I have been pondering this since March. The EVO has soo many features and it looks like the new Iphone will somewhat match those features...Well somewhat. If the new Iphone screen is in fact smaller OR even the same size will any of you be switching to the EVO?

For me what makes the decision harder is the following:

Sprint is cheaper
Sprint gives more minutes
Sprint TV included
Wifi hotspot
Potential 4G
Night and Weekend minutes start at 7 pm

Right now I pay 160 for my wife and me and we feel like slaves to the minutes. We get 550 to share. It just isn't enough. I don't want to upgrade my minutes with ATT as I feel 160 is way too much to be spending in the first place. I don't want to leave my iphone behind. I DO love the apps...But I am wondering if I can overlook all of the benefits switching to Sprint's EVO offers.

What say you?

You're leaving out the most important parts: software and user experience. Never mind the hardware "features" that anyone can just throw on. Without great software and a first-clsss user experience, it's all worthless.

Android is still way behind Apple in the software department. Not even mentioning apps.

If the new iPhone does not meet or beat the EVO

Especially tethering

Then yes I will be jumping ship

A lot of people are just saying "im jumping ship" based on hardware specs. There are so many people who did the same and if you go to the Nexus One thread, you'll see a bunch of them realized how much better the iPhone is. The iPhone imo is the best phone out there because the hardware and software is married together so well.

Sure Apple leaves out some things, but when it's done right, its perfect. Apparently with Android phones, you can't copy and paste across applications. THAT SUCKS! Microsoft is getting it with Windows Phone 7. They are realizing that "specs" only go far. What it's really about is the software.

Apple thinks the same way and thats part of the reason why they've sold over 50 million units. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this next iphone sells a million in a weekend. If they do iChat right (which I assume they will) it will change cell phone communication (once again).

+1 THANK YOU!!!!

Exactly.

-1. It runs android. Wait till you see iChat. Hold the phone and use it. I've used an nexus one and I have to honestly say if feels like a cob-job os. These companies can't beat Apples software, so they just try to out spec them. Not to mention their support is terrible. You should see the complaints in the google forums, that still have no fixes.

Also, android is so fragmented. google will make a new device with a new os and you'll be out of luck, just like g1 owners.

To each their own. Enjoy your evo

Well said. There was an article done about Android and it's fragmentation issues. There are so many different versions across so many different hardware versions it's not funny. Some say it will clear up after Google ages a bit (still new to the phone market). Some say it will only get worse.

The one thing I really like about my iPhone is the fact that I know the company that makes it, stands behind it. I can go to the store and get a problem resolved ASAP. I also know it will be supported for a couple of years and will also hold it's value. However Apple has a few things to prove in the next revision otherwise I will just hang on to my 3GS. Namely the fact that the screen resolution needs to come up. It's suggested that it has in the "leaked" model but nothing is certain until the announcement is made.

Perhaps the OP would be interested in Microsoft's "Turtle" in regards to wasted space. ;)

Check out CNET review of the incredible, which is less than the Evo. Watch the video and the editor rating. The phone is gonna be a beast. I was wanting and expecting more from the new iPhone. The leak makes the Evo a much easier decision.

Why do you need a bigger screen?

There's no sense in talking to these guys who are attracted mostly to hardware specs.

They aren't looking at the whole user experience imo.

It's like they'd rather have a Honda Civic with 400HP (EVO, Incredible), instead of a BMW with 350HP(iPhone).

Some people are like that I guess. To each his own.

Why do you need a bigger screen?

I have a mount in my car for the iphone or any phone. I have a 2 1/2 year old that loves to watch movies and such while I drive. We have an fm transmitter so the sound comes right over the speakers.... And yeah, I watch youtube sometimes when I drive. Watch out people, I will hit you. :D

I would love to have a little bit larger of a screen. I think 4 inches is perfect and could probably be done with the current Iphone if they got creative with the space. Honestly 4.3 on the EVO is a little too big but I would rather have a little too big than a little too small. That's what she said!

HTC sense is very nice. I have read every page of the Nexus One thread. I have watched people sell their Iphone and then buy them back. I for one would never switch to the nexus one. However I have played with the windows mobile dressed up HTC Sense UI HD2 and it was pretty. I will never use a mindows mobile phone, but HTC does an amazing job.

