No you have no idea what a good screen is.

Everybody knows iPhones have the best display consistency out of any smartphone, having some variation does not affect the fact that iPhones still have the superior display.
[doublepost=1511309960][/doublepost]
No it's not, it's people's ignorance of what good screen is.

Cool story bro, enjoy your phone.
[doublepost=1511310330][/doublepost]
Yeah but your “great” screen and mine might be totally different. As different as the screens.

If Apple warms up the screens, people cry yellow. If someone gets a cooler screen, it’s too blue. There is no way millions of people will ever agree on what a “great” screen looks like.

All I want is the exact screen Apple has on display. Shouldn't be too much to ask.

You see the problem here? Because of your own ignorance, nobody is benefiting from your nonsense.

Yellow color temp isn’t a flaw it’s a feature, that’s how it’s supposed to be.

I’m amazed you can see an uneven display with the brightness in Apple stores. How did you do it? Can you show me a photo of it?
Did you just say a yellow color temp is a feature?

What?

I have more than enough battle scars fighting for good screens, from iPhones to iPads and everything in between. It is almost a non winnable war, there is flaws to all screens. Just have to search for acceptable and not perfection.

@kre62 - why create another thread on this, lol, many people just refuse to believe this issue, you won’t convince them. Keep fighting the good fight though, I enjoy your commentary! Guys, he’s not saying 6500K / warm tint is a defect. He’s saying piss yellow tint is a defect, and it absolutely is a defect.

I know what proper 6500K white point should look like. I use a colorimeter to calibrate every display I own.

It’s almost as if a line of people doing returns is an extremely biased sample.

But I wonder, how did you bring your spectrometer to the Apple store?

Not sure if you're serious or not. No spectrometer was needed. It was obvious with the naked eye that all 4 displays looked different. The Apple Genius agreed.

So you are telling me they are under 6500k?

How did you know that? Did you bring your spectrometer as well? Or do you guys just have the super power of like, perfect temperature? It’s like perfect pitch but for seeing the exact white point with your naked eyes.

Store clerks don’t know ****, that’s why they are store clerks and not engineers.
Did you turn off True Tone? What was the divination between the models in JNDC? Was it around 2 or wasn’t it over 6?

No mass produced product can be perfectly consistent, so telling me that they aren’t isn’t telling me anything.
Either you have to show that the difference is larger than between say, Samsung Note 8 units. Or give some objective measurement to say exactly what the difference is. Other wise you are only stating the obvious that no two displays ever produced in the history of technology has been exactly the same.

The noticeably cooler screens are close to 6900-7000K. Same issues with MacBook Pros from 2016 I tried. Yes I used my colorimeter and measured out of the box settings with the units I tried. I can clearly tell when a screen is too cool, piss yellow, or tinted red. Many are not at all obvious under the bright store lights. I generally have a good idea of what fairly accurate white should look like with naked eyes, yes. Not a super power.

Wow. You sure don't want to hear what I have to say. I could really care less. I'm just stating the facts as I saw them.

All 4 phones had the exact same settings. TT off. Auto brightness off. I have no idea what you are talking about with JNDC. All I know is all 4 phones looked dramatically different. Pinks, blues, yellows...Not just a little different. A lot different. So much so, that the genius basically admitted it was embarrassing for an Apple product.

ah me and you have been at this since 2010. Good times in good threads lol.

My first X was terrible with an awful clicking sound.

My second X screen looks EXACTLY like the displays. I was shook and SHOCKED when comparing yesterday.

They exist dude. Good luck in the lottery though.

What clicking sound were you hearing?

What clicking sound were you hearing?

If you recall that link I posted for you yesterday to compare your clicking sound to the OP, that was the clicking sound Andrewr23 was experiencing. And you replied to me that your iPhone was nothing like what they were experiencing in that other thread I linked.

Don’t discount the lighting and viewing experience in the store.

What you are implying is that Apple either has a different manufacturing process for in store phones, or that they have a more stringent quality control threshold for in store phones.

The former seems highly unlikely and the latter seems expensive and laborious. To sift through millions of phones to find a few thousand for store display units seems ludicrous.

Also keep in mind that the vast majority of people can’t even see, or don’t care about, the screen color and brightness shifts that macrumors users regularly complain about.

When you’re in an Apple store you are seeing their products in a controlled environment. The lighting is prescribed. The distance you view the products at is prescribed. The content you see is predetermined...you won’t be seeing your iCloud photos for example.

I’ve actually tried to show a Genius Bar employee a screen discoloration on my iPad and not only could he not see it, neither could I. Only when I convinced him to let me show him in a darkened area of the store could we both see the issue.

