting for an update on a machine more than a year and a half old implies greed. A sad little life you must live.

I also find it odd, as you don't seem to be someone who makes illogical connections. To some degree I pinned you as pro-PC. If your aim is to say that the decision to wait is that of the decision maker, kudos, you have stated the obvious. However do not inject your farcical character judgements such as that of greed in doing so. As there is no logical connection. I guess I should have expected it from your reply in regards to women in the "OMG, she got me a Mac Pro" thread. Which was absolute drivel.

I also do not think those waiting have no right to complain. They have every right. Especially in regards to a machine which has seen nary an update since August 2006. If you want to suggest anyone as being greedy head over to the MBP forum, there are waiters whining for Penryn and expecting Penryn even though the MBP has seen at least 4 updates since the Mac Pro was released. There are better places for you to inject your fervor in regards to waiters.

I stopped reading your post right about here. If you pulled "Apple apologist" out of a heatmiser post, hahaha...have a good day, timestamp.

You should have read further. I address this very issue I had with the post. I didn't expect such crap from you. Good day!

Apple may be trying to thin current stock of Mac Pros as much as possible. If the new model is released, that is a lot of old Mac Pros that could potentially be under 2K on clearance bringing it in iMac price range.

Ok, I know everyone is sick of these when is it coming out threads but I have a question.

If on the 14th/15th of Jan the new mac pro isn't announced, what then?

How does the mac pro stand? Will it still be a good investment? I mean if they don't announce it then, it could be anytime, maybe not even till q3/4 2008 and I just can't/won't keep waiting.

I know there are lot of other people that have been holding out for macworld, just wondered on what you will do if nothing is announced? Will you continue to wait or just go for the mac pro as it is now?

Cheers

The reality distortion field will collapse, consuming the planet Earth and move out from there - sucking up the Sun and the remaining planets until it travels out further in our galaxy. Then, as it picks up momentum from the huge amounts of energy it has consumed thus far it moves onward to overtake the entire known universe, ripping apart space and time until nothing remains but a lone Mac Pro that Steve put his last remaining energy in from his reality distortion field to one day start a new universe where Penryn's roam free and updated video cards flourish...

Or option B, more complaining, moaning, groaning, and a possible riot on every known Mac forum until June when WWDC comes along and a possible update happens.

I'm putting my money on B.

P.S. Yes, it's just a joke....

P.S. Yes, it's just a joke....

You're correct. It IS a joke. It's a joke that the Mac Pro hasn't been updated in 512 days. FIVE HUNDRED AND TWELVE. Tanj in torment... Twelve years' wait for me and I'll still either be stuck with a seven-month-old machine or a released-two-days-ago machine with seven-month-old tech.

Unless Nehalem Mac Pros are released before August. Pipe dream if I've ever heard one...

(Great, now I have to edit this post every day until they update...:p)

there seems to be no evidence of low supply levels of Mac pros. I haven't seen any posts about it on any mac sites and there is no shipping delay for mac pros on the apple store website.

Back to this thread's original question.
I'm getting very nervous about the fact that among so many recent Mac World rumors there are exactly ZERO ones mentioning Mac Pro. That's not a good sign... If we don't see a Mac Pro update I don't know what i would do. It depends on what the next reasonable update date is. If it's summer, I'll buy the current model. If it's a month or two, I'll wait. What is the current thinking on the MP update time frame assuming it doesn't happen this month?

It hasn't been updated in a long time. I'm sure they will announce something about it at MW. If they don't I'm sure an update will come soon enough. :p

Well if they don't announce a new Mac Pro on the 15th I will have a long debate and either buy a PC or an iMac. I just can't justify buying a system, especially for as much as a Mac Pro is, that has components so far out of date. Honestly it kind of ticks me off how long they have put off updating the Mac Pro. So much time spent on all those 'other' products.

I'll be sitting there in the audience on the 15th hoping (praying) that the update happens. My old PC is on its' last legs and I can't wait to make the transition completely to Mac, but this out-of-date hardware issue really has me fuming. I'm editing audio and video (FCS2) and I want the horsepower NOW. I can do some of my work on my MBP 2.3 but I'm SO ready to get this old beige box out of here. If it doesn't happen on the 15th, then I'm going to look at the Refurb page at the Apple Store and buy an octo and be done with it. If Nehalem comes out at the end of '08, I might (MIGHT) try selling the refurb and moving up....maybe.