At the end of the day I have to decide if I want to get the new Iphone and pay a premium per month for less minutes through ATT.

Personally, I don't think that the screen itself on the device is necessarily any smaller. The current 3GS has a slim, black border BETWEEN the screen edge and the bezel itself. I wonder if they just removed this border, leaving the actual screen size identical but the perceived size (especially when powered off) slightly smaller.

I hope they remove that border. The 2G iPhone screen popped out at you more because the bezel curved closer to the edge of the actual LCD. I hate the border on the iPhone.

Btw, I'm on a contract on the 3GS on Fido. If I sold the phone, bought a 4G somehow, since the 4G doesn't accept regular SIM cards, would I be able to ask Fido to provide me with a smaller SIM?

When I bought my chainsaw, I bought a Stihl. When I bought my trimmer, I bought a Stihl. I understand and appreciate much a Brand and it's ability to stand behind it's products. I buy Stihl because they last for decades. The chainsaw may last longer than I will.

Phones are not products that need to last long. I don't want a phone that will last much longer than 1 year. It is nice to have a decent resale value, but I don't care that much if I lose a little bit. I do think since 4G is a new tech, the EVO 4G will still be wanted next year when 4G spreads. Apple does have nice support depending on who you deal with. If you suffered from the yellow screens of the 3G 3GS or Ipad, you probably know they do not always stand behind their product. Why after a couple years of the yellow tint issue would the Ipad still suffer. Should I risk it again? Anyway, technology is disposable.

You should not hang on to your 3GS. It will soon be out dated and if you wait another year it's resale value will be considerably lower. It is no longer worth it anymore to wait 2 years to upgrade a phone.

The phone may be too big, but they do use the space on the front of the phone. Why can't Apple?

No one here has mentioned the iPad

The game has completely changed

I will have the best of both worlds

If the new iPhone does not allow me to tether the iPad at 4G speed

Then EVO all the way

Yeah baby :D

Love the analogy. It's like sport vs luxury. I prefer luxury over sport any day. How fast are you REALLY going to be going daily anyways? Better to enjoy the ride for the duration :D

By the end of the year, the EVO and the Incredible will be nothing more than a memory. Anyone remember the abomination call the Storm? Storm 2? What about the Palm Pre? Oh, no worries - Palm is going under. Lol.

The only real competitor is Android and Google has a ways to go. Apple does it up right. They maintain a great user experience and keep the hardware fresh (for the most part). Everyone else could care less about the software. They care more about specs and making it go FASTER! Which is useless if you don't have a simple, smooth and intuitive interface. Why bother?

The reason most phones don't use touch buttons like that - they accidentally get pressed. Watch, it will be a chief complaint.

iPhone 4G for me as long as the screen resolution is better. I will be keeping my 3GS as well for development.

Yeah...If only 4.0 wasn't taking till fall to come to the Ipad. On that note, I am still waiting to see what the HP Slate is offering. I have a HP Touchsmart 600 with Blu Ray drive etc, it's a nice machine and the touch is very smooth. I have to wait and see. If I can go Apple, I will. If another company gives me what I want, I go for that. It's Capitalism at it's finest. You only have to wait a year with whatever you buy before you buy something new anyway in most cases. Maybe 2/3 years with a computer but that's it. Technology moves so fast, if you don't upgrade and sell what you have when you can, you end up with stale old tech that's worthless to sell.

The EVO hotspot is freaking awesome! If I can get good signal in my house, bye bye ISP.

Well, yes and no. We remember them and remember their faults. Most people that enjoyed them, did so, and are now off to newer toys. No one will ever know that they used them. It's not like you go to the grave with a list of devices you have owned in your life. That would be scary. Anyway, Apple's Iphone does have great name recognition, but that means nothing if they do not keep it going. I am sure you could throw Apple II on that list of yours. A device that was awesome for it's time...Slip slip slip Apple went. Apple is not very good at keeping up with competition. They specialize and sometimes over specialize. Maybe the Iphone falls prey and maybe not.

You should check out HTC's HD2 at T-Mobile. Your first impression will be astonishment. I say that because it's beautiful and it's on a windows mobile OS. I had very low expectations for it and those were blown out of the water. The downside? You have to wait on HTC Sense version of Android to come out to update. I don't know what that waiting time is tbh, but wouldn't expect it to be long.