We’d all love to have a tidy explanation and solution for screen issues. For years, people have tried to pinpoint the serial number range, the week of production, the specific factory. Some have even posited that one storage size or color vs another is a way to get a good screen.

It’s all a waste of effort and brainpower. It’s a lottery. Always has been. Probably always will be. And I’m pretty sure Apple is playing the lottery just like us.

I’m sure at some store, at some launch, some employee has swapped out a phone or iPad or two with a funky screen color, but the idea that they get a specially manufactured or vetted batch for display units defies reason. There are simply not enough bad screens, or people that scrutinize screens, to warrant either scenario.

Yep. That's exactly it. It's a lottery. I bought two AT&T version on launch day, both had really uneven viewing angles. Bottom half looked brighter, top half yellowish. Bought a Verizon Space Grey and it had a yellow tint to the display, but it was even throughout. I exchanged it because I wanted a Silver Verizon model and that one has the best screen by far. Normal whites, and even throughout.

Its definitely the display. 100%. I lined them up side by side. Apple agreed. Sorry, not the lighting.

I lined mine right up on day one as well. Pumped my brightness to max and safari looked identical. Mine actually scrolled better too.

I returned my X last week. Before handing it over I lined up 2 display X's, mine and the genius helping me. All 4 had different color screens, and none were anything worthy of a $1200 phone. The display models weren't any better than mine or the Apple genius phone.

Same here. When I go to the Apple store the display units color temp is all over the place. Do not see Apple picking these out a special. Happy with my X display.

I just don't get why someone would return their phone 3,4,5 times just to get this "perfect" screen. Nothing will ever be "perfect" to people like this.

Man, not sure i have the energy for it anymore. At this point if they release iMessage for Android, I'm out. At least those phones tend to have really beautiful screens.
Bahahahahahahahahahahncough gasp wheeze bahahahaha.

Sorry, that’s an approximation of my reaction to this part of your post.
I take it you are basing that statement off of seeing random friend’s Android displays not compared to anything else and/or models displayed at a store.

As someone who has had more Android phones than I care to list come and go through my house since 2016, mostly with Samsung displays but one LG made display...you have no idea how good Apple tries to make things for us. Really...QC sucks among the competition. I say that as someone who LOVES Android as an OS and the intriguing phones. Get an Android phone because you love variety and diversity and customization. Not because you’re sick of Apple QC. And please don’t get me started on some of the customer service snafus some people and myself have run into with the competition.

Apple absolutely could have the ability to pick out top-notch quality units that they use for demos, store displays, and so on. They may be able to check the specs of each display for certain values and pull out the ones that are at the top of the spec chart, for instance (their specs will allow a range before a display is rejected for production).

That said, I suspect that the store environment is a big factor as well and this is done on purpose. Along that line, why doesn't Apple impose similar lighting requirements for resellers or wireless phone companies (Verizon, ATT, etc) so that the same perception is maintained in their locations ? I'm only familiar with Verizon (corporate) stores and they're slightly dark to me. Nothing at all like an Apple store !

An operating system doesn’t make phone screens. LG and Samsung make phone screens. And guess who makes Apple’s phone screens. Maybe you should just go back to a land line.

There will always be complaints. And there should be for the prices of these phones. No one should have to accept what they consider a flawed display at these prices. When I purchased my 3000+ iMac, you can bet your ass I had them swap out my display when I found a dead pixel after a few months. Complete nonsense to tell someone what they have to accept because its an apple device. Many folks will defend apple at all costs. As if a complaint against apple is a personal insult to them. It's not 🙂

If only people would stop looking for problems that either don't exist or are extremely minor, we wouldn't need posts like this. Yes, £1000 or whatever is a lot of cash. So was £2000 for the OLED TV I bought. On those forums you got people sharing photos of occasional slight banding on all-grey screens in darkness which is noticeable in that single instance but not at all during any kind of normal use, or they spend all their time moaning at a little bit of image retention after they paused something for an extended period. Basically looking for something to moan about.

I don't know about you, but when I spend money on something I aim to enjoy it. I look for the things that bring me joy and pleasure when using the device, not the pedantic little things that should be nothing, but grow into massive problems just because you demand 100% perfection like a spoiled child.

As for the debate on what "good" means for a screen, on a forum that's a pointless one. It's down to preference. Objectively though the iPhone X has a very accurate display when it comes to colour reproduction. Whether you like that or not is your prerogative. Whoever said a yellow screen is a flaw though, is flawed in their understanding. I agree that there is such a thing as "too warm" or "too yellow", which is what I see with True Tone switched on. However, switch that off and the iPhone X is perfectly warm in terms of colour. It's not a flaw, it's the colour temperature of our sun when you look outside. Do people moan at nature too, "Hey, you're far too yellow out there"! lol