I just checked the refurb page, nothing MacPro there! Maybe that is a sign of a refresh?

Mark My Words...

If Apple doesn't introduce an updated Mac Pro at MWSF I am going Hack all the way. 512 days without an update is assonine on their part. Now that they are on the Intel platform they have NO EXCUSE for leaving the current platform languishing with nary an update for so long.

$400.00 for an OUTDATED and UNDERPOWERED (and not to mention problem-riddled) x1900xt is OBSCENE. Charging $323.00 for an extra 500 gig drive is HIGHWAY ROBBERY, charging the prices they do for FB-DIMMS as if they were brand new technology is RIDICULOUS.

Face it, Apple has shifted their focus from making great computers to investing time, money, and R & D into consumer gadgetry, DRM iTunes, and "supposed" movie 'rentals' for the future. And whoever brings up the pathetic excuse that "driver development for video cards is expensive" - well, what do you think the $15 billion they have in cash could be used for??

If there is no updated Mac Pro when MWSF rolls around, I'm going to throw in the towel and BUILD MY OWN.

Apple needs to get their priorities in order and get back to the business of building great computers, not gadgets and DRM-infected media. I think most people are aware of the fact that Apple's quality control is pretty much non-existent these days. And despite the fact they had six extra months to perfect Leopard they released it in little more than a beta status while managing to pat each other on the back and figure out ways to pay Steve more money and ponder the possibilities of $15 BILLION in cash.

No Mac Pro at MWSF - I urge ALL waiters to build a Hack and call it a day, as it will signal the end of Apple's commitment to its core customers in favor of the fast buck that comes with consumer gadgetry and edible garbage.:mad:

If nothing else let other companies make clones. If Apple isn't going to bother updating their workstation computers then let someone else do it. If nothing else at least keep updated with the BTO options. Apple waiting this long to update the Mac Pro is just insulting to the pro users out there.

Hell if they are so against changing what they have for BTO options, then at least give the option to order the computer without stuff. I would be much more agreeable to buying a computer without a graphics card than pissing away money on one that is sorely outdated. Just give me the base computer with no graphics card, no ram, no hard drive and I will buy them from somewhere else and install them myself.

If it doesn't happen people on the boards are going to bitch and moan and complain.

If it does happen people are going to bitch and moan and complain and ultimately decide to wait until the next revision. Because that's how it always goes.

I'm gonna have to go with Wild Bill on this one, I think he makes some valid points. This isn't like designing new PPC's w/IBM for their machines, they are just taking off the shelf processors from Intel and slapping them into their systems.

Now, I understand why Apple has created a lot of focus on iPods and what not, as it has made them quite famous and profitable, but they can't afford to give up on the professionals. They have been known as *THE* ultimate platform for video editing & image workstation, and to keep that reputation up they can't let themselves get so far behind current PC specs. Plus, charging top dollar for the RAM & hard drives and video cards is just trying to extort their customers, which is why I am waiting for a new system. I won't fall for their games, make me feel like I get my moneys worth and I will gladly purchase a new system.

It went A over T when the name changed

The moment Steve Jobs announced the change in name of the company. That is when started to go wrong.

I know during the PPC days updates weren't that amazing, but at least there were updates. The pricing was also reasonable. I always thought one of the main reasons was to keep Apple ahead of the game when it came to computers?

Build quality was something to brag about. Now it is a disgrace. I want to buy a Mac that will last me 5 or more years. I know in 4 or so it won't be able to handle the really complex stuff, but I would still like to have the confidence to be able to turn it on every morning and know it'll work. Since the switch to Intel i'm not sure that confidence is there.

As I recall, this was supposed to be the year of the Mac. Now Mark Morrison hasn't been heard of. The rain coats are still the same. So surely he was talking about the computers that Apple "care so much about", yet I can't see anything from Apple that has had a WOW factor.

As Wild Bill has said, Leopard was a half backed pile of ****. The less I say on my opinion about the iJoke sorry iPhone the better.

If Apple gets into to trouble again and things look bad, they won't be able to count on the design and print industry for help this time around. There used to be a time when switching to Windows was not an option for these guys, but now, totally different story. They'll have no qualms about leaving Apple in the cold just as Apple has done to them.