You may be right about that from a gaming perspective but I don't see most of those buttons being an issue.

That's why I won't own an Apple computer. They don't even have blu-ray drives. Something PC's have had for years. Why won't Apple include it? It would cut into their iTunes profit. Sad they think like that and stifle their own advancement in the PC world, but that's how it is.

Now, the iPhone is a different story. Apple HAS to keep up. They know that. It's a win win for them. If they don't keep up, people will be upset and they will lose market share fast! Now, when Apple keeps up, not only do they make more money by refreshing the product, they keep people happy by giving hardware updates. This works because in the mobile phone market, refreshes are every 12-18 months. Apple is right on target doing it every year at the same time. They know what they are doing.

As for Winmo - it could **** gold bricks for all I care. It's a POS mobile OS and they can keep it. I will NEVER go back to Winmo. It had it's time and MS blew it by milking it and not updating it (everyone else take note on that) and they fell way behind. Now they are playing catch up. No thanks.

The cool thing about AT&T - they have the iPhone. Plus, they get Android and Winmo for those that want it. I don't have to leave my carrier to get Android. Android will come to me just as powerful as it is on Verizon or anywhere else - just re-badged. Never had a problem with AT&T.

Yes, Apple is one of the most short sighted companies. Steve Jobs is a amazing creative guy that is great at inventing things, but he has a short attention span. He also lives in his own world. He doesn't need blu ray in his computer, why would you? The very reason I passed on the Imac, which was a shame as I was looking for an excuse to get it.

I think the way WE see the market now and the way Apple sees the market is quite different. You know how game consoles sell their hardware at a loss because they make money on the game titles? I think we are looking at a very very similar set up with Apple. Yeah, they do make money on the hardware, but they make a ton of money off their app store. Wii was the first console to introduce motion into everyday gaming, but you see that Sony is copying them right? It's a matter of time before the revolutionary motion technology is an everyday technology in every gaming console. Will the next Nintendo system beat Sony and Microsoft with graphics etc? I doubt it.

The Iphone is in similar shape. It was the first out. It was the first device to show us that we want a phone that can do more than make phone calls. But now the other players have come to play. Steve is riding the App store and doing the bare minimum to maintain the hardware to use the apps. It's a matter of time before Androids market takes off. It's capitalism at it's finest. Devs want to make money and more and more Android devices are out there now. The big companies are going to start making apps for both sets of devices. It's the nature of the beast.

It's not the windows mobile experience I was referring to. I am referring to the fact that the HD2 is almost the same as the EVO in hardware and despite the crappy winmo, the UI is smooth. It's due to HTC's sense UI that is all over the phone. You have to experience it to understand it. They have done a great job and I believe they can do an even better job with Android OS. There is less crappiness to hide in Android's OS.
The cool thing about AT&T - they have the iPhone. Plus, they get Android and Winmo for those that want it. I don't have to leave my carrier to get Android. Android will come to me just as powerful as it is on Verizon or anywhere else - just re-badged. Never had a problem with AT&T.

Yes, but the cool thing is not cool at ATT's pricing. Their plans are horrible compared to Sprint. They also for some reason crippled the experience with Android via the Backflip. ATT has good customer service and decent service. They are much better than Verizon. With that said, they need to get more competitive with their rates. They charge about the same as Verizon but actually offer less minutes. The only bonus is roll over minutes. It's been my saving grace.

The reason Sprint and T-Mobile are cheaper is because - their service sucks. They can't very well charge a premium when they don't have the network to back it. I am sure if they were just as big as Verizon and AT&T - pricing would be competitive all around.

AT&T is fine. Their pricing is not bad at all. Verizon needs to do everything it can to prevent defectors going to the iPhone. They are trying very hard - will the succeed? Who knows.

Hardware does nothing for me if I can't interact with it. I will NEVER have a Winmo phone. Ever. Hardware again - isn't everything. ;)

Also, android is so fragmented. google will make a new device with a new os and you'll be out of luck, just like g1 owners.

To each their own. Enjoy your evo

Right... And Apple totally isn't doing that with the OS4 and their older generation phones. Come on man, don't be so naive. Companies will always give their newest products the best support, and then those products get old and die.

Well said. There was an article done about Android and it's fragmentation issues. There are so many different versions across so many different hardware versions it's not funny.

