There are the white box units too, so perhaps they rummage through those but doubt it, and/or they are picked out before even packaged at the factory labeled “store units only”

I wonder if deciding which screens are good or not is subjective?

I would guess 10 people could look at the same random phone and some would say it looks great and others would not.

It seems you might be more sensitive to screen variations than other people. I agree with each new phone model there are flaws and bad units. Maybe our tolerance levels or color depths vary.

For me it seems every time I buy a new phone I end up having a problem and need to swap it out. I have bought 2 6 pluses, one 7 plus, and one 8 plus. Every one had to be returned for another. I joked last month when I bought my 8 plus that maybe they should just give me one of those plain box phones they use as replacements right from the get go.

Two weeks later I had to exchange the phone. The new one does not have the problem the old one did, but my replacement crackles during calls using hands free in my car.

Same here. When I go to the Apple store the display units color temp is all over the place. Do not see Apple picking these out a special. Happy with my X display.

Same experience here. Saw some that had red tint, others had really bad blue shift, others shifted pink, one was a bit green tinted, and some were perfect.

Whoever said Android is better (maybe it is the OP), that’s not true at all. I have hands on experience with 3 different LG V30s and that is the worst screen I’ve ever seen. You can’t go below 30% brightness without seeing grainy and blotchy whites, mura effect, some banding. Also had very uneven brightness. Those are defects. Pixel 2- horrible multi color shift at slight angle, the one I had. Pixel 2 XL- uneven screen tint on every display unit I see. I could go on. It is all a lottery, with every company. Apple isn’t perfect but at least they try to work with us until we are satisfied. All things considered, the X screen is truly fantastic.

Nothing to wonder, it's just fact. Even an objectively accurate screen may not be good for some people depending on how they perceive certain colours and light.

As for having to constantly swap out phones, I guess it depends on your luck, but when it comes to colour, the best thing to do is just use the damn thing! Side-by-side you will generally prefer one thing over another. So, don't walk around with both phones in your hand! Just use the new one and get used to it. Eventually the display will look as normal as ever. I've got roughly 10 displays in my house across various devices. Only one of them is properly calibrated. None of the others look the same side-by-side, and none of them are any worse off for it because they are largely used in isolation.

Like I said, if you want there to be a problem with something, there will be. Use it and be happy, or pick fault and be unhappy. Life's choice.

That’s my philosophy as well. You bring up another point. Calibration. Are phone screens calibrated at the factory or at all before being sold?

I think I’m in alignment with the gods, and mostly ignore the chaos around me. I just write it off as part of doing business. Part of the reason I stay with Apple products. They make it so easy just to walk in and replace a defective item. I realize that an item like a phone that is produced in the millions will have some anomalies and I accept that. Generally i overlook the small things. If a product had a small scratch or speck on it out of the box it would not bother me. Others, get out the microscope, take pictures, complain on forums like this, and exchange the item several times until they get one that is “perfect”. I don’t have the time or energy to be so critical.

Now if I had a product that was defective and needed to be shipped back to the manufacturer, and the process took two weeks or more, then I would have a problem.

An operating system doesn’t make phone screens. LG and Samsung make phone screens. And guess who makes Apple’s phone screens. Maybe you should just go back to a land line.

Thanks for stating the obvious. What android does have is the ability to adjust white point. But ill think about that land line suggestion.
