I actually think that the majority of you "Linux" voting people would actually be using Windows if there was no OS X.

Actually, I'd be dabbling in it, since I've been attempting to use it for years, it's just never been user friendly and compatible enough for my tastes. Although it has gotten a lot better recently.

Some form of Linux. Or maybe Solaris.

True I have dabbled with Solaris from time to time but feel that some of the Linux distros I tried were more in line with my use patterns/thinking

That's not a stab. But complete practicality.

What practicality is this?

If it suddenly went away now - I'd dual boot Linux and Windows, probably Ubuntu & XP. Ubuntu most of the time, XP for essentials.

However, if OS X had never existed I'd be on windows. OS X drew me away and also interested me in other things like Linux

"essentials" have alternatives which exist on other platforms. It might not always be the exact same program. The inverse is also true.

At my work they have a restrictive mail quota so archiving email often is necessary (else Outlook will choke on big mailboxes). Archiving to a local HD is a bit risky and locally archived mail is only accessible from one machine.

IT offered a solution whereby you need to install a Windows program that merely gets your mail from Exchange and archives it to another server, rather than putting more space directly on the Exchange server. This solution has no real technological advantage. I started archiving old mail to gmail, which worked out great. I can get my archived mail from anywhere with excellent search functionality and a much better interface than Exchange webmail when on the go.

Well, I was using FreeBSD as my main OS until I bought the Mac Mini when it first came out (back in the long gone days when the Mini was cheap and reasonably up-to-date), so I probably still would have FreeBSD on my desktop if OS X didn't exist.

...and Vista or XP on a laptop.

Solaris can use GNOME, so it looks and works like many Linux distros, such as Ubuntu.

i agree i would go to linux (ubuntu) for my primary desktop but still have a window machine for gaming or would dual boot.

is linux user unfriendly? like it'd be hard for a mom/dad/non-computer person to use?

if there was no os x i'd probably be on xp, but thankfully we don't have to do that. :)

It depends. If they use commercial software (stuff you buy in stores), then it wouldn't be pretty. If all they do is check mail and browse the web and chat online, Ubuntu or Suse or Fedora would do well. Linux Mint is a modified version of Ubuntu, and it's probably the easiest one of all.

As long as you don't have an x-fi sound card and wireless card for internet (although the latter has gotten much better in terms of support), most of your hardware should be supported. Try the live versions to see what's supported and what isn't before making any final decisions.

Considering that I was using Linux for 2 years before getting a G5, I'd say you are quite wrong. And considering how similar OS X is to Linux (UI stuff aside), I'd say you are even more wrong.

I would probably be stuck with Windows XP, as I wouldn't go near Vista until I absolutely had to, and am not familiar at all with Linux.

If there was no OS X none of these other OS'es would exist in the forms in which you know them. So it's impossible to say what I'd be using.