There are already the equivalent of three (four, soon) different official versions of iPhone OS on phones and iPods... and two of those don't even support multitasking APIs.

The oldest iPhones didn't have GPS or magnetometer. CPU and RAM have been upgraded. And now video resolution is about to change.

All phones eventually fragment in both hardware and software. The iPhone is no different.

Screen size isn't everything and IMO if that's all a phone has to offer then it's a POS. Only Spec Hoe's care about things like screen size in place of other things

The only thing? What about 720p HD video recording? Playing HD content on your TV? FM Radio? And of course the biggy: Providing a 4G hotspot for up to 8 devices including your iPad or older iPhone/Touch?

A few things here. I am interested in seeing how iChat works and seeing what kind of solution HTC/Sprint is coming up with for the EVO. But I can’t help but wonder – even if iChat is the s**t, how in the world is AT&T’s overloaded 3G going to be able to handle it? I can’t help but think anything Apple can come up with video-conferencing-wise will be crippled on AT&T’s network.

Sceondly, regarding the OS, a few people on this thread have criticized the EVOs operating system based on the Nexus One. But EVO is going to be running the HTC Sense UI overlay of Android 2.1 which the Nexus One doesn’t have. From the Engadget review of the Incredible which can be found here:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/droid-incredible-review

“Firstly, we need to talk about the differences between Android 2.1 with and without the Sense UI. If you've looked at a Nexus One (or own one), then you probably know that the experience with the UI is a mixed bag. Some portions of the software have been dramatically cleaned up, while others seem to be left on the cutting room floor. That's absolutely not the case with 2.1 and Sense. Basically, the Incredible -- and all devices with that combo -- feel like complete, polished, modern smartphones, with none of the perks or features missing. In particular, the homescreens have been massively expanded here, giving you seven screens in which to store icons and widgets... and there are a lot of widgets. HTC has included a handful of its own widgets alongside some of the familiar stock ones which Google offers. Of course, the widgets (and their corresponding apps) which HTC offers generally offer far more functionality than Google's options, and they're also tied together with Sense in way that makes the experience of using them within the OS feel complete -- something notably missing from the Google-only experience. To say that this UI is competitive with something like iPhone OS 3.1 (or 4 for that matter), or Palm's webOS is an understatement; in many ways it's superior to what Apple and Palm are offering.

Thirdly, regarding the problem with Android fragmentation, sounds like that problem is about to be solved:

Google's solution to Android fragmentation coming in 'Froyo'
http://www.neowin.net/news/google039s-solution-to-android-fragmentation-coming-in-039froyo039

There's no sense in talking to these guys who are attracted mostly to hardware specs.

They aren't looking at the whole user experience imo.

It's like they'd rather have a Honda Civic with 400HP (EVO, Incredible), instead of a BMW with 350HP(iPhone).

See above Engadget review about the user experience. Sounds like there's a very good chance that the EVO experience will be on the same level as, perhaps even “superior” (Engadget’s word, not mine) to the iPhone’s. Can't wait to try it and find out for myself.

Right... And Apple totally isn't doing that with the OS4 and their older generation phones. Come on man, don't be so naive. Companies will always give their newest products the best support, and then those products get old and die.

Except the G1 is 1 year old, and the first gen iPhone is about 3

There is a reason why the iPhone wins highest customer satisfaction and has the highest retention rate of any other smartphone company out there. It goes a lot DEEPER than the phone itself. It's the user experience/user interface. The reality is Android is geared mostly to MALE TECHIES, Ages 25-35. The iPhone appeals from 7 year olds to 90 year olds, both men and women. HUGE difference. Not only that, the support behind Apple is by far the best. Questions answered for free, tech issues that can be solved most of the time (fast). You just don't get that anywhere else.

God forbid you get an break or have issues with your Incredible or EVO 4G...It's a total nightmare. It's like getting a PC fixed, which in most cases is huge headache. If I break my iPhone right now...I can walk 2 blocks and pay $199 for a replacement and have it synced in going within 30 minutes.

Again, it goes SO much deeper than the phone itself, which imo, is still overall best in hardware/software marriage.

There is a big reason why a lot of those guys at Engadget still use iPhones on a daily basis...even though they have Nexus Ones and Incredible...

At the end of the day, I want the best overall product, and honestly, after using a N1 for a while. I, like many others, realized the iPhone is just a better phone (for now).
