they won't be able to count on the design and print industry for help this time around.

Too true. I work in the design/print industry and one of the studios I work with has just chucked ALL their G5 Macs, replaced them with Windoze machines

twin 21" monitors, pentium quad core, 2x 500Gb drives, 4Gb RAM, 3 years parts and labor- all for less than 1000 GBP per station ( that's about 1900 USD)

Don't know the full spec of the machines yet but I'm hoping to blag one of the old G5's ;-) - depends what happens in the next two weeks!

All the CTP RIP servers I deal with now are PC, Apple are losing ground FAST in the print industry - they don't even seem to try and compete anymore (all the reps are pushing PC's). It's only us die-hards that are trying to support Apple but it feels like an uphill struggle despite the headline grabbing consumer stuff.

Gotta say tho - when it's MY money that's going down, it's Apple all the way, but like the man said, Apple can't rely on their traditional pro user base any more.

I think that Apple has it's long term focus on other markets and will eventually split off the computer part of the company or stop making computers. There is more money to be made selling/renting digital content, iPhone, iPods, than the hassle they deal with on computers and their slim margins. I think the only reason they make computer now is appease the client base. To be really successful they need to create new products for the mass market place. They got a taste of that when they had great success with the iPod. Spending a lot of capital developing computers for specific segments such as the print or design industry is not a wise investment if they are going after the consumer entertainment industry. That's why I think they haven't updated the MacPro. They think what they have on the market is good enough and it costs too much in resources to compete with Dell or specialty stores like Boxx. Sure, they will update the MacPro sooner than later, but just because the average joe wants one doesn't mean Apple gives a crap. They just don't make enough money in that market to even care.

Great points here, a lot of people are getting upset that Apple is treating them badly like some kind of wicked stepfather, but as THX1139 points out, they're as company who'll follow the money (iphones and itunes) and not some ideals that we like to project on to them.

43% of Apple's revenue came from computer hardware in 2007. The computers aren't going anywhere.

And I don't think it is so much that they don't care, but more that people on here expected something that was never intended to happen.

there seems to be no evidence of low supply levels of Mac pros. I haven't seen any posts about it on any mac sites and there is no shipping delay for mac pros on the apple store website.

Back to this thread's original question.
I'm getting very nervous about the fact that among so many recent Mac World rumors there are exactly ZERO ones mentioning Mac Pro. That's not a good sign... If we don't see a Mac Pro update I don't know what i would do. It depends on what the next reasonable update date is. If it's summer, I'll buy the current model. If it's a month or two, I'll wait. What is the current thinking on the MP update time frame assuming it doesn't happen this month?

I did not say levels were low, I meant the exact opposite. Because there are still a good amount of them, the current stock of Mac Pros may become an issue if a new model is released on the 15th. Mac users are generally more informed about what is available in stores. Apple probably does not want people walking in and getting tempted from spotlight products to buy new mac pros or old mac pros that were reduced to clearance prices due to an update. A large stock of well powered machines mixed with slashed prices may skew their projected numbers for other models.

So they may wait past MW to update the line. That is if there are any plans to do so.

If stock levels are high it may be because many people are holding off, waiting for an update. In which case, it seems a risky strategy to delay updating the line for even longer. I expect a quiet update sometime this month.

I agree with that one. I believe the Fx 4500 is a discontinued card now but still in stock. Their age seems to be catching up with them in that area.
