Really interested to see what yours brings. I'm planning to do the same thing and get the 5th Gen.
I have the 3rd gen White 32gb wifi model with the gray Smart Case (not cover)
Problem is mine was in a cheap case before and fell right out of it onto the tile. No damage to glass and can't see w/cover on but How much do you think this mark will detract in value?
Quite a bit, anywhere from $100 off down to half its value.
There are enough in near perfect condition that people don't tend do go for ones with defects.
Good to know I'm selling mine with a case as well. I'm pretty confident I'd get at least $380 saw a bunch go for around there and mine actually is in better condition than most. Thanks!OP, I had the same exact iPad as you (3rd gen, black, wifi) and I sold it a couple weeks ago on ebay. Someone took my "buy it now" offer for $400. I did include the used Speck fitfolio case though. Also sold mine preparing for the 5th generation! Good luck!
While I agree that at this point keeping older units until they're dead is a good option, saying the value has bottomed out is not so accurate. $200+ can still be gained in exchange for the iPad 2. $200 towards a new iPad is significant, no matter how you look at it. Just my .02my iPad 2 has probably bottomed out in value and it's window for sale passed a while ago. Now, you're better off just keeping the older units and enjoying them until they literally die.
I want to sell on eBay but I'm afraid the buyer will demand a return when news of the iPad 5 break out.
The thing is a they can fuss and complain about anything to try and return and Paypal really goes out of their way to protect sellers nowadays. I never had a problem and have a good reputation but still do get a little worried when selling a big item. I still would rather go this route than deal with Craigslist and potential thieves.I just threw mine up on eBay. I think the Buy It Now price is a deal given my seller rating, the condition, accessories, and free shipping.
From my experience, the value doesn't tank until the new models are announced. In this case though, the mid-cycle refresh is really hurting the resale value of 3rd Gen units. But, there's not much we can do about it other than get for it what we can.

That's when you kindly remind them that it isn't your problem that they didn't research before buying.

I ended up getting a whopping $428 for my iPad 3rd Gen 32GB wifi. I was kind of surprised but then again it was sold as MINT condition. I had it in a full body shield and inside of a case the entire time, it honestly looked almost as good as new.
I sold a couple other things on eBay and now am just waiting on that 5 baby.![]()

A 16GB iPad 4 with LTE goes for $530. You're trying to sell a used iPad 3 with LTE for $400? Your expectations are far too high. Accessories don't count for much on eBay except they draw more people to your item. Meaning it will make a person say "both of these listings are the same but this includes accessories so I will bid on this one." But it won't make them pay more money to get the accessories.
Edit - Wow I guess I have to take what I said back. Completed listings show many that are similar to yours having been sold for $400.

I have sold mine and its been "delivered" to the seller for about almost a week should be good by now. No feedback yet but if they try and pull anything can say why did they wait this long.
No it doesn't a sig just covers you if the buyer says he didn't get the item. Insurance is more of covering you if the items lost by the post office. Don't even bother trying to make a claim saying they damaged your item during shipment they'll say you didn't package it properly. The buyers can bring ANY bogus claim they want to Paypal and off top already have the upper hand in a dispute as a buyer.Just to be clear, the Buy It Now price is $400. If no one bites at that price, the auction may very well end significantly below that number.
As you have pointed out, similar packages (iPad + cases + accessories) are going for roughly $375-$400 right now. By the time you throw shipping cost in on most of those, you're easily at $400 for the total cost.
I always try to do a decent amount of research to manage my own expectations and set prices appropriately. I agree that the market dictates what an acceptable price is, not my personal opinion of my beloved devices. Admittedly, this has become more difficult this time due to the mid-cycle refresh. Usually you can just look at the refurb store on apple.com and drop your price $50 below that. Not so with iPad 3 presently.
I disagree with you slightly that accessories don't matter. Sure, you're not likely to get as large of a return on those than you will with the actual iPad, but I think if you have the right mix of accessories that creates an experience or value proposition that it can propel your sale to a much higher end. Original packaging and documentation, for example, appears to drastically increase the value of used electronic goods.

As others have pointed out, requiring a signature and insuring for the full amount resolves the issues around bogus claims.
Agree that eBay > Craigslist in many ways.
Just sold my 3rd gen wifi 32gb with small dent (see photo in prev post) for $400 cash on craigslist!
just sold 16GB iPad3 on CL for $350 with poetic slim case
I have *knocks on wood* had pretty good luck on eBay in all my years dealing with them 15+ years. I know the fees have been on an uphill not happy about that. Craigslist though while the money return would be better just don't like the thought of dealing with someone who might try to rob me even in a well known place "...let me have a look at it, then book it out the door".
Anyway sheesh didnt think it was that quick of a turnaround, i'd be stoked with a mid next month release. I think I'm going to put it up tonight.![]()
